Yes, you will lose it. No idea if it will ever be enabled again.

If you need tethering, DO NOT upgrade to 3.1.

I say again, can anyone confirm if tethering still works for Rogers? I have updated iTunes to version 9, but if it's going to break tethering I'll either revert back to the older version of iTunes or just never sync my phone again...

Still looking for an answer... Does tethering on Rogers still work? Yes or no?

Tethering seems okay (without testing)

All the functionality is still there in the settings. Haven't tested the tethering yet.
(Rogers 3G, on to 3.1)

Would you mind testing it out? From what I hear it's only after you try to use it that it's functionality is revealed as crippled... I'm hesitant to upgrade because I know I'll need tethering in the very near future.

If you need tethering, do not update to 3.1 under any circumstances. Read all over the website, they see the ability on 3.1 but once they activate it, it literally disappears in front of their eyes. I put a lot of work into downgrading to 3.0.1 because for us 3G users, 3.1 was pointless, it was really updates for the 3GS and apple and AT$T trying to block jailbreaking and hacking their phones. I believe from this point on (meaning 3.1 and on) we will have to pay for the tethering option. I'm not willing to pay $30 for it when I can just do it for free.

Hi,

I have a 3GS on ATT, and I use the benm thing to enable tethering on my phone. Will I lose this feature if I update to 3.1? Is there any way to get this back on 3.1? Should I just chillax and not update to 3.1 for a while?

Thanks!

Nobody I know has got it to work, there is an odd post earlier in this thread where one person said they upgraded and the Benm hacks still works but that person made only 1 post ever so I think that was misinformation on his part.

Just don't upgrade dude. I've heard nothing on the internet about people having a work around yet.

To confirm recent reports from some other Rogers users, tethering on 3.1 still works. This message was sent from a tethered MacBook Pro.

Excellent sir. Thank you very much!

No problem. And it's Ma'am, not sir. :>

Interestingly, my home office can be a dead zone for Edge or 3G. Neither were active at the time. So Rogers tethering doesn't depend on them, but the connection was painfully slow.

I thought Rogers officially supports tethering so why do you need to hack the OS?

I can't say for Rogers, but here in Spain with movistar, tethering is allowed for free, however it uses a different APN from that of the iphone.

This causes two things:

1) The tethering option takes 10 seconds or so to work because hte iphone has to establish a new connection to the tethering apn

2) the speed of that apn is pathetic.. always limited to 128k on my own experience.

So with 3.0 and 3.0.1 I had a custom ipcc that used the same apn for tethering and normal data. I barely use tethering however, maybe once a month at the airport.

I'm trying to find an ipcc form the 3.1 firmware but I guess until we see a jailbroken filesystem we won't have a peek at the inners of the new ipcc structure.

Authorised tetherer!

Well get this, I PAY for the tethering and the option has completely vanished from my settings! Haha

Any suggestions? Yes I have called o2.

I don't. I was worried that Apple just arbitrarily disabled the service for all devices. It wouldn't be the first time that I, as a Rogers customer (who pays for said services), have had to suffer without features because of either Apple or AT&T.

Rogers

Thought I'd chime in with some signal (non-noise).

I have an iPhone 3G on Rogers. I had firmware 3.0 jailbreak, then upgraded to 3.1 jailbreak (which resulted in the phone feature not working), went back to 3.0 stock, then itunes upgraded to 3.1 stock, then reapplied 3.1 jailbroken.

Everything appears to be fine now, been using it for a week. Just realized today that tethering, while available in the menus, and is activated when I connect USB or Bluetooth (ie: the blue bar at the top "Tethering"), but absolutely no data can go through.

Free version of PDAnet does route data properly, so it really is the tethering that is railing, even though appears to be active.

Now a friend of mine, with the exact same setup (but his upgrade sequence was directly 3.0JB -> 3.1 -> 3.1JB), also with iPhone 3G on Rogers, reports fine tethering.

No idea what my problem is though, but it does appear Rogers clients will not have a tehering broken "in normal scenarios".

Any new word if there is a way to downgrade from 3.1 to 3.0? Wasn't staying current for 3.1 and made the mistake of upgrading. In a week I need my tethering back.
