That answers my question, guess I'm staying with 3.0, damn be the extra features.

which tethering method did you use?

if tethering works for anyone, please specify exactly which hack you used to enable tethering. thanks.

+1

Using a custom ippc file is NOT working and I've tried a few now.

Just updated to 3.1 on O2 in the UK and tethering still works using the BenM method (not even had to re-apply the hack since updating).

the tethering hack, i believe, only applies to us U.S. users.people in the UK already had tethering enabled from firmware 3.0 and didn't need a hack for it.

someone please correct me if that's wrong.

Unless a USA AT&T user gets on here, updates to 3.1, and confirms tethering works, there's no way I'm updating.

AT&T US customer, no way am I installing 3.1 unless its confirmed that tethering still works.

EDIT, I'll probably find out tomorrow. A couple of friends have it on there iPhones, but don't need the tethering so they are upgrading.

Let's consider iTunes 9 and 3.0....

If Benm/(US) AT&T tethering gets broken with 3.1, I will want to stick with 3.01. But will THAT work if I switch to iTunes 9? We're playing a game of chicken here, eh? :)

that's a good point but I think that unless iTunes has some explicit instruction to disable tethering while syncing there should be no risk. after all you don't need iTunes to be running to tether.

it would be good if somebody confirms. cus I would be very very unhappy if tethering breaks.

Currently running 3.1 on AT&T. Tethering is no longer working.
The option to turn it on has been removed from the "Network" settings.

I can confirm through my own installation on an iPhone 3GS that 3.1 DOES break the benm tethering hack. It is still working. I am an AT&T user and live in California.

I use the BenM profile hack. In the US. I'd like to know if this still works after updating to 3.1.

Anyone in the same situation as me?

I have to correct my original statement. Tethering is broken on my iPhone.

The option was still there after I updated to 3.1 but when I actually attempted to tether it failed to connected. Then it was no longer an option.

I installed iTunes 9 about an hour ago and I've been playing with that. Unfortunately, iPhone 3.1 is required to be able to sort apps in iTunes. (At least, I can't figure out how to do it with iPhone 3.0.) So, I'm installing 3.1 on my iPhone 3GS right now.

I've had tethering working since 3.0 was first released. Tethering continued to work through several iTunes updates and minor iPhone firmware updates. I activated tethering by hacking iTunes to allow me to manually install the appropriate ATT .ipcc file way back when, whatever that method is called.

Anyway, I'll know in a few minutes whether 3.1 breaks tethering for me. I'm also on AT&T and in California.

BTW, if I lose it, no big deal. I did it more out of a curiosity than anything else. I bet I haven't used it more than 5 minutes worth in 4 months.

Apple you tease. I didn't have tethering enabled but after 3.1 installed it showed up as an option. If you switch it on it hides and doesn't work.

iTunes 9 itself does not break the tether running that right now. I didn't use the benm hack, I used the iTunes debug mode to load custom preference file.
