They need to include a camera, or at least do generic webcam support. Nobody wants to fuss about with continuity camera, but I’d do FaceTime calls with interstate family on the tv in a second if it was always ready to go

  • Any additional Ultra Blu Ray advantages are matched if not exceeded so there is truly no hardware advantage to Blu Ray

Incorrect. At least those of us that have fully kitted home theaters. AppleTVs Atmos rides on a highly compressed DD+5.1 codec. 4K discs offer massively higher bit rates for Atmos. Along with DTS-MA, DTSHD, TrueHD. All of which sound much more dynamic, punchy, or whatever word for “THIS SOUNDS EPIC” fits.

I use my ATV for a lot of content, but for big flicks, always disc. The sound is worth it. Sound thrives on bit rates.

You’ll see I didn’t comment on picture. While AppleTVs video codec uses a lot more compression than disc, it looks pretty good. There’s been only a handful of scenes where I’d say the streaming version sucks compared to disc. I’ve done direct comparisons with my media.

In the end, it’s the less dynamic, almost DRC sound, the AppleTV provides for Atmos (and missing full DTS) that leaves me wanting. Due to how large those codecs are in the full disc mode. I don’t see them coming to streaming any time soon.

Use a Fire stick for one evening and you’ll know why you have an ATV! 😜
I have 2 Rokus and an Apple TV. My Rokus were like 30 bucks each and the Apple TV was 149. The Apple TV feels way way nicer to use, interface way nicer and I love the changing screensavers and the way it’s setup. Definitely feels way way more polished than the Roku and way nicer to use. However, 90 pct of the time I’m just streaming video so it doesn’t matter. And is it really like 100 dollars more nicer? I don’t think most people would think so when they can get a Roku or fire for like less than 1/3 the price or just use built in smart tv apps.

I need/want
  • Atmos and DTS-HDMA audio pass-through to my receiver.
  • Wifi6e or Wifi7 support
  • 2.5G Ethernet Port
  • HDMI 2.1 4K 120hz or 8K 60hz support
Price I am willing to pay: $250

I am in no hurry and Apple can release one after another trash tier Apple TVs, year after year and I won't buy them if they don't meet my above 4 requirements.
Me too HOWEVER.

DTS-HD MA is 24mb a/s bit rates. TrueHD is 6mb to 18mb a/s. Even classic DTSMA is 6mb.

There’s simply no way this is happening over streaming anytime soon. This is why I continue to buy ultra br discs. The audio quality is far beyond streaming’s capabilities. AppleTV almost sounds muffled or employing DRC when compared to discs. I even buy or have kept 1080p br discs not available in 4k simply for their DTSMA audio.

I wonder why Apple doesn’t compete with the big gaming companies. They have fast chips and great hardware, but they seem satisfied with mostly just Apple Arcade-type games.

The latest Apple TV could most definitely compete with the performance of the Nintendo Switch or possibly even previous-gen Xboxes and Playstations. And an A17 Pro-equipped Apple TV (with additional RAM) could probably run with the current-gen consoles even.

It doesn’t bode well when you have Valve pulling Counter-Strike from the Mac due to low player participation. Pro gamers aren’t investing in Mac computers because Mac isn’t investing in serious games. They routinely get ports after PC or not at all.

Hoping Apple starts to compete with Nintendo, Sony and/or Microsoft in some way. They’re a big enough company. They’d need some exclusives because just porting everything from other platforms will do very little for them to gain traction.

Having said all that, I love the Apple TV for what it does now. I’ve used Smart TVs, Roku, Amazon Firestick and consoles for streaming, and none are as capable when it comes to reliability and overall user experience. I’ve had the 4th gen (later called HD), 1st gen 4K and am now currently on the 3rd gen 4K. I’ll upgrade again if there’s a compelling reason. The 2nd gen 4K didn’t offer anything for me.

Unless the next has A17 Pro (or above) or an M chip, I won’t be interested yet. I’d just wait for the next one. I’m happy that Apple at least keeps upgrading it.

So much potential, just make it very powerful and take on the consoles at last instead of farting about with sub switch apple arcade crap

I want to see what apple silicon is really capable of !

There is potential here if Apple would re-enter the home wifi business. An ATV with all the features of the Airport? And...a VPN service on board?

I'd buy an ATV that had a OTA tuner (ATSC3.0?) and coax antenna connection. That will almost for sure never happen. But...it really would be cool.

The only feature I really want is loading full movies to local storage so that I can watch it without any interruptions should internet connectivity go downhill.

Disagree. This whole "Pro" thing is getting out of hand and losing its meaning.
remember..all words are invented...so how its named its irrelevant..its just for conversations its shorter to say its name and the whole spec sheets

Love my Apple TV, it's the 2021 model and works really well, fast, good interface. Glad to see Apple still working on it.
I will say though if Nvidia ever update the Shield Pro I'd get one of those too to sit alongside Apple TV for some apps, but also game streaming as I have a few I bought in it like Half Life 2 when I had it.

But I'd put my Apple TV, which was a gift, as one of my top favourite gadgets.

Why not make an Apple TV with the A16 and an Apple TV Pro with the A17Pro chip for people who want the better gaming capabilities. That would follow the iPhone model in terms of features and price points.
Not the right time, too early.

The a17 is a powerful chip, but still not there yet, in my opinion. So a premium for an Apple TV with an a17 pro chip won’ t sell.

Apple needs to get more AAA games on its Mac platform, that makes more use of the power of a future m3(pro/max/ultra) . After that Apple should design a slimmed down chip just for a new console.
Will take at least another 3 years.

I won't be rushing to upgrade my Apple TV 4K 2nd gen. My only TV in the household is still only 1080p capable and my current plan is to keep that TV as the main TV for at least another year or two before jumping on the 4K TV bandwagon. I want OLED as my current TV is 10+ years old plasma, so hence I am not rushing to just buy a cheap 4K LCD TV. I would rather have 10+ years old plasma than a new crap LCD TV.

I have 3 apple TV's all different gen's. The 4k I have in the living room is just so good. I have eARC HomePods running as a pair, which are better sound than my LG 4k tv, for me the next version needs to have capability to add more home pods. I would like to have rear speakers for real surround sound.

Also would like bluetooth so I can use it without internet. We have a motorhome and would love to be able to use an Apple TV in there. At the moment I dont see a way I can as we won't always have wifi

I have an idea since I'm currently studying this. How about adding a Nextgen TV tuner, since so few are available?
That makes the device support the new Emergency Alert System, as well as any 4K broadcast programs if ever some appear.
ATSC 3.0 is mainly a US and South Korea-only thing so far, and as you say 4K broadcasts are still way off. Given the licensing and hardware cost, it's probably not attractive for Apple. And they wouldn't want to advertise something that competes with Apple TV+.

Laughing at console quality games…. Apple TV has the worst games even some you can download and can’t play. The Apple TV app store needs some love

Fastest UI on the market - no lag which makes it great. Lots of tweaks though. For example, the volume to bluetooth devices is too low. My Amazon Echo Studio has to be on nearly full volume with Apple TV at full volume to get anything decent (via bluetooth). It would be nice if you could get some sort of game streaming product on there like GEForce Now / Xbox Cloud.

I have current and previous Apple TV 4K. Easily the best streaming device. Also have a FireStick 4k just for comparison. While the latter works it feels cumbersome, slower and generally less fun to use.

I would like to see an Apple TV with no power supply internal, USB-C PD (and maybe option to add USB-C IO). Maybe even shrink the size of the box so it can be placed on back of TV. I don’t use Ethernet. Connect via WiFi 6e router and 1Gbps connection which two rooms away returns a speedtest of just over 700mbps. Ethernet could be retained or made available on USB-C with a PD power injector type connection.

Mainly driven my desire for minimal size but I also wondered if this would reduce cost - lack of PSU, less shielding, no need to have a separate model for each market etc. Could it even be fitted into a TV stick similar to Intel Compute Stick (nice idea, badly delivered).
