I have the 2017 10.5” iPad Pro. Still runs but battery life is atrocious and it’s buggy occasionally. I’ve put off a new iPad the last two years, but I’m thinking the M2 is the one I want. This helped put it in perspective a bit. Thanks!
Yeah I don think the 2017 10.5” has HMP heterogeneous multi processing. Which in short means All the cores can’t work together at the same time.

Wow just unboxed and setup the M2 iPad Pro, the faster storage and RAM are immediately apparent based on how fast Updates takes and how fast Apps install.
WiFi6E thanks to having a WiFi 6 (non E) router let’s me multitask even when my Gaming PC is doing a major update and so is my 11 M2 iPad Pro.
On paper there is No Increased Brightness but I’ll say Hands down after 4 solid years my 2018 iPad Pro was dimming and it was clearly not a vibrant as the new M2 11” even if I maxed out the brightness it would trigger some type of Auto dimming to preserve battery life that’s not happening on the M2 iPad Pro.

I’ll forgive last years M1 iPad Pro buyers there’s nothing here for you. This is from the perspective of an old 4 year old iPad Pro which I just traded in for $245 at the Apple Store (I was gonna sell it for $150)

If OLED is confirmed for 2024 I don’t want it. Period. And what’s on tap for 2023 IMO it’s a skipped year same as 2019 was.
Made an account just to say thank you. I also have a 2018 12.9 pro and have been going back and forth with if I should or not. Couldn’t find much regarding comparisons between the two.

From the 12.9 2018 you'll find a bigger difference than with the 11" pro, since the screen has been upgraded and the sounds is louder and fuller, not sure if it's because the speakers where upgraded or if it's because the M1/M2 are thicker (and heavier) and therefore they can resonate more.

Despite me thinking the 2022 iPad Pros seemed a bit 'meh' (and I did wish it had the camera position changed), I ended up deciding to go for the M2 12.9" (vs my current 2018 A12X 11") and already ordered the Magic Keyboard with the BF sales. At least it'll feel different. I couldn't decide on colour though so bought both magic keyboards (white and black), but am thinking I might go silver for iPad this time rather than my previous space grey since my 14" MBP, iPhone 14 PM, various Apple accessories are all varying shades of space grey/back now.

The next dilemma is given my main objective is to use it for office work where I have a lot of multitasking, many windows, and plan to use external 3840x1080 display, should I get the 1TB model so it has 16GB of RAM. Not sure if it makes more of a difference with Stage Manager vs 8GB than the M1 model where reviewers seemed to imply 16GB didn't make much difference.

Congrats on your upgrade! The trade-in value shocked me, however. Shortly after the release of the Air 4 (so, say, Oct-Nov 2020), I checked the trade-in value for my 9.7-inch iPad Pro. I laughed it out of the room… $170. I’d never trade it for $170. Not then, not today. But I was curious. How much does Apple think my absolutely flawless 9.7-inch iPad Pro is worth now? $45. Apple, I wouldn’t give you my 8GB iPhone 5c on the worst iOS version ever released for it for $45.

The trade-in values can vary wildly and are usually disappointing. But sometimes they are higher than what you'd get for a device anywhere else and that's why I actually used it once, in mid 2020, where the values for Intel Macs were high compared to the much lower brand-new-M1 pricing. Sold the Intel Mac instantly when I noticed it and bought a faster quieter M1 for the same money (around 1299, though I did have less storage with the M1 model, but that was a good tradeoff).

I even got to keep the USB-C power adapter that came with that Intel Mac, so now I use that second charger in the office. And Apple had a courier pick up the Intel Macbook for free saving me a trip to the post office. Confirmed they got it around 3 days later and had the money another few days later, it was really quick with no further interaction required from me.

Now the prices they offer are so low it's ridiculous. For a recent device that's even still within Applecare they offer 1k when it cost 5k brand new. I bet it would be back in the refurbished store for multiple times the offered price. Still, I'd always check that pricing just in case.

Thats not what Apple thinks its worth, thats what the 3rd-party company that handles trade-ins for Apple thinks it's worth.

When you call customer support it's also handled by a third party running a call center, when your Apple product is made it's a factory contracted by Apple and so on. By that logic, Apple is only the engineers and management in Cupertino. Especially Apple is known for the extremely tight control of their supply chain like few others in the world. Their contracted third parties aren't black boxes to Apple, Apple sets the tone. So when you get a trade-in value display on Apple's website you can rest assured that it's Apple that thinks this is what your device is worth.

Let's not pretend for a second that Apple lets a third party determine all on their own what value should be displayed for a used product on Apple's own website.

Honestly just get the battery replaced for 100 and wait for the next version coming next year since it should come with the M3 chip and a redesign.

I am updating from an iPad Air 2 and since there are no deals on the M1 to be found here in Germany I will just go for the 11“ 128GB M2 now.

Got 75€ in Apple gift cards from buying the Pencil and AirPods Pro just now, so will buy at the Apple Store.

Looking forward to it for sure!

My only real complaint is the camera should be moved to landscape. It's essentially unusable for me where it is now.

Wow, I am surprised it was worth it! Cool deal you got there. Another advantage is, and you proved it, that it is hassle-free. Very simple, very easy, no private selling shenanigans.

Yeah, like you said, I think they recently slashed prices for trade-ins even further. At this point I’d rather keep it.

Yeah, for devices sold refurbished, I reckon they’re resold for many times what Apple gives us, and for devices that aren’t sold - like the 9.7-inch iPad Pro - I reckon it’s kept in storage for replacements.

There was no new iPad in 2019….so, yeah.

I had to sell my 2018 in 2020, I only had my mini 5 and iPhone so the M1 was a major upgrade for me. When the M1 was announced with all those amazing features, I started saving. I would have bought the M2 instead but I needed the Pro before the M2 was announced. Plus the M1 still is extremely overkill for an iPad, but I’m content with my purchase. 🙂👍

How I didn’t let my ocd get the best of me and sell my M1 for an M2, was looking at them like the M1 is intels “Ivy Bridge” and M2 is “Haswell”.
Haswell was better, but not drastically; it wasn’t something people NEEDED to go upgrade nor were folks missing out on very much. M2 is great though (not a waste or useless upgrade like folks say,) *it has a good increase in graphics, but it’s still a small bump up of the M1. I’m curious/excited more on what the M3 increase will be at 3-4nm.
Again, these M processors are overkill… but appreciated, (still just not really necessary for iPad.) lol.

Yeah some of those are tech reviewers who are even sent free iPads. But this is a huge upgrade especially for Emulators and games.

I upgraded from a 9.7” iPad Pro to the M1 11” Pro in February, so I can imagine yo you it’s a big upgrade to the M2. And for gaming the M chip is a beast, it runs anything at max setting and high frame rates. It runs games better than the Switch if they are available on both systems.
For me it was a HUGE upgrade, and I’ve loved using it ever since, I take it out of its case to give it the odd clean and am in awe at its design and how thin it is. An amazing device.
Hopefully we will get more AAA games being ported to the M chip, No Mans Sky is coming soon. Wreckfest is brilliant on it.

I have both white and black MK. Also, grey and silver iPad Pro 11” (white/silver pair for my daughter). I would say, the grey + black MK is best combination. Also, my white MK looks slightly dirty (it’s not pristine - different than the black one is still remain pristine as of new). Also, the printed letter in white MK aren’t as sharp as the black one.

I still have an ipad Pro 9.7 from 2016 with 2 GB RAM and 32 GP storage. The home button no longer works and the battery is already pretty bad. I am still undecided whether to upgrade to a current M2 iPad.....Will it be night and day?

You don't use it for much if you've been okay with 32 GB storage. That barely holds anything. What in the world do you use it for?

surfing on the couch, youtube, listening to music, reading e-mails. but i like good speakers, want stage manager, 120 fps and need usb c with monitor support, the new air and ipad 10 are clearly too bad for me. i don't want to deteriorate.

Oh good grief yes! I noticed a gigantic improvement when I went to the M1 11" Pro!
It's faster faster faster, bigger space, smoother, not many things reload, Face ID is brilliant. Speakers are better I think, better screen.

Go and look at one in the store?

Some Tech Reviewers obviously bash the new M2 and say the M1 is a better deal. However, i was in the same boat as you and came from the 2018. I love my new M2, and I'm glad I spent the money. Every year, Apple always has minor improvements. These small improvements accumulate over four years; I think some reviewers forget that. Every model does not need to be a whole revamp. Yes, little bummed we didn't get the horizontal camera, but we got an M2 in a smaller form factor, and we know we will eventually get a revamp. It's a great tablet that compliments everything I do for my workflow. Cheers!

Exactly - each year-over-year improvement is relatively small, but taken over the years the sum of it is quite significant
