Thanks Mac32.

Unrelated question. I'm having a hard time finding a good mouse for gaming, one that works with Mac as well as Windows. On the mac side I'm using Steer Mouse to fine tune the controls but I cant find anything on the PC side that works as well. Any suggestions for a mouse and/or software that allows fine tuning of the acceleration, tracking speed and sensitivity?

Thanks

All recent Razer mice have excellent Mac & PC drivers, and use a cloud service to sync the settings between them. Personally I use the Taipan.

As already mentioned, Razer mice are quite popular. I have a Razer DeathAdder and it's been great for gaming on my iMac.

Sure thing. :) I'm a big fan of Logitech g400 (previously mx518), now there's a slightly new version g400s. You really can't go wrong with that mouse, very nice shape, right size and weight, buttons have the right amount of resistance. Also, just download Logitech's mouse control software, you can fine tune everything there.

Thanks guys.

Every one of the mice mentioned in this thread, and other threads related to this subject, have a fair number of customer complaints that concern me.

The g400, a lot of people complain that slightly wiggling the cord causes disconnect issues. The G700 complaints are about the short charge life of the rechargeable batteries, some say as little as 40 minutes before needing to recharge. The Death Adder complaints are about the software, having to be online to run the personal setting on your mouse and how the software window launches every time you start your computer. That seems like a pain. The sensei series problems are the coating on the mouse and the buttons on the right side of the mouse.

Mac 32:
I guess the biggest concern for me is micro controlling the cursor acceleration and sensitivity, I cant seem to get it just right. My old mouse was perfect, an older microsoft mouse. So the new Logitech gaming software allows you to do this?
Thanks

The mx518/g400 has always worked great for me, no issues here. It has a very functional and practical design (unlike many of the other gaming mouse brands/models). The Logitech gaming software is for controlling acceleration and sensitivity, among several other things (assigning functions/keys to the various mouse buttons etc). You can also change between different sensitivity settings when gaming (for sniping vs. regular shooting etc.). Try turning off mouse acceleration in most games (ie. shooters) though, it makes the mouse more precise...

the silicon itself? sure. but I really doubt that other iMac's internals will handle these temps well in long terms.

yeah it seems like dust will be a real enemy if those are normal preasured temps.

haven benchmarks are one thing, but if your export a video file for 12 hours or playing a gaming marathon, things might not be so good for the computer!

Honestly the Razer complaints are all from people with some sort of religious aversion to cloud services, without any realistic temperament to their comments.
- If you let the service save your credentials (like any other website that you'd save a cookie), you'll never see the software window unless you ask for it. You get a tiny icon on the top right of the menu bar in OS X and the bottom right of the task bar in Windows.
- Ask yourself:
1) How often do you change your mouse settings after initial setup?
2) How often is your computer not connected to the Internet?
3) How often do you game in one OS, then reboot and immediately play in the other?
The intersection of those times is how often Razer's cloud service is likely to cause a problem (meaning, the adjusted settings from one OS aren't immediately available in the other OS).

What is the latest drivers I should be using for the GPU in Windows?

Should I stick with the ones from the BootCamp installer or is there newer ones out there?

No, you should get the latest ones. I think they're 314.22.

I've also updated to the latest driver and all works fine, it's been about 2 weeks

I've been enjoying my gtx680mx, but have found planetside is crazy demanding of the gpu. Even in bioshock infinite, with a slight overclock using msi afterburner (+250, +350) I'm getting a pretty solid 60fps average. Anyone else playing Planetside 2 on their iMac that's found optimal settings (with or without overclocking) at native resolution?

Planetside 2. Fraps to benchmark. Native resolution, All setting on high, Average FPS was 37.7, highest was 63fps. All settings on medium: average fps was 63 and the max fps was 99.

To me, Planetside 2 is very playable at high settings with an average FPS of 37, I didn't feel hindered by the 37 frame rate at all. I've put in around 12 hours and I play with everything on high. As far as FPS are concerned, to me it's not a big difference between playing the game with setting on high VS medium. Now, other games are terrible if the frame rates drop below 60, Black Ops is one I found to be that way.

However, if you're determined to get an average FPS of 60, then play the game on medium settings, the game looks great on medium quality.

I've had the G400 for about two and a half years and it's never come unplugged with me. I'm not one to wiggle my cords or constantly plug/unplug things into the back of my computer, but it's been a great mouse so far. I'm not sure if ill get another one when I get ready to replace it, but that's only because it doesn't come in white, and I want something that goes with my iMac better...

Planetside is very heavy on the GPU, yes - I have it at native resolution, all settings high and GPU physics on and I get between 32-50 fps depending on where I am, but in large fights I am CPU bound, not GPU bound. In heavy fights I'm pulled down to 22-30 fps but CPU limited (I have the i5).

All in all I've been very impressed with the 680MX in a range of games I've tried it in.

I actually bought both, the G400 and the Death Adder, trying to determine which I like better. They both have their pros and cons, and each one seems to work better for certain games. I like the shape of the G400 a little better but I like the software for the Death Adder better. Been going back and forth between the two for a few days now, cant decide.

Anyone try the Perixx MX-2000? It's supposed to be better than some high-end mice according to the reviews... I might give it a try.

Sam. I'm sorry but in no way, shape or form do I believe you're getting 60fps in Sim City with everything maxed out at 2560x1440. Heck, I just start the tutorial at 2560x1440 with everything maxed, and FRAPS says I'm getting around 40fps.

So I'd love you to make a video showing your settings, running FRAPS, and your getting 60fps solid. I just don't believe it! Please prove me wrong. It would be awesome to see 60fps.

I still maintain it's best to limit the game to 30fps, since it runs beautifully maxed out at 30fps, and is much more stable this way (in terms of fps fluctuation).

Sorry, I've been away and busy with exams, will do that as soon as I'm done.

----------

bioshock infinite @ 2560 x 1440, direct x 11, all maxed out on ultra, aa, vsync

my system:
i7, geforce gtx 680mx, 8 gb, 768 ssd
gpu@ +280/+500, cpu@3,9 ghz, automatic fan speed

average: 30 fps up to 60
sometimes drop to 20. but overall it's nearly perfect playable for me
the new imac is pretty amazing :D

temperatures after 1 hour:

average:
cpu all cores:78-84
memory: 57
ssd: 38
mainboard 50
gpu: 82
fan: 1650

max:
cpu: 94
memory: 60
ssd: 40
gpu: 89
fan: 2642

edit:
yesterday i played for 2-3 hours and get two reboots :(

Yup, that's what happens when you don't control your fan :D, always put it on 3000+ when you are gaming with that amount of stress

There's no need to run the fan at 3000rpm+, unless you live in Africa or something. :) Start downclocking the gpu ram, it makes little sense running it at +500. Go down to about +420 or something.
Some games maxed out in 1440p will even give GTX Titan problems, not to mention the 680MX. AA, shaders and shadows at max settings in modern games demand a crazy amount of GPU power, and you're basically throwing a whole bunch of fps away for hardly any visual difference most of the time.
Btw., I got a higher stable overclock when I disabled CPU turbo boost.

Regarding Lubbos fan control, the second I started the program the fans went crazy, took me a second or two to realize the default settings are 6000 rpm. So once I turned the fans down, the fan(s) stayed on, it doesn't seem to go back to the system determining if the fan needs to be on or not, and it doesn't always need to be on if your just in the finder or cruising the web. There is no way to turn off or disable Lubbos without restarting the computer.

Second, there a few different setting for different macbooks, not sure which one would be the iMac equivalent. does the imac have one or two fans?, I'm assuming one. Third, even though I selected the max fan speed to be 2400, when i jumped out of a game to look at Lubbos, Lubbos was saying the fan speed was 2600. Also, what should the minimum fan speed be set to? Finally, following your directions for afterburner, lubbos, and disabling turbo boost, playing Planetside 2 (all high setting) the temp still spiked to 90 degrees. Fraps gave it a slight increase in FPS while overclocking, but not much (if any)

Not sure why I'm getting such high temps. playing Planetside 2 on medium setting kept the temp at 85 and gave me the best fps. Afterburner didn't make much, if any difference.

Hi dogbone,
Yes Lubbos isn't ment for the iMac, but it works anyway. Choose the 1 fan configuration, there's only one fan in your iMac. :) Set minimum and max speed to the same setting, but don't go above 2600rpm (that's Apple's speed limit). Use MSI Afterburner OSD to monitor gpu temp and framerate during gaming, that's a good way to find the right fan speed. Turn down fan speed to 1200rpm after you're done.

I notice a big difference when overclocking at +285/+425. Are you sure you got the settings right? :p You can underclock the 680MX with Afterburner, but my point was when the GPU core is overclocked at +280, then ram speed +425 vs. +500 only gets 680MX noticeably hotter, with hardly any real performance gains (from my benchmark tests).

Do you have an SSD or a HD/Fusion drive? That could affect the internal temp. Ambient temperature obviously matters too. An occasional spike at 85C isn't that bad, but if the temp is that high consistently, I would watch the CPU and HD temps also. 85C is probably fine, but I tend to be extra careful with closed systems like the iMac, and try keep the general GPU temp around 80-83C max, CPU temp is always a few C lower than GPU after I disabled turbo boost.

thanks. yea, I know what you mean regarding actually activating Afterburner, funny because i kind of figured you might ask me that, but i did hit the "apply" button. I do have the fusion drive. Playing Black Ops, the game stays in the 75 degree range. But the two big sandbox games I play, DayZ and Plantetside 2, the system heats up pretty high, pretty fast. I'm going to play around with AA and shadows as you suggested to see what i can do. I did have the nVidia vertical sync and triple buffering on, wonder if that made any difference.

So with Lubbos, do you just have your fans running at 2400rpm all the time? because even while just internet surfing the fans were running. I couldn't turn lubbos off, couldn't delete Lubbos, when I tried to delete a dialog box said it was in use even though i had closed the window. Once i restarted the computer then the fans went back to normal and I was allowed to delete the program. I'll try it again.

Thanks.
