I say again, can anyone confirm if tethering still works for Rogers? I have updated iTunes to version 9, but if it's going to break tethering I'll either revert back to the older version of iTunes or just never sync my phone again...

I have an italian iPhone 3G and also had the tethering option after installing 3.1. But after plugging it in via USB and activated tethering it was suddenly gone...

BUT I still have a data counter below the mobile data counter in Settings > Usage > Tethering Data.

Someone else has found this too?

I'm still using 3.0.1, but upgraded the itunes to v9
and I'm still downloading and syncing to itunes
the custom ipcc for telkomsel (Indonesia) still works.
so it seems the itunes is not the cause of the problem (hopefully)

Correct, no more tethering with 3.1. I just installed mine, thought I could pull it off somehow by re installing the tether steps. No no, that sucks...oh well I'm sure soon someone will find out how to tether through 3.1.

well you forget one other fact. AT&T can force a phone to update to 3.1. All it takes is for a force update pushed to the phone or have it the only way the phone can even use their network is have 3.1 on it.

I would not be surprised as soon as Apple can figure it out that a force update will be shoved to all the phone not up to 3.1 and those that can not be updated get kick off the network at a certain point.

I don't think so!

The iPhone firmware package is 297MB of data. AT$T won't let you install apps over 10MB. Do you REALLY think they would push an update of that tremendous size to every iPhone on their network?

I rarely use tethering but do need it on some occasions. There is nothing I need, in the 3.1 update, that is worth losing it.

As I said before, if you don't give details your comment is just noise, how do we know your setup so we can compare it to ours dum bum.

Same here, the option vanished after I tried to use it.

Updated iTunes, downloaded but DID NOT install 3.1. AT$T - tethering still works fine for me. Located in Milwaukee.

I did need to reset my network and reinstall the Benm profile.

One other related note: I had not attempted tethering since I had my 3gs replaced on Saturday (bad mute switch). The reinstalling of Benm may be related to that.

Well obviously I said I updated my software to 3.1. There is not much else detail I can say about that hahaha. Thanks for letting me know your like "detail" I remember next time so you....can be satisfied with others opinions and comments.

Are you on O2 or AT&T or Rogers, those details would be a good start, which I thought was pretty obvious.

Also learn to construct a sentence btw, your reply doesn't really make much sense.

No but the point stands. AT&T could at some point just lock out all iPhone that are not on 3.1 or later. They can shove out a message for any data call that kicks out a message telling them to update the phone.

My fault, I am with AT&T. After I put the 3.1 software on I went back to see if my tethering was there, it was gone.
Ideas on how to get it going again?

Did you all honestly think 3.1 would not break tethering? Lastly, what is the whole deal with tethering? Do you all REALLY need it?

Yes I didn't think it'd break it. I figured they'd overlook it honestly because it wasn't "official".

Secondly, it's FREE internet access virtually anywhere you go.

Thirdly, yes, I use it ALL THE TIME, and it's way better than paying some additional monthly fee for "unlimited data" that I already have (it should be MY choice HOW it's used). Yes I ask for a lot.

:)

Yep.

I can also confirm this. I just wish I had looked here before updating. The option to tether disappeared the first time I tried to use it.

The ability to easily move and sort all of my applications in iTunes was FAR more important to me than tethering. Gotta have both iTunes 9 and firmware 3.1 to take advantage of app organizing in iTunes. I went in with my eyes open and, frankly, kinda got a chuckle out of the way the Tethering option disappeared before my eyes. It's almost as if Apple and/or AT&T were playing a joke on us! :)

Wow. Glad I didn't install 3.1. I just wish AT&T would just allow it already. I hate this mobile phone BS where functionality is arbitrarily switched off by the carrier.

Is tethering via BENM broken by 3.1? Any way to get it back?

Hi,

I have a 3GS on ATT, and I use the benm thing to enable tethering on my phone. Will I lose this feature if I update to 3.1? Is there any way to get this back on 3.1? Should I just chillax and not update to 3.1 for a while?

Thanks!
