What's the betting it will be £499??

I'd say evens. it's a widely accepted business practice to covert $US into straight £GBP as rip off britain is a 'punishment' for living in England.

The thieves and criminals who set these global pricing guidelines justify their stealing of our money by saying ' global currenty fluctuations'.

translated, this means " it's rip-off britain. shut up and pay up good sport, just like you have done for years...you didn't really expect to pay an equitable price for consumer goods, did you? you must be mad to think you would get a fair price"

I would be absloutley staggered if they didn't go dollar to pound straight in the pricing.

Someone posted a link to Amazon.co.uk earlier, that had prices up... possibly speculative prices.

It appears they are not listing prices anymore. Can you remember what any of them were?

Also, Apple is using the same tagline on their UK site as they do on the US site stating the unbelievable price, so hopefully they price it cheaper than what we're all expecting. I have my doubts though.

Well as long as the 32GB isn't too far off £500 I will probably get one (non-3G). Although I wouldn't be surprised if we see subsidised prices for the 3G version in the UK.

Don't forget to add 17.5% for the VAT. That gets you to £362. If you allow for import duties and whatever else England tacks on, I'm thinking £399.

I love it that these types of post always come out after every Apple announcement. The folks in the UK and Europe forget that US pricing never includes sales tax.

Sales tax is the US is fairly low, usually 4-7%.

Customs have the right to seize it.

Yeah, and you'd always have your fingers crossed whenever you took it abroad in the future... the people at customs are unbelievable when it comes to spotting what is legit U.K. merchandise and what is not.

If they do actually pull you over (slim, I grant you), you will be very lucky to get away with it.

After seeing the prices on Amazon very briefly, I reckon the entry level model will be £399, which ain't bad.

If it is priced like that then I will definitely get 64GB 3G version, especially as i said before if there is edu discount.

Ah the joys of being a mature student, money to buy the gadgets and the benefits of discount.

Dont Forget 17.5% Vat Rate Here In Uk

Macbook is $999, £816 in the UK (would make a $499 iPad £408 at that rate)

iPod classic is $249, £193 in the UK (would make the iPad £386)

£399 seem very likely based on those 2 quick conversions, I've noticed in general the iPod's seem to have better conversion rates compared to the computers.

WELL DON'T FORGET ITS ONLY 6% VAT IN THE USA WE PAY 17.5 HERE IN THE UK. SO £380 IS PROBABLY ABOUT RIGHT

I don't get this thread. From what I could tell when I've traveled to the UK on several occasions, that's just how pricing works. A $1 item in the US is generally not £0.62 in the UK. A coke in the UK cost, say £1.25. I get that same Coke in the US for $1.25 (£0.77).

A direct comparison: When I was doing a show in the UK a couple of years ago, I had to order some lamps. The lamp cost £14.50 (now $23.44, then almost $30). That same lamp in the US runs around $15.

So yeah, it's not just Apple that prices things like this.

Perhaps with actual prices but it really shouldn't be the case. The £ is not equal to the $.

However when you talk about contract prices, the US usually has far more expensive ones. I looked up that the lowest US contract for an iPhone is about $70 whereas the minimum contract in the UK is £30. SO in some respects we are better off but in others we pay more than the US.

Where do you get 6% total Sales Tax from? it ranges from State to State so in NYC it is 8.875% (State is 4%, City is 4.875%) which for the iPad 64Gb with Wi-Fi + 3G it is a total of $902.57 ($829 pre-tax).

Bottom line, it varies State to State :) also prices over there don't include Taxes, they are added in at the end.

/End of rambling :p

But if you take it out the box and just put it in your bag, how are customs gonna know you got it in the US?

They will still know. I don't know how exactly they know but they just do. I assume screening is in process.

So the two times previous I have bought a MacBook back with me and they did nothing means? I doubt they will do anything :)

I'd like to see £349 to really shift volume but I think it'll be £399 because they're probably only gearing up to manufacture a few million globally this year and it's already clear they're gonna sell everyone they make already.

Yeah, I'm guessing £399 too. Not bad I guess, but I am annoyed at how much extra Apple products cost over here.

On the US sales tax issue, some states don't even have the damn sales tax, and would I be right in guessing you don't pay it when you order online?

Plus, even with tax it ends up cheaper.

Nope, you pay sales tax online. Also, I live in Louisiana where tax is 9%. We have one of the highest sales taxes in the US. It's like 5% federal and 4% state or something like that.
I always wait until "Tax-Free Weekends" where they drop the 4% state tax to buy my Apple products. I can't handle the price.

I do think it's unfair for Apple to raise the price explicably.

If you guys want me to buy you an American one and ship it to you I'd happily oblige.

But then again UK folks would have to buy a converter and I'm not sure the American iPad would work with the UK iStores.

I didn't say that'd catch you 100% of the time.

I'd also rather not be breaking the law to do things.

As I said earlier... the problem will only arise if customs pick you out. That's a rare event but it happens.

I personally know of two fellow photographers who have paid the price for importing from HK when returning from overseas trips at a later date, neither that recent to be honest.

It happens, the customs guys know their job. Many have walked through the nothing to declare zone with an extra carton of ciggies or similar, you probably don't have a great feeling.

When I go on vacation, I want to relax, not fret about the retun leg and the potential implications of getting a pull.

This may be old news, but showing on the Apple UK site:

UK pricing to be announced.

It also says "Our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price"

So - we don't know how much - but we do know we won't be able to believe the price :p They could have at least changed the copy for the UK market

FWIW premium products are not sold on a cost plus model. Apple UK will be balancing where this sits in the current range (iPod / iPhone) and price accordingly.
