7600GT is a fantastic card :)

How do you get that card in the current iMac.. on the Apple Store I have to choose between:

# ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO w/256MB GDDR3
# NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS w/512MB GDDR3 [Add $150.00]

For both the 2.8 and 3.06.

Thanks for the info and maybe a newb question.

Wait a minute here. Since when is the video card in the iMac upgradable? Did a new iMac come out and I missed it?

Hugh

I don't know about the current aluminum iMacs, but the white Core 2 Duo (at least my 24" size) has a socketed card, so--IN THEORY--some third party could make an unofficial replacement for it. (Stranger Mac upgrade products have happened!) "Potential" is all you can really say.

As I understand it, my iMac has a desktop-class NVidia 7600 GT, but made in the form factor for a laptop-style (terms escapes me) GPU slot. The connector is standard, but the space it must fit into is not. So it would have to be a card made especially for the iMac.

Anyone know if this "potential" still exists for the newer iMacs?

I think the 8800 GS is significantly better than the card originally mentioned in this thread.

The original post is from 2006, when the 7600 was in the iMac.
