Not really a surprise but sad he couldn’t make it to the end of the season. That crash in Zandvoort was the final straw or large bill then. Franco Colapinto is not a name I’m familiar with but he at least gets to show his potential before Carlos comes in

I thought the same, I guess Daddy Stroll will want to know why his cars are crappy.. That crash will help sales of other brands.. Maybe the FIA should have checked the car before going out...

Any rumours of who the replacement safety car driver will be?

But seriously, looks odd - did something fail on that car?
It sure looks like it, either a brake issue or suspension failure by the way it's squirming at the end of the straight. It's easy to forget that the safety car is often driven on the edge of grip and performance while the F1 drivers are complaining about it driving too slow. This crash really demonstrates how fast it actually is going.

I remember when it was a Mercedes CL55 coupe - a huge four seater luxury coupe, a massive boat of a thing. The driver had to push it very, very hard.

They also had some bespoke C55 AMG sedans built for those purposes as well (I think about 4 or so).

The first proper Merc safety car was probably the CLK DTM AMG (supercharged V8) and then when the SLS AMG came along I remember Maylander was very pleased.

Surely it's time for an AMG One safety car. ;)

Reminds me of Gerhard Bergers active suspension failure at the 1993 Portuguese Grand Prix when he exited the pits and the car put itself into low drag setup mode which made it violently steer left when he put his foot down lol.

Or Ericsson's crash at Monza when his DRS failed to close.

An unbalanced car is dangerous under braking at high speeds.

I just saw another clip of the safety car crash and there one can see that the rear right rotor is glowing red (see screen shot). None of the other ones are glow as far as I can tell, so definitely something wrong with the brakes. In normal braking the fronts should be the ones doing most of the work.

Kimi fast for the 10 minutes he was out before he binned it and Colapinto looks like an upgrade for Williams.
