I still have an ipad Pro 9.7 from 2016 with 2 GB RAM and 32 GP storage. The home button no longer works and the battery is already pretty bad. I am still undecided whether to upgrade to a current M2 iPad.....Will it be night and day?
I upgraded from the 9.7-inch iPad Pro to the iPad Air 5. The difference is huge in terms of screen quality, but I use both for the same things. The 9.7-inch iPad Pro is on iOS 12, so battery life is half-decent, even if it’s worse than it was on iOS 9 before Apple forced me out of it. Performance is good, too, but I’m a light user. We use it for similar things I think. The only thing that’s a lot better still on the Pro is the speakers. They’re both louder and fuller than the Air. That said, it will be a cool upgrade I think, like I said, mainly due to the screen. That is in my opinion, of course.

How many hours of screen-on time are you getting? Is it on iPadOS 16?

My ipad is on ios 16 and my screen on time is currently maybe at 2 hours per day. I plan to use the ipad pro a lot more though.

2 hours per day, but how does that correlate with battery drain (i.e., how many hours of screen-on for, say, 50% battery used?)

Maybe 2 hours before 50 % battery. It´s still the first battery.
Yeah, just like first-gen 12.9-inch iPad Pro users have reported on iPadOS 16. 3-4 hours of screen-on time. Abhorrent. It’s such a shame Apple will keep obliterating devices forever.

I upgraded my 12,9 iPad Pro for the new M2 basically just for the new miniLED screen because I also have an 11 iPad pro M1 that I love. I must say that the only thing I'm not disappointed with my new 12,9 so far is the screen. In the performance department, yes it's better than the 2018, but not by far for everyday tasks. Compared to my M1 iPad ? I didn't noticed any difference. Also, the new 12,9 is much, much heavier compared to the 2018 one. With the smart folio, it quickly become uncomfortable to hold. Also, the battery on the 12,9 is garbage. If you like to have your screen brightness over 50%, the % drain in minutes, even when I browse the web. I barely reach 3-4 hours per charges.

Oh the other hand, My 11 M1 is great in almost every way so the M2 one shouldn't be different. My experience is only with the 12,9 one. I'm still on the fence if I'm keeping this thing or return it.
