I don't recall complaining. I answered a question about whether I really use it.

Try some decaf.

Excuse me. That comment wasn't directed at you. It was just a general talking out loud comment. My apologies. It's directed at the whiners in this thread.

Tethering on Rogers?

Does anyone know if tethering on Rogers in Canada still works with 3.1? It certainly should... we're paying for the service.

Fair enough. I'm not going to complain about a hack being broken, nor do I think that anyone has room to gripe about a hack being disabled.

That being said, it is tough not to complain about Apple kowtowing to a provider instead of unleashing device capabilities as they usually do.

The grumbling about AT&T overflows into the Apple realm by association it seems. Until the exclusivity contract expires or AT&T addresses issues, the grumbling will continue.

I would assume it would... Wouldn't make any sense to downgrade.

Nope but then again I've been paying for tethering since the iPhone came out, and the only reason I never had the feature until very recently was because AT&T couldn't get their **** in order.

Updated to 3.1 and tethering IS still working here on my iphone 3Gs . I'm with O2 ireland.

(Thankfully I have netshare still just in case)....

No longer working for me on AT$T, using BenM method. USB or Bluetooth.

Bummer. Only time I ever used it was when my POS router gives up on me. Might be time to get an Airport Extreme after all.

Still working here as well, on ATT and 3.1

Did you actually try it or just looked to see if it was still on the network screen? I saw it was still available on my network screen, but when I clicked it on, the screen went away and it wouldn't connect.

What method did you use to enable?

Seems you are right, it was there, I tried to use it then it disappeared ... oh well.

I got my Netshare working again. So I'm happy to just wait until someone hacks it again or AT&T decides what to do.

also, my 3GS reboots itself every other day, and i'm on my second one. Apple dropped the ball with the 3GS. i had no problems with my 3G except it would crash when i played music in my car haha but that was because of the processor/ram that was later upgraded in the 3GS.

I had that problem on my first 3GS for about a week; then one day it died and I had to go an have it replaced. No more problems ever since.

I just went into Settings -> Network Settings -> Internet Tethering, and toggled it to. Selected USB only. Looked to be ok, but then my phone suddenly jumped back to the homescreen and I no longer have the Internet Tethering menu at all. I was using AT&T, 3.1 and the BenM hack.

Long story short: AT&T + 3.1 + BenM = Fail.

Don't Update iTunes Or iPhone OS if U Like To Tether...

AT$T USA Customer here:

Updated to iTunes 9.0 (Mistake)
I still have iPhone software 3.0.1 with BenM Tethering hack.

I can tell you this:

If you like Tethering, DON'T update either iTunes OR the iPhone software yet. I have updated my iTunes to 9.0. I synced. No problem. Now while tethering and I receive a call, the tether drops. That did NOT happen before. Then I received a popup stating if I want to enable tethering on my iPhone, to contact AT$T. And you have to go BACK into the iPhone Settings | Network crap to turn it back on. It's like a soft kill that iTunes placed on the iPhone.

I've tried to revert to the previous version of iTunes but Version 9 updated the library file, bla bla bla. A previous version of iTunes will not work. I should have made a copy of the library file or backed up. Ugh! So I'm stuck here - with iTunes 9. Tethering still works, until I receive a call. Prior to 9, tat wasn't the case. Hope this helps...

I rarely use tethering. BUT when I do, it's because I need it and can't get a signal any other way. And I don't feel like buying a latte or begel to get a silly Wi-Fi access code.

Time to jailbreak and take this pig underground.

Don't come into a thread about tethering and express your opinion about why you don't see why tethering is a big-deal. its counter-productive.

When you stay in a hotel room in any city in America, would you willingly pay the $15 a day for their crappy wi-fi, or simply open your laptop and plug in your iPhone and get to the internet for free?

Any road warrior knows that free, virus infected wiFi hotspots aren't as ubiquitous as one would think.

Proof

So AT&T can clearly support tethering on their network but chooses not to, and then goes to Apple to have them intentionally break it for those of us who need it.

Not right! >:-(

AT&T has always support tethering on their network, you just have to pay a ton for it.

I just downloaded 3.1 after upgrading to iTunes 9 earlier today, and as has been written here, my tethering is now gone.

It really pisses me off because I have an older laptop and I was using the tethering just to use my phone as a WiFi antenna since my computer doesn't have one built in.

well you forget one other fact. AT&T can force a phone to update to 3.1. All it takes is for a force update pushed to the phone or have it the only way the phone can even use their network is have 3.1 on it.

I would not be surprised as soon as Apple can figure it out that a force update will be shoved to all the phone not up to 3.1 and those that can not be updated get kick off the network at a certain point.

I think it's extremely unlikely that there would be a forced OS update.
