I can confirm that 3.1 breaks tethering.
I used the Benm hack. I am on AT&T. I attempted to tether to my Mac using bluetooth.

What happened was I initially read this thread so I decided to try it out. After I updated to 3.1, I turned everything on like usual and then tried to pair the two. They wouldn't pair so I tried to set up the iPhone as new under Bluetooth preferences and tried it again...still no luck. Then I decided to double check if tethering was on and not just bluetooth itself. So I check on my iPhone and to my surprise, the tethering option which was there a few minutes ago suddenly disappeared. Very strange how that happened..

I was just wondering, I'm on O2 and had the profile hack for some time now, used once just to try. I am going away next week to the country, and was going to leave the laptop as O2 have made threats in the news regarding tethering. So yeah, I was wondering if anyone has been using it regularly in the UK without issue?

Oh also according to coverage maps I will have edge access at best, will that be a problem?

This is correct, 3.1 does remove the option, now i have to downgrade to 3.0.1... sigh

Wow, this is ridiculously confusing. Some are saying that the BenM hack does work with 3.1 through ATT. Others are saying that the option to network is no longer available. Is there any definitive answer on this?

By the way, tethering with BenM through ATT in California via 3.0 as well.

Thanks.

Would it make a difference if it used the usb sync cable?

I had the 5.1 hacked carrier file, updated to 3.1, option was gone. Re-downloaded the Benm hacked file, option still gone, im restoring my phone and trying all over again. I'll let you know what happens.

i wish someone would release a bug fix log for firmware 3.1.

for instance, is that high pitched tone gone after you send a txt message to someone?

also, my 3GS reboots itself every other day, and i'm on my second one. Apple dropped the ball with the 3GS. i had no problems with my 3G except it would crash when i played music in my car haha but that was because of the processor/ram that was later upgraded in the 3GS.

rebooting on its own sounds like a phone problem. I have a 3Gs and it has never rebooted on me.

people are confusing themselves i believe. i'm 99% positive that tethering hacks are disabled, regardless of which method was used (if you are an ATT user in the US).

are you sure of that? play a playlist on the ipod, turn repeat all on, then check it in a few days and see if "play all" is still highlighted.

like i said before, i'm on my second 3GS(due to the first rebooting). first one i jailbroke, this one i haven't done anything to. still stock everything. after one week, i was in my car listening to music, then all of a sudden it just rebooted. i'm able to tell when it reboots itself when i'm not using it because i just check the "play all" in the ipod.

OK gang, here's the scoop! After I installed 3.1 on my iPhone and it rebooted, the Tethering option was STILL available on my iPhone (Settings/General/Network). I could even flip it on and off on the iPhone! But then.... on the very first time I tried to actually tether with my MacBook Pro, the MacBook reported that the Bluetooth Network was unavailable! And, low and behold, when I looked back at my iPhone, the Tethering option had COMPLETELY disappeared from the iPhone!

I have this sneaky suspicion that Apple put in code that double-checks with AT&T whether you are a legit tethering customer, and, if not, F*** YOU! Away it goes, gone from the iPhone!

iTunes 9 itself does not break the tether running that right now. I didn't use the benm hack, I used the iTunes debug mode to load custom preference file.

The 3.1 Firmware update breaks the tethering option, not iTunes 9. I'm still not updating to 3.1 FW, I'm using 3.0.1 FW with michaeljohnston hack on my 3GS iPhone, while the War Department has 3.0.1 FW with benm hack....

yup that sounds like what happened when I first tried enabling tethering with 3.0 and was using some of the other methods that didn't quite work.

so this time they did a more thorough check.

screw 3.1 then.

Anyone try to re-install the Benm hack after losing tethering from the 3.1 install?

I wont be updating to 3.1 if it breaks tethering. Too bad, I was looking forward to re-organizing my apps on my computer instead of the phone. Oh well.

Any way to restore to 3.0.1? 3.1 did nothing for me, no new features that are nice to have, and my battery is just fine. With the hack i had everything working already lol, MMS, VVM, Tethering. 3.1 was just a big update to remove all the hacks so att can make money.

Agreed, only problem is soon they are going to have that you can't get apps unless you have 3.1 and that space marine looked sooo cool.

When trying to downgrade to 3.01 I get an error #1015 and it says connect to iTunes.

I think it has to do with the baseband version mismatch. Any suggestions?

Did you all honestly think 3.1 would not break tethering? Lastly, what is the whole deal with tethering? Do you all REALLY need it?

Besides, tethering is not officially supported by AT&T yet, is it? How can Apple break something that's not even there yet? Or is the breakage observed in the countries where tethering has officially been supported?

Yes, agree that of course a new version of the firmware will break a feature that's not suppose to be available.

Tethering is nice. I carry my 17" MBP around with me and can get access anywhere if I don't have wifi.

Tethering is cool when you need it. However, wifi hot spots are all over the place. If you don't have wifi, I can understand but honestly - I don't get all the fuss.

Only when I don't want to pay a fee for access when mobile.

Ok, so you complain about something that isn't available and your not being charged for? I don't get it.

Tethering is NOT available "legally" and won't be for some time. You get quite a few people whining and moaning about it every single time an update comes out. Please - stop already. NEW UPDATE = BREAKAGE of pretty much ANY MMS or tethering hack you have. That's why it's called a HACK. Get a grip, calm down and be patient. If your that freaking unhappy go get a blackberry or something already.

Seriously. Some of you should read your posts. You sound like 2 years olds.

I don't recall complaining. I answered a question about whether I really use it.

Try some decaf.

It's a big deal for me since I travel 4 days / wk 48 weeks per year. I've been getting around 2 megabit speeds when tethered, while my hotel wifi barely gets 25 kbps. Since I use it for work, I would gladly pay for the extra convenience if AT&T would finally roll it out. I don't want to get tied to another 2yr contract and have to use a USB dongle to get it though.
