My bet after hearing the price initally was £460, and think I'm sticking to it. But £449 sounds quite feasible too and it ends in a 9 :)

Shame but that's just how it goes here. £385 minimum (adding 25% from the raw conversion for tax and import duty) plus some rounding up would make £399 if we're VERY lucky.

Using as scientific a method as possible I have estimated the UK iPad prices for you.

I took 13 Apple products (iPods, Laptops and Desktops).
I took the USA prices and the UK prices (minus the UK included VAT sales tax).
I calculated the average currency conversion rate that Apple use across the 13 products.
For info the range was from 1.44 dollars to the pound to 1.56 dollars to the pound.
The average rate came out at 1.5 dollars to the pound.

I then converted the US iPad prices to pounds using the 1.5 rate and then added the UK VAT sales tax.

Here are the estimated UK iPad prices :-

iPad 16GB WiFi - £390
iPad 16GB WiFi+3G - £491

iPad 32GB WiFi - £468
iPad 32GB WiFi+3G - £570

iPad 64GB WiFi - £546
iPad 64GB WiFi+3G - £648

Just thought you might like the ball park figures.

I have a friend who frequently travels between UK and US. I'll get him to get me one for £308 ;)

And get them to pay the 17.5% VAT and Import Duty on arrival in the UK (as it is over their £145 personal allowance), or get them to break the law?

They seem reasonable to me.

Using Parkys numbers i'd go for

iPad 16GB WiFi - £399
iPad 16GB WiFi+3G - £499

iPad 32GB WiFi - £469
iPad 32GB WiFi+3G - £569

iPad 64GB WiFi - £549
iPad 64GB WiFi+3G - £649

Making it a straight £100 extra for 3G

Macbook is $999, £816 in the UK (would make a $499 iPad £408 at that rate)

Comparisons:
Logic is 499 in the US and £408 in the UK
MacMini 599 in the US and £510 in the UK

Just depends if Apple want to make them look more attractive by taking them under the 400/500 quid barrier.

£399 would be nice. I was expecting them to cost loads more.

Would be great if these were eligible for Edu pricing too! :-s

Why go for the £399 / £499 etc pricing?
Apple don't use the £X99 prices in the UK anymore, they are all odd meaningless numbers now. Have a look at the Apple Store.
I can't see any £X99 prices.

iPad $500 = £400
Carry case $40 = $35
iWork Apps $10 = £8

I need the case to take it to college and probably Pages and Numbers but if iWork applications are bundled I'll get the lot.

Hopefully some higher education discount on this.

Interesting, nice that they don't bother rounding to XX9 any more.

Parky's figures seem pretty good TBH, it just depends on whether the base conversion rate has changed, in which case the Apple rates might change with them (they did with the recent iPod updates, at the time the £ was pretty weak.) Thankfully I think the £ has recovered a bit since then so it could be spot on.

Still, I like to be pleasantly surprised by holding a small amount of pessimism so I'm still thinking a starting-at price of £460ish :)

The one true factor not mentioned is the cost of "currency hedges". Companies usually fix the conversion rate up to a year into the future. the cost of such hedge directly affect the price and not the actual currency rate at the current time.

then obviously is the lovely 17.5% VAT to consider, running costs of the UK operation etc

£399 anyone?

More importantly, why isn't it (the iPad, not necessarily price) even mentioned on the Apple UK site?

Mostly apple uk doesn't seem to care about items which are 'Psychological priced', one of the few products that are priced this way are the iPhone's (£349/£449), I would imagine since the iPad is such a key product they would want to do something similar and put it at £399

btw from from my quick look at UK/US prices the mac mini had one of the worst conversion rates.

Thats what I want to know as well, probably because they haven't finalised the 3G connectivity prices yet.

I reckon £440 ish is about right going by all the other Apple products at the moment. Question is will there be Education Discounts.

If there are discounts will probably go for 64GB 3G. :):)

They did up to the 1st January when the VAT went back up to 17.5% and cocked all the neat prices up. :)

It's weird. Can only assume they're waiting for the prices to be finalised? The Aussie Apple site has it though.

I wondered about the 3G prices but I can't see them even mentioned on the iPad pages (unless I missed them).

I'm also hoping it will be eligible for Edu discounts. Just not sure whether to go for more memory or the 3G option.

He could just take it out of the box, buy a case, put on some apps and fly through customs. Similar to what some have done when buying a MacBook over there and bringing it back :)

Although you'd class that as breaking the law I bet ;) :p

Those prices don't look too bad at all. I'll buy whichever is nearest to the £500 mark, if that happens to be either the 32GB or 64GB it would be great.
