Update to my chiming in.

Suddently and without warning, tethering fully works in both bluetooth and usb with my MBP. I know I rebooted the MBP recently, which may have resolved an issue that was the problem, not the phone itself.

As for the downgrade question, yes I have a 3G, but I directly applied a stock 3.0 firmware in DFU mode. Don't know exactly what is the issue with keys though, but this worked for me.

There, I fixed it!!! works again, no hack...

READ THIS BEFORE UPGRADE TO 3.1 (or higher)

The hack from http://help.benm.at/ is the very cause why tethering goes away.

I spoke to Swisscom (my local provider) and told me, that if Apple "sees" the hack on the phone, it is deactivated when you use it for the first time after that.

So, simply erase the mobileconfig and any trace of that hack and THEN update you phone to 3.1.

If you're unlucky like me, you have to erase the entire phone and setup a new one... you cannot restore from a previous backup.

It's a little more work, but I will manage to rebuild my phone from iTunes.

Enjoy the solution!!!!

This cannot be correct as I have never had the Behn hack and I cannot native tether on 3.1.2

However, if you buy MyWi (brand new version just out last night) and install it, it enables native tethering as well as tethering with MyWi.

Have no idea why, but there are lots of posts about it all over. Seems to work for everyone.

The response is correct, I called back my support and they confirm it is CARRIER BASED support. The fact that I hacked it, Swisscom (or Apple) killed it. Swisscom supports Tethering on 3.1 without any hack, which was not that case before 3.1, you had to use a hack or a homemade mobileconfig file.

It's down to your own provider it seems. I am lucky Swisscom allows it.
