It doesn't matter that only a carrier update is needed to enable MMS. Apple will just bundle 3.1 with that said update and release it all on the 25th. I haven't seen apple release an update right after a show in a long long time. They'll announce 3.1 will be available the 25th tomorrow. Either that, or they won't mention it at all and leave us guessing until then.

That doesn't rule out the firmware to be released the 25th. You are giving me your perspective of why.

Also, having 3.0 means nothing as I know 3.0 is well capable of MMS.

Well yes Apple could wait but why should they have to keep the 3.1 features from everyone just because AT&T is dragging their feet? It didn't stop Apple from releasing 3.0 which what was needed to actually make the iPhone itself capable of MMS. Now that parts in the firmware itself its up to carriers to make it available and since carriers can update the iPhone to the new carrier files

So yes having 3.0 does matter has it helps prove my theory on how this may happen.

Secondly there is nothing in 3.1 that will update the carrier files this is something different and that is handled by ATT. And is a file that ATT will update the iPhones with via the carrier file update on the 25th.

I don't think they will release 3.1 tomorrow either, since the GM isn't out yet, but that doesn't mean they will release it on the 25th either. They can release it whenever they want, it doesn't matter when AT&T is releasing the MMS update.

Just like they edited the carrier file way before 3.0 came out. So, like I said, 3.1 soon, and the carrier file on the 25th. The beta testers would know more than anyone about 3.1 though. What actually could happen is we get the carrier update and then 3.1 after the 25th.

I am a Dev, the 3.1 is rolling with the 4.5 carrier file. The MMS options are there but the last I checked (WEEKS ago) they still don't function.

As far as I know... they stopped seeding 3.1 betas over a MONTH ago. There's definitely a surprise hidden in 3.1 that they don't want leaked. THAT'S why there's no GM yet. I think they may announce 3.1 tomorrow and seed the GM to developers so they can have time to get their apps ready for the official 3.1 launch.

One of the benefits of being on the dev program is to get the updates before the public does. Nah nah nah nah naaaaah naaaaaaaah ;) :p

See now that's reasoning that one proves my theory wrong and secondly, one I can get behind.

Now to just become a developer myself and suck it up and pay for the Developer fee.

2.1 was released for the iPhone and iPod touch (1st gen) on Sept. 12, 2008... however, 2.1.1 was released for the 2nd gen iPod touch on Sept. 9th (came factory installed on them).

So we could see 3.1 launched tomorrow on the iPod touch 3rd gen and see 3.1 for everyone only a few days later!

*IF* history repeats itself this year.

3.1 tomorrow and on the 25th, we'll see 3.1.1, with carrier files and bug fixes.

Didn't the last beta have issues though? If so, wouldn't they need one more beta?

After the keynote for devs. 3.1 - GM along with a public release of 9.0

3.1 public next week perhaps on a Friday after everyone has updated to 9.0

Apple does not always seed a GM. It is possible they will do a release without one. Apparently, augmented reality apis are the main changes in 3.1. 3.0 had a GM because of the massive amounts of API changes.

I voted neither. OS 3.1 will come out next summer because that's when Apple has been releasing all iPhone OS's.
You're thinking of iPhone OS 4.0, not 3.1.

Right. The GM for iPhone OS 3 was the exception, not the rule.

That said, they've been very quiet on the dev site lately, and they stopped seeding in late July, so... they're probably up to something.

I think 3.1 will be released in the tomorrow to this-Friday timeline. 3.1.1 will not be an MMS update.

MMS on september 25 will be provided through a Carrier Update, not OS update.

Or AT&T customers will get a 3.1.1 update while the rest of the world will still be on 3.1.0. That would be less confusing.

honestly, i dont see why the carrier update couldnt be done over the air. its small enough that it wouldnt be a huge strain on the networks if they rolled it out at night or in the morning. and then we will get a text from att telling us that we now have mms, restart your phone and the camera icon will be there.

is that at all plausible?

Probably and correct me if I'm wrong Apple hasn't designed the iPhone OS to get OS updates of any kind OTA (mind you this isn't an OS update but I think that functionality would have to be in place for that to work.

well its not really an os update, not saying your wrong, but maybe this will be a new feature in 3.1 . it couldn't be that hard, android and the pre have it so why not us iPhone users?

Well, it has been posted somewhere around here that 3.1 Beta 3 expires on September 15th, so it has to at least be seeded to developers before then.
If it's not released tomorrow, then GM will seeded to developers and, as iphone.aggie said, public release will be on the 15th.

Didn't the last beta have issues though? If so, wouldn't they need one more beta?

Perhaps Beta 4 will be seeded tomorrow and GM/Public release will be on the 15th, the date you have said it will be.

I think AT&T already told us when 3.1 is coming. They said MMS will be available September 25th along an iPhone Software update.

I think that should be enough for a smart mind.

AT&T could be speaking of a network update to the iPhone. I've gotten them before when I plug in my iPhone and it aks if you want to install this, it's usually a really small file that just updates everything. MMS is already built into the phone.

It'll be released the same day as MMS. 9/25

I don't see why. MMS is already working and enabled in the current software outside of the US.

It doesn't rely on an update so why would they coincide it with the date that AT&T finally switch on their MMS service?
