Speed is not the main difference, and it's far from being night and day,
That’s how I’d say it, too. It’s not like what was before was “horrible” because I just didn’t even know it could be THIS good.

Well devs need to catch up. They should have already (all my favourite app devs are quick off the mark - that’s what dev betas are for). Ask the dev.
The current rumors for Genshin are that it’ll be in the next big release next week. Nothing to really complain about, just something interesting I noticed.

Another SMALL thing I noticed, not sure if it’s in settings or not, but now when in landscape mode, the volume rocker takes the orientation into account. In portrait, it’s volume up and down. In landscape, it’s left, volume down, right volume up.

I justified my upgrade from my 2020 iPad Pro 11 inch to the M2, though the 2020 version was doing just fine, with a fairly decent trade-in. This is more of a want than a need, but what the heck if I can get a good trade in, making the new M2 price tolerable. 👌

To me the big shocker is the ridiculous trade in price by Apple and even more OP’s intention of selling a 2018 iPP for 150bucks?!!!
I’ve said it before, no one devalues Apple hardware quite like Apple does. I find their trade-in offers insulting. If I don’t sell it myself, I’ll usually turn to Gazelle.

How much was the trade In amount ? For your 2020 I got $245 for my 2018 iPad Pro which was more than fair.

I have used a M1 11” iPad Pro since late 2021, upgraded from a 2018 iPad Pro and sure, it‘s not a noticeable difference as its only a little bit faster given that iPadOS isn’t fully utilizing the full potential of the M1. However, I notice that it can run more apps without reloading is a big plus.

So it seems like the biggest deal is the additional ram. I mean if you get a decent value on the old 2018 iPad Pro trade in, that's cool, but it doesn't seem like a crazy upgrade for my use case (web browsing, email, photo editing). I'll pass on this one. I don't think an extra 4gb of ram is a big enough upgrade for me but that's just my opinion.

They also forget that there’s at LEAST 5 billion people that have never had any of Apple’s devices ever before. :)

I upgraded from… nothing. I bought the 12.9 M2 to complement the clunky windows laptop issued by my employer. What a pleasure it is to use this tablet.

And am I the only one that actually enjoys using the stage manger? I have several groups of apps organized, some for work some for personal and although not perfect it works like a charm for my needs.
I agree! I think Stage Manager is incredible as well — zero issues for me — makes the experience more Mac-like. As this continues to get refined, I see myself using the iPad in more situations.

I'm still getting used to Stage Manager. A few times, I've gotten frustrated with the arrangement of applications, but I think it's a user error, not a software issue. 🤣
I’ve been using just one application per tab, just to keep it simple — unless I have a tutorial video running next to the app I’m learning.

What’s also neat is that you can turn the feature on and off through control center.

I upgraded from a 2020 model iPad Pro 11 (A12Z) and I definitely see improvements in performance, though I don't yet consider anything game-changing about the M2 iPad Pro. Of course it's a more capable tablet but my 2020 iPP was handling my workload very well.

Respectfully disagree. The 2018 iPad pro still performs well.. almost too well because it highlights how Apple has done nothing of use to justifiy the Pro moniker on these devices. iPad OS has barely evolved at all, sure we have features like Lidar but what’s the point? Have apple even demonstrated why we would use an iPad Pro for that?
I’m inclined to say anyone with a 2018 Pro or later shouldn’t bother upgrade.

Wow just unboxed and setup the M2 iPad Pro, the faster storage and RAM are immediately apparent based on how fast Updates takes and how fast Apps install.
WiFi6E thanks to having a WiFi 6 (non E) router let’s me multitask even when my Gaming PC is doing a major update and so is my 11 M2 iPad Pro.
On paper there is No Increased Brightness but I’ll say Hands down after 4 solid years my 2018 iPad Pro was dimming and it was clearly not a vibrant as the new M2 11” even if I maxed out the brightness it would trigger some type of Auto dimming to preserve battery life that’s not happening on the M2 iPad Pro.

I’ll forgive last years M1 iPad Pro buyers there’s nothing here for you. This is from the perspective of an old 4 year old iPad Pro which I just traded in for $245 at the Apple Store (I was gonna sell it for $150)

If OLED is confirmed for 2024 I don’t want it. Period. And what’s on tap for 2023 IMO it’s a skipped year same as 2019 was.
Do you find the screen having a bit more ghosting than the 2018 like me? I’ve compared both screens and the new ones seem to leave a bigger trail when moving white objects/icons over a dark background.

No I did that classic red text on a blue background and didn’t get any also as with the 2018 iPad Pro I found this was due to Apple keeping a slower refresh rate to save battery. When scrolling or typing there would be ghosting or trail smear of text. But when I enabled Or ran C.Anatomy it’s a 3D anatomy app that wakes up the GPU. Any trailing or blur was always gone. Even now on my new M2 there’s a faint trail or blur to text. But all I did was run Fruit Ninja and come back to typing this and all that trail or blur is Zero less than my old 2018 iPad Pro. You just gotta trick the iPad to run the GPU and any blur or ghosted text is gone.

But what “game” is it changing? What can one actually DO with an M1 or M2 iPad that they couldn’t with the A12X? The only stand-out feature for me in my M1 12.9 is the display. It’s a luxury. But it doesn’t really let me do anything that I couldn’t do with an older iPad. Maybe by iPad OS 17 or 18, when Stage Manager finally works correctly and other truly “pro” features and apps have finally made their way onto the iPad Pro, will I actually feel like the M chips make sense.

This update just doesn't feel compelling in general. You could rock a 2015 iPad Pro and still wait for the next redesign.
If you haven't updated to the M1 yet, you surely do not need the M2 extra

only M1 and M2 iPad Pros can output finally a fully filled external display. It’s amazing and with the new M2 and 10 Core GPU it’s silky smooth.

Really depends on what you do. For 95% of what I do I can't really tell the difference between my 2018 and 2021 11" Pro (other than the screen is cracked on my 2018 but that is another story). I don't expect the 2022 to be much different.

Some Tech Reviewers obviously bash the new M2 and say the M1 is a better deal. However, i was in the same boat as you and came from the 2018. I love my new M2, and I'm glad I spent the money. Every year, Apple always has minor improvements. These small improvements accumulate over four years; I think some reviewers forget that. Every model does not need to be a whole revamp. Yes, little bummed we didn't get the horizontal camera, but we got an M2 in a smaller form factor, and we know we will eventually get a revamp. It's a great tablet that compliments everything I do for my workflow. Cheers!
I feel like they do recite that if you're coming from the previous generation it's not much of an improvement, but if you're coming from any generation before that one then you'll see improvements. Most reviewers I've seen echo that reasoning

I had the iPad 1, When it was new for 3 years and thought it was amazing. And dummy me I packed it in a suit case and it got stolen in a Vietnam baggage room. I bought a used iPad 3 and used it for years, Now my wife has it. I bought a iPad Pro M1 and Love it. Not enough changes with the M2 chip to change to a new one. I agree with you by buying the Best at the time and stay with it until you have a need to upgrade. It's funny how we move into our Machines like a home. A New Machine is like a new house and we are a little lost until we settle in. BTW the iPhone 14Pro the Purple is too Subtle, I wish it had some Vivid pop like the red iPhone.
