A new OS version is not needed to enable MMS, just a carrier file update. 3.1 will be out between tomorrow and the 15th. AT&T will release a carrier file update on the 25th to enable MMS. The OS will still be version 3.1.
Or AT&T customers will get a 3.1.1 update while the rest of the world will still be on 3.1.0. That would be less confusing.
That "software update" doesn't mean it has to be 3.1. Apple could release 3.1 tomorrow if they wanted, and then AT&T could issue a carrier update file on Sept. 25th. What about the rest of the word that already has MMS on 3.0? Do you think Apple is going to wait and release 3.1 when the US is ready for MMS or do you think they'll just release 3.1 with the new iPod touch and make it downloadable for everyone else at the same time?
I bet we'll see 3.1 tomorrow... but I'm not going to hold my breath... I have 2.2.1 to hold me over.
Here in Spain a carrier update released MMS. Basically I had two updates. Update to firmware 3.0 and then a carrier update.
So yeah, I would agree that a carrier update is the only necessary update to enable MMS.
Remember 1.1.1? Announced early September and released until the 25th or so.
I would think that history tends to repeat itself.

I know all about 3.0 and 3.1 but, I like 2.2.1 for now. I'll consider upgrading when they've ironed out the bulk of the performance issues and UI glitches. Thanks for letting me know about copy and paste though.
I've had no performance issues or UI glitches in 3.0. Also, 3.0 lets you do in app purchases!!!!

Anyways, to stay on topic, I think that we are all wrong and it wont coincide with any event. I agree it isnt necessary for MMS.
Well, I have performance and UI glitch issues, so let's leave it at that. 2.2.1 works great for me. I don't want to turn this into a 3.0 vs. 2.2.1 discussion.
Cause many of us are already using MMS on 3.0 and 3.0.1. Its in the OS the carrier update file is what is needed to "unlock" this feature in the iPhone.
The carrier file will update the same way firmware updates take except it will be a lot quicker to download and sync to the iPhone, unlike firmware updates.
That doesn't rule out the firmware to be released the 25th. You are giving me your perspective of why.
That doesn't mean it'll happen. I on the other hand expect it so since Apple already did it once (for 1.1.1) and can well do it again if they please so.
True, it'd be easier to release one major tomorrow and a small one later, but that still doesn't rule out the big update the 25th.
Also, having 3.0 means nothing as I know 3.0 is well capable of MMS.
That's the thing: the MMS part has nothing to do with Apple. Apple will only release one update: 3.1. The other update will be one released by AT&T: a carrier update.
Agreed, although there is no news coming from the iPhone Dev site, no GM post, I'm still going to go with this.
