you forgot the the average person is an idiot and can not think for themselves.

If you were a business owner you would like it and prefer it stay that way, because it makes you money. Duh.

It's how today's capitalism works. I don't exactly agree with it all but it is the age of hype. Make something from it or just wait on the sidelines is your choice.

Why are people drooling over BMW M5s and Mercedes C Series when they could get the Honda Accords and Lexus IS which does every thing the aforementioned brands do?

1) We don't know what "activation" means. Google won't offer any explanation whatsoever. "activation" could mean someone changed sims and activated phone they already own, it could mean ANYTHING.

2) crappy buy one get one deals or FREE/$5/$10 crappy android phones running android 1.3 being sold in India or China is inflating this number as well. these crap android phones are being used as a feature phone running on a 50mhz processor and not as a smart phone.

3) and THIS. 30-40% return rate for android phones vs. 1.7% for iPhone??? android phones must be ridiculously crappy!

simply put, from my exp. with having a samsung fascinate and the 3gs and now ip4, the iPhone's are phones that can do everything a computer can. The androids and any other smartphone out there are computers that can make a phone call. Does that make sense???

Google already announced how its activation work.
It is phones/tablets that connect with Google services and each phone/tablet is only counted ONCE no matter how many times it is "activated". The IMEI number is only counted 1 time.

Really go fact checking before spreading your FUD.

Would that mean that the 30-40% return figure being chucked about means that the "returned" phones that are replaced with new ones will show as new activations?

(if of course people are just getting the phone replaced)

Have you read the source for that 30%-40% figure? The article is so lacking in facts I can't believe people are taking it seriously.

And yet every "normal" person I know who has an android device (DROID Xs for the most part; two I know have the DROID 2 and one has the Captivate on ATT) hates it. I like my DROID Incredible, because I'm a geek. But all i hear from friends are complaints.

So, color me skeptical. It'll be interesting to see what happens in two years, when first time Android buyers are out of contract and looking for a new phone.

the general opinion on Android phones is that they're crap and this kind of numbers aren't really surprising.

true or not, 30-40% return rate SOUNDS TRUE and people accept that.

Agree with the first part.

Second part seems to be a stretch. However, if they're actually true, I probably wouldn't be surprised. The numbers do seem a little high, though.

Four days ago, I got a Samsung Galaxy S2 to replace my iPhone 3Gs, and if the Galaxy II is not currently the best phone on the planet today, using the best iteration of a mobile OS today (Android 2.3.3), then feel free to show me something better.

And I'm using my mobile as-is. I haven't rooted or tweaked the OS through sophisticated means. It just happens to work well. To me, it's like the difference between multi-tasking on a Mac, and on Windows XP (which I still need to use at work). The 4.3" AMOLED screen is stunning, and the UI makes iOS look like it's aimed strictly for older people who are just starting to come to terms with touch-screen phones.
The OS appears to have been designed with fore-sight, as it takes advantage of the fact that most people now have internet access from almost anywhere by giving me live feeds and constant updates to nearly all my apps. In comparison, iOS just sits there like a limp d***.

The stock apps are all equally as good as the iPhone's stock apps, except iTunes.

I looked at Windows Mobile 7 and was willing to give it a chance, but it's not ready. Between Android, iOS, and WM7, I think it ranks dead last. Funny enough, I think WM7 would be the best OS for a tablet (next would be the BlackBerry PlayBook's OS, while Android and iOS are tied for last). The tiles used in WM7 make complete sense on a larger tablet screen, which would favour large, clickable, live tiles, but not so much on a mobile phone.

Me neither.

That, or that data isn't recent.
