I have an idea since I'm currently studying this. How about adding a Nextgen TV tuner, since so few are available?
That makes the device support the new Emergency Alert System, as well as any 4K broadcast programs if ever some appear.

Why not push it through the Internet that the Apple TV 4K is already attached to?

Can’t believe this thread has gone this long without anyone mentioning audio passthrough. The AppleTV doesn’t even need to support TrueHD and DTS:X, just pass it through to our receivers and we’re good.

Because different countries do OTA broadcasts on different frequencies, Apple would be forced to sell a lot of different versions around the world, which would cost a fortune on a low-margin product.

We’re lucky it has a power cable.

Apple‘s not big on cables…

As far as it goes, I would think if they aren't going to bring it out until 2024 then WIFI 7 is going to be the coice. You can already buy WIFI 7 routers, and they will become Ubiquitus next year. On the other hand, the prices are going to be high until 2025. But then WIFI 8 isn't going to make waves until 2027 or 2028, so going WIFI 7 makes a lot of sense.

I just want an Apple TV box that connects to my 4k LG flatscreen without blinking every couple minutes and pausing the stream. (Yes, I'm using the super-expensive Belkin HDMI cables.) Can I finally have that upgrade?

C'mon now, really? The widely accepted definition for "Pro" is "Professional". Apple has obviously muddied that definition (AirPods Pro???) but "Pro never really meant for professionals" is just wrong.

Apple has used the Pro moniker more as a marketing tool, Mac Pro aside; which is what I meant by my comment. It has come to represent the upper end of their product line, IMHO, more than "this is the this is the only one designed for use by professionals."

Look at the 13" MBP, which is essentially a Touch Bar Air.

An Apple TV Pro is senseless.

I disagree. An ATV capable of running console quality games would be an iterating product that could shake up the game industry; especially if the price point was compelling. The "Pro" moniker would be no different than AirPod pros, again a marketing move.

If they go a little overboard trying to get the Apple TV into true gaming territory, the price will start competing with the Mac Mini. Certainly, you are going to need a lot of space for games.
It begs the question, should they just re-purpose the Mini as a game machine instead of the Apple TV?
Although the interface on the Apple TV is pretty awesome and that would be lost on the Mini.

I need/want
  • Atmos and DTS-HDMA audio pass-through to my receiver.
  • Wifi6e or Wifi7 support
  • 2.5G Ethernet Port
  • HDMI 2.1 4K 120hz or 8K 60hz support
Price I am willing to pay: $250

I am in no hurry and Apple can release one after another trash tier Apple TVs, year after year and I won't buy them if they don't meet my above 4 requirements.

I want Safari. If Amazon can do it, Apple has no excuse.
Homekit, on the Apple TV itself, so you do not need an Iphone or IPad to set up the (Homepod) speakers. I bought the Apple TV, just let me attach speakers without a third device, sheesh!!!
Apparently, Apple TV is already capable of 120hz but Apple will not unlock it?
Also since you can start a podcast or music and leave it in the background, (while gaming for instance) I would love for Apple to add a simple vol mixer on the interface similar to what Spotify does for the Xbox.

Congrats on writing an entire article about a possible new version with zero new features. Zero.

Didn't they release a new one this year (2023)?
Starting with the second version, Apple would release a new model Apple TV every other year. Then there was a period when there was a long wait between models, and they then introduced the App for smart tv's. At that point I thought the box was dead. They then released a new model, and now they are back to every other year it seems.

That's not the writers fault, that's what Apple does with new Apple TV's, basically just a faster chip every time.
I've bought every model starting with the second one (minus some minor revisions) and it's basically not changed that much feature wise. Most likely when the 2024 model comes out it will feature a faster processor and that's about it.

seems to me these :apple:tv do not need the
the…
that port we used to reach the internets in the late 90s?
ummm
whats that thin yello or grey rope with plastic cat rg7 plug called again?

The thing is Ethernet controllers/ports are super cheap. It probably costs them a dollar to add it. It’s faster and more reliable that most people’s WiFi by a lot. Especially if you’re streaming local content. Or if your somewhere with a ton of WiFi congestion it’s a nice feature. If my Apple TV was close to my router I would 100 pct connect via Ethernet.

Apple TV 3rd gen 4K: $99

Apple TV Pro (A17): $299

Apple TV Pro Max (M3): $499 (but that might be a 2025-2026 thing)

Apple TV is probably the best streaming box on the market… however… people just don't seem to want to pay what they are asking. Especially considering how cheap other offerings such as Amazons firestick are… that get the job done for most peoples expectations. I have an Apple TV and Isometimes wonder if i should have bought the firestick.

Im not sure what they can do besides reduce the price… and probably…

If they made the gaming side more of a real proposition… i think they would be on to a winner. The last two generations are more powerful than nintendo switch (i have one and its amazing).. so the limitation is not the hardware but the software offering side.

Take a look at iOS conversions such as the stellar Alien Isolation as an example… imagine that on Apple TV in a darkened room with Airpods Pro on…

Games like that and its a decent all round casual gaming/entertainment system.
Use a Fire stick for one evening and you’ll know why you have an ATV! 😜

I know some people don’t like using the smart part of smart TVs, but personally I barely see the point of an Apple TV anymore, especially since nearly every smart TV now has AirPlay and various Apple Apps built-in. I can’t stand having multiple remotes.

1. Fix Chroma Upscaling so it uses Bilinear vs Nearest Neighbor. Using bilinear was a downgrade from the Gen 2 making a softer picture.

2. For the love of Jobs , separate the smart home devices from the ATV device. They don't logically belong together and there is money to be made here.
