absolutely horrible battery life on 3.1 on my 3GS. Battery was really good on 3.0 and then got worse through the betas and now its the worse on 3.1 final.

I used it as much as I could today both over 3G and WIFI and I got 4hrs usage, 12hrs standby.

Buy Ringtones and Organize Apps

Supposedly, with itunes 9 and iphone 3.1 you can organize your apps in itunes by dragging them on to a virtual screen and then syncing them to your iphone.

Also, you can supposedly download ringtones wirelessly on the iphone from the itunes store and buy them with a tap.

Unfortunately, you're not given directions on how to do either of these things. Anyone know?

Maybe I'm not seeing the full picture.

But why are 30sec ring tones equally priced or more expensive than the full song?

because they are preying on the people who are easily put off by anything technical (even though creating a ring tone is not) or simply don't know how to do it.

The app organising is really easy, once you have connected your phone to iTunes on your Mac click on the icon that shows your phone then click on the application tab in the main screen then you just drag and drop the selected app. That easy!

As for the ringtones open iTunes on the iPhone then click more on the bottom bar, click on ring tones from the drop menu and hey presto, but why would you buy a 30 second clip for more than what you can buy the full track plus you can make your own ring tones from any music purchased through iTunes

I've tried to move the app icons on the Applications screen, but they just drop back into alphabetical order. They can't be rearranged on this screen.

As for the ring tones, one can get certain selected ring tones from the drop menu on the iphone, but I don't know how you can make a ring tone from any music purchased through itunes. Before itunes 9 some songs on itunes had a small bell logo that indicated they could be made into ring tones. Once you downloaded one of these, you could click on the bell and make a ring tone for another .99. Now that little bell icon is nowhere to be found on itunes!

Plug your phone in and then navigate to your Applications tab.

3.1 on the 3G

Not sure if anyone noticed this but my 3G boots off and starts up a lot quicker. It used to take like 30 seconds to shut down and now it's almost automatic. Very nice...also the Application management is kind of a joke...They probably could've set it up a lot better.

I have not passed by this little tid bit but it looks like screen shots are now PNG files. I'd rather have JPEG.

I also see the faster startup/shutdown. Other than that, no performance differences that I've seen yet.

Personally, I like the App management. It's something I've wished for, and it's better than having nothing.

Specifically, how do you manage the apps? I still can't get that clear  I go to the Applications screen and try to drag the app icons into a different order, but they bounce back immediately into their original alphabetical order. What am I doing wrong?

You don't organize them from the Applications screen. You do it from the Applications tab under the iPhone screen. Where you sync. Not the primary list of apps.

I will wait a week or so before upgrading. Maybe more. After 3.0, I just don't trust these updates. I wanted this one to fix the wifi issue.

OK. I'm not a technophobe, although as an English teacher I'm naturally disabled from having any ability in this area, but I'm definitely one of those who doesn't know how to do it. So, how do you do it? :D

Open iTunes on your Mac or PC and connect your iPhone, select a song that you wish to make into a ringtone (this must be one that you have purchased through iTunes) and right click the song, select create ring tone from the drop down menu from there you can choose the section of the song you require and how long you wish the clip to be!

Hope this helps :D

Thanks very much. This solves the problem for me, and in a way that I can understand.

All the video I had encoded with Handbrake with the Apple TV setting can now sync, previously none of it could, hooray!

The YouTube app is still really inconsistent in it's ability to download full videos.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3GS (White, 32GB): Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7C144 Safari/528.16)

Really? 720p stuff can sync now?? That's very cool. I can stop having to do two encodings ...
