Just played Far Cry 3 for about an hour. Graphics are amazing! The settings were all pretty much maxed out and it runs great. I felt the back of the iMac afterwards and it was only warm, and silent.

What wasn't maxed out? Did you run it on native resolution?

Can't remember all the settings, but I noticed AA was off. I just used what the game chose for me. Yes, it was in native resolution and looks fantastic. Didn't get into any fire fights yet, so I'll see later if there are any intolerable slow downs.

Could you please tell exact fps numbers (exposed by cmd+r) for d3, in town as well as with lots of action going on? Did you also launch it under the OS X?

I will check right now, I have only tested the game in OSX so far.

Edit: The FPS counter is constantly flickering, so it was hard to make out the numbers. In the town I got around 60 I would say, and in the dungeon 90-100, 70-80 with a lot of action going on. Is there a way I can get more exact results? Should I change anything in the settings (I just put both FPS sliders on max). And again, tested with maximum settings in native resolution in OSX.

The 680MX isn't mentioned under supported cards, so I would assume it's still in beta.

Still it's an unified driver so if it is supported by the 680M and 675MX, it will also for the 680MX.

Barefeats, can you do some benchs with this new driver and see if there is some improvemenst?

I guess there's no way to get more exact numbers. But WOW, those fps are really amazing for OS X version and the fully cranked up settings! Those numbers actually mean that there's an ability to use vsync=on and have constant 60fps. Absolutely incredible!

Was you running Far Cry 3 on DirectX9 or DirectX11?

If it auto detected it was probably dx11.... But it would be good to have confirmation. Lastly, keep in mind we still don't have post beta drivers. So what we see now will possibly still improve.

New Nvidia driver available 310.70 WHQL available at http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/54629

I installed them and it works. :)

•Performance Boost – Increases performance for GeForce 400/500/600 Series GPUs in several PC games vs. GeForce 306.97 WHQL drivers. Results will vary depending on your GPU and system configuration:
GeForce GTX 680:
◦Up to 38% in Far Cry 3
◦Up to 26% in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
◦Up to 16% in Battlefield 3
◦Up to 18% in Assassin's Creed III
◦Up to 9% in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
◦Up to 6% in Medal of Honor: Warfighter
◦Up to 6% in StarCraft II
◦Up to 6% in Dragon Age II
◦Up to 6% in Batman: Arkham City
◦Up to 5% in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat

After this update i can now play far cry 3 at 1440p at ultra with no AA :D
Thanks

So...for those of us who are only occasional gamers, is there any reason besides gaming to go with the 680 over the 675? I'm about to put that 27" iMac in my cart, but am waffling on the graphics upgrade.

Reading what I am here, I'm highly tempted to play more games :)

I think as a future proof investment it would be wise to add the additional GPU power even if you don't think you will be gaming now. That's what I thought when I got my 2008 iMac, and man did I regret not upgrading the GPU. I'm getting the 680MX this time though!

I just played it with the same default settings in native resolution, it is dx11. Game looks really great and runs very smooth!

Not the most demanding game, but I threw Diablo 3 at the iMac with best settings in 1440p, as expected, no problems ; ) Can't wait to check out Far Cry 3 once I have Windows up and running.

I was just playing Diablo 3 on my 27" w/680mx earlier this evening. Playing full screen. Didn't write down the resolution but it was 2200 something x something. (Sorry, at work now). Settings are all on high. It runs great.

I don't do bootcamp. May check out some other games running native this week.

Any chance you could test Arma 2 or Planetside 2 as well? :p Planetside 2 is free on steam and is supposed to be a really demanding game, so a test would really show how well it can do.

so you can have long gaming session without using smcfancontrol or similar to speed up fan and keep mac cold?

Fan noise?

Today, I played for the first time through bootcamp to Battlefield 3 and Alan Wake (both at maximum settings with AA and VSYNC and the last driver 310.70 WHQL, native resolution). They run perfectly, no slowdown whatsoever! :)

However, after a few minutes of playing, the fan started to kick in and boy it's loud compare to my iMac 27" late 2009 (with ATI 4850)! Does anyone experienced that also?

I will be playing with OCing tomorrow evening. See how far I can push the clocks/see what temperature I get to. I know whoever is Karamazovmm at NBR will appreciate this ;)

I've been away from PC gaming so long, I don't even know what Arma is : ) But yeah, I will check out Planetside 2 and let you know!

Hi barefeats, I posted a similar question on another thread (Lightroom 4) but perhaps this was the more relevant thread.

I currently run Adobe Lightroom 4 and Premiere/Photoshop/After Effects CS6 on a 64bit Windows 7 PC that has 16GB RAM, 3.4GHz overclocked first generation i7, a slightly overclocked 580GTX with OS and apps running off of an SSD.

My plan was to get a 27 iMac with 24GB or 32GB RAM (Crucial), 3.4 i7, 680MX and 3TB Fusion drive and move away from my older Windows PC. I am therefore trying to decide if I should use OSX for my Adobe applications or if I should use Bootcamp and Windows 7/8. Do you think Windows or OSX would be more optimised with the Adobe Mercury engine and have you tested the difference between CUDA and OpenCL acceleration?

Also from the quote below, I found some text on the Adobe web site that indicated the following 4 options are GPU accelerated on CUDA but not on OpenCL (although this could be out of date): Basic 3D, Gaussian Blur, Fast Blur, and Directional Blur

Barefeats - are you sure CUDA is enabled with Adobe suite? May have to force that on. Also can you include 2011 high end iMac for comparing? That's what I'm upgrading from purely for video production work.

Thanks to you and everyone for the tests! Mine comes Wed.

Mine arrived yesterday. Specs are

i7
680MX
32 GB  RAM
3TB Fusion

Do you want me to benchmark it? What free program should I use?

So far I've been able to run The Sims 3 with a variety of expansion packs at full graphics - no lag at all! And I've been running FCP X which is insanely fast!
