MMS is out. It works already. Outside the US we have it already. It does not need 3.1.

I am hoping that 3.1 will have some new features, not present in the developer release.

Apple does not seed developer builds for public bug-checking. It has QA procedures for that. The developer builds are to allow 3rd parties a chance to test their code against API changes.

Top of my wishlist is unified mailbox.
Crossing fingers now.

We are not debating whether MMS works or not. We are debating whether 3.1 will come out tomorrow or the 25th. AT&T said a software update was coming the 25th, so its safe to assume that update maybe in fact 3.1

Possibly but 3.1 is NOT required for MMS Secondly I don't think Apple wants two updates going out the exactly same day for the iPhone think of what it will do to the activation servers etc.

They are two separate files and will need essentially two separate updates to accomplish their respective updates.

You don't need two separate updates. All you need to do is bundle the Carrier Update (if that's what's needed) and iPhone Software Update together and you got the 25th's promised update by AT&T.

Take 1.1.1 iPhone Software update. It was available until September the 27th even though it was announced September 6th by Apple along with the introduction of the first iPod Touch.

Once again I do not believe Apple will do this due to ATT dragging their feet on enabling MMS. 3.0 was a big deal as it enabled MMS in the OS side of things. They chose to release it when they did and let ATT do what they had to do to get things ready.

Apple will do what Apple will do. Regardless of ATT and their decisions.

I agree with Goodeye. Why should everyone else in the world (who already has MMS) have to wait for 3.1 just because the US carrier isn't ready yet?

You do not believe but Apple already did it once and can well do it again. (This will be like the 6th time they announce a release date of their software well after its announced 1.1.1, 1.1.3, 2.0.0, 2.1.0 and 3.0); all of those a good amount of time after the OS was announced. Just because you don't want to doesn't mean it won't happen.

So, yes, be expecting the 25th to be when 3.1.0 is released.

Do you really think they would update twice in a month?

What do you think the update would include for today?

I heard that other people in different countries who upgraded to 3.0, were presented with a separate carrier update AFTER 3.0 was installed.

The carrier update does NOT have to be in the 3.1 update. I don't think Apple should sit on 3.1 just because AT&T won't be ready until the 25th. The rest of the world already has MMS and the iPod touch needs an update just as bad as the rest.

So yeah... it seems dumb for Apple to sit on 3.1 until AT&T is ready.

What if Apple is not waiting on AT&T? Apple has been known to have the update ready long before it is even announced.

In the case of 1.1.3, it was compiled for GM Decemeber 14th and the update wasn't released until the 17th of January.

2.0.0 announced at the beginning of June and released a month later July 11th. Again, Apple sitting on updates.

So yeah, it can well happen again. I am just following the clues here and being realistic.

3.1 will be released today. I tried to update my touch to 3.0 today and the update has been pulled from the store. Good indication that it's just about to be replaced by 3.1.

Coincidences do happen. So I would now be doubtful but still may just mainatanence...

Also APPLE STORES ARE DOWN~~~ OMG WTF BBQ

I don't think 3.1 is coming out today, but I don't think they *need* to wait for AT&T. I think 3.1 will come out possibly next week or a few days after today's event. Either way, I'll get the GM before "regular" people do. Hehe. I love it!

The Apple store is down and this affects the Apple Store in iTunes. So it possible the update server is just offline because of this as well. It doesnt necessarily mean anything.

How may I ask are you getting that precious GM?

I'm a beta tester for Apple. I gave them $99 for this privilege. :D

Note... I did not say "developer" because I haven't written a single line of code using the SDK. I just like using betas and submitting bug reports to Apple so that YOUR experience will be better. You can thank me later.

Thank you [now that I got that out of the way].... although I want to be a beta tester, I can't justify giving Apple $99.

Cant I just thank you now, seeing as I'll invariably forget later?

So, let me get this straight... You PAY Apple for a Dev account and you report bugs -- But you aren't Developing anything?

You never cease to amaze me buddy. ;)

why would anyone need to wait on AT&T. it doesn't change how the network is used. if anything it's full of bug fixes. thank god.

But they won't be bundled together for the very simple reason that only AT&T customers will get a carrier update for enabling MMS - everyone else got one when their carriers automagically set up their phones for MMS ages ago. Carrier updates can and are released by individual carriers from time to time anyway and are entirely separate from firmware updates. Here in the UK we got one a month or so back for no particular reason and with no announcement at all - it was simply installed during an otherwise normal sync with iTunes. See here.

Based on iphone_dev's tweet yesterday ("Rock Out without Lockout: http://is.gd/31Ngr Don't lose your iPhone software unlock this week."), I think 3.1 today is certainly within the realms of possibility.

They made the tweet warning you not to update in case it's release this week. It by no means is meant at telling you 3.1 is out today.

And by the way? What is stopping Apple from bundling them together? Nothing.
