Seems like we're going to have a very nice development war or sorts. McLaren brought 11 upgrades for Miami so we'll see what what RB is going bring to Imola along with Ferrari. Was excited for the first major upgrade for Mercedes at Imola, but seeing how quick McLaren, Red Bull and Ferrari were in Miami, I don't think the W15 is going to do much in terms of decreasing the lack of pace.

Congratulations to Lando. A little bit of luck, but I think he had the pace without it. Max agreed in his post race. You can tell he was honestly happy for Lando. It was nice to see.

I was surprised Chuck didn’t have anything for Max after the Safety Car.

Some good racing at times. Is this an Inflection point? Has the wind changed? What will the RB20 Imola Upgrade bring? Was it simply luck?

On to Imola………
I mean it was amazing, but I agree there was also luck involved, and the RB car just wasnt fully there. Max said so himself even in qualifying yesterday. But nothng down on Lando, he was at the right time in the right place and took the opportunity. Superb job.

I agree, although there was improvement, the others improved more. It was nice to see Lewis get some of his fighting spirit back instead of just whinging and telling what everyone else is doing wrong...

I think George was very on fact in an interview on Friday. He said "Last year we went completely one direction. This year we went in the complete opposite direction. We are trying to find the spot in-between."

I just don't see how things progress when you take such huge swings trying to understand your car. It's almost as if the algorithms they use in modeling are fatally flawed for some odd reason.

They would be quite a bit further down without Lewis and George.

So Max can be beaten!

Brilliant drive by Lando to comfortably pull away from Max after the Safety Car and build an insurmountable gap.

Lando has always had the talent.
Now he has the car to go with it.
Thought Piastri was going to get on the podium, too.

My favourite race of the season so far. Lando comes across as a really nice bloke and deserves his maiden win.
Hopefully it’s the first of many.

Yes the SC played its part, but Max hadn’t been happy with the car all weekend. After all when did you last see Max drive into a traffic cone?

Also good racing down the field. Worth staying up for the highlights. But it’s 2:42am here. Glad it’s a holiday tomorrow!

Mercedes is essentially in Year 1 with the W15 when everyone is in Year 3 for ground effect. The priority for Mercedes is to see if they can develop the W15 enough that they can carry it into 2025 and finally be competitive in 2026. The alternative is they get the chassis and aero just good enough if they're able to develop another monster engine to make up the deficit and over come the flaws in the car should they still fail to understand the ground effect regulations.

At least parc fermé rules do not come into effect until just before GP Qualifying in 2024, so the teams can use both Sprint Qualifying and the Sprint Race to help determine setup for the GP sessions. One could argue a 19 lap Sprint race is more relevant to determine how the car will respond in the actual race than just tooling along amongst a field where some are doing race simulations and others are doing qualifying simulations and nobody is really pushing.
I would love to agree, but in the light of serious accidents, using a Sprint as a test session is counter-productive, you might gain a little bit of understanding that is costly in terms of parts, look at the fiasco with tubs and drivers, and that was only a FP session, you injure a driver to the point they cannot take part in the rest of the weekend, then?

Sprints are of no value, cheap insulin high, the FIA must be doing crack or meth or something to be convinced that sprints are of value.. Wait until there is a fatal.. it could happen, as drivers cannot be trusted to not be drivers..

I’ve just got up to watch it now, my first race of the season and the first time I’ve watched the Miami race. Hate this circuit but I want to see Lando’s first win. He looked chuffed from the clips I’ve already seen and well deserved. People say it’s been a long time coming but it really hasn’t. You’ve either got to have a top two car or be in the right set of circumstances to drive well, and he did that.

The Channel 4 presenters are so much better than the Sky crowd too, it’s just reminded me why I don’t miss watching the Sky coverage. Far less cringe and the insights seem so much more authentic.

So McLaren is hosting Donald Trump at the Grand Prix.

Part of me hopes Norris and Piastri take each other out in the first corner, but just because Team Management are doofuses should not penalize the drivers.
Without getting political, Trump being a guest at the Mclaren team is the first F1-related news I’ve seen make headlines in my local newspaper in years. There’s nothing about Norris in the article and it’s all about how a British team is indirectly supporting his re-election campaign.

Don't agree with that as Sainz's car broke traction when he tagged Piastri and most of the cars were looking squirrelly all race so I see it as a Racing Incident.

Sainz looked clearly faster, but Piastri was better on braking to keep him behind.
100% agreed.

oh well

I expect it to be "normal service has been resumed"...

I’m of the opinion Ferrari has squeezed everything out of the SF-24 and we won’t see much at Imola.

It will be interesting to see how the MCL38 handles deg at Imola. I expect Pirelli to bring a one step softer tire. The upgrade on the MCL38 seemed to light the fronts significantly quicker. Miami was not a great circuit to evaluate wear.

The RB20 is the unknown. I think they are very concerned about the McLaren.

Why?

Also, I've not seen the entire race. How did Lando get the lead?

Also, I've not seen the entire race. How did Lando get the lead?

He inherited it when the cars ahead of him cycled through their pit stops under Green. Then Logan was taken out and that generated a Safety Car which allowed Lando to have a quicker pit stop and not lose the lead. The Safety Car then picked up Max out of habit so they had to cycle the field past otherwise Lando would have had almost a full lap lead.

I have to chuckle when the commentators call it a cheap pit stop, from the red bulls point, it was actually very expensive... Because the cars are trundling around at 80km/h, instead of 200 at that point, you come in, there is no overtaking, so timed right, you gain time.. But that is the gamble you take, wait for the SC and win win chicken dinner, or you could mis time the safety car, as some did with the VSC... This is why it is is a team sport, there have been wins lost/won as a result of a stubborn nut.. Or back in the day, some muppet driving off with a long hose.. Kind of miss the refueling.. It was actually quite an exciting race, would have prefered the 3 FP sessions, the Sprint although exciting, to me cheapens the race as there is potential for degreaded full race as cars are damaged or unable to partake..

Norris' car had a full set of upgrades and was internally referred to as a "B-spec" version. Piastri had some updates, but not the full set. Both will have everything for Imola.
