8 is a lucky number in China. They need to penetrate the Chinese market much better than they have.

Based on that argument: if the 8 was released in 2018, would that make it less or more lucky? So is it more likely they'd release next year or the following year to grab the Chinese market?

IMO, we may continue to see evolutionary, rather than revolutionary design of the iPhone. If you look at the entire line, from first generation to current generation, it's pretty much been an evolution of exterior design. No mater which generation you see, there's no mistaking it for an iPhone.

I think it's similar to the Porsche design language. No matter the model year, it looks like a 911.

Just speculating here, but I feel the revolution will be with internal hardware and software.

Is that just based on next year? Or 2018/19 as well?

I'm just speculating based on past releases by Apple over the years. That's why I'm thinking the exterior design will continue to be an evolution of the iPhone design language for the foreseeable future. Personally, I'd like to see the bezels get a little smaller and I think that will happen. In the current design, the bezels are much more noticeable in white than black. (At least to my eyes.)

Just to clarify -- I have no doubt Apple will eventually release a phone with an edge-to-edge display and home button built-into the display. The home button redesign in the 7 is a stepping stone in this. It's a logical eventuality.

I just don't think it'll be next year (7S), but 2018 instead.

That could be.

Only reason why 2017 phone might be glass is to allow wireless charging.

I don't think it will be a whole new design. I do think the bezels will shrink some. I see a OLED screen and wireless charging. And I also see a much improved software as well. Maybe a much more open software. I don't see them changing the home button again or else they wasted money in research for this model IMO. I also foresee more camera upgrades as always.

Nah the home button is new this year, they won't remove it next year and they mentioned how it was on the MacBooks and now on the iPhone so it will come back again; maybe they release a separate special phone for the occasion but I doubt it, in the end theres going to be another phone after that one its not going to be the last so I don't see any reason to make a big deal out of it.

All the mockups look really great but think about it and hold that phone in your mind, its not very practical lol on top of that I still don't see any benefit of a screen edge to edge or a screen that wraps around the bezels/edges but I do know they cost a **** ton to replace and if you drop it its game over most of the times.

think of all the incremental steps between the iPhone 7 and rumoured 8. The current board is far too profit driven to forego those. Apparently a colour, jet black, is now a new feature of a phone.. that's where we are with Tim. I hope I'm wrong but it's a 7s for me

Am I the only person who buys a device for what it does and not what it looks like? I honestly couldn't care less if we don't get a form factor redesign for years, as long as the new features and hardware improvements are worth the upgrade that's all I care about.

People insisting there will be a 7s because the home button is new this year are forgetting the rumors are indicating that the 2017 iPhone with an edge-to-edge screen and a virtual home button would be debuted alongside an updated 7s and 7s Plus.

I think we will see a 7s along with a completely redesigned "pro" phone that will cost much more.

I would like smaller bezels for a larger display within the same or smaller frame. That's a matter of functionality for me, not looks.

It wouldn't bother me one bit...I've really never understood why they redesigned every two years.

Correction: I know why...just never mattered to me.

That's understandable and a very common point made on here.
For someone with big hands who has no problem operating the Plus one handed I really don't have a problem with the bezels, I actually like how they look.
I use my Plus in landscape a lot of the time so the bezels actually serve a purpose as I like that I can hold the phone comfortably without having my fingers cover the screen.
I certainly won't complain if/when they eventually make the bezels smaller but I'm not in any hurry to see it done.

based on the history of iphone 4 and 6 and based on apple conservative approach, next year iphone 8 will have
1) body redesign
2) OLED screen
3) maybe no home button

apple usually doesn't take a lot of risk and change everything. so most of internal parts should stay the same or incremental change (CPU). remember next year is not the last time new iphone is released. they don't want to throw out everything they have in the pipeline. plus considering the cost, they only change enough to keep the same price points.

like iphone 4s, 5s, and 6s, iphone 8s in 2018 will prove iphone 8 if there are any issues with iphone 8 due to changes.

They didn't repeat history with the iPhone 7, which has the same form factor as 6/6+ series.
They wanted to do the redesign this year, but the screen and wireless charging system weren't ready for the action.

There are no credible rumors about this whatsoever. The Jet Black finish on the iPhone 7 is what materialized out of the "all glass" iPhone rumors. Many fail to realize that.

Also, nothing Apple has done indicates they have any interest in 1) a so-called edge-to-edge display, 2) ditching the home button.

It is funny the way people will interpret things any way they want to. They will use available information to fuel their preconceived notions.

Like this:

...that is one way to interpret the move to a solid state home button. Another way (the correct way that is not fueled by rumor) is to say: Apple just made the first major redesign to the Home Button in 10 editions of iPhone. They didn't do that this year just to completely ditch it next year. Apple doesn't waste R&D effort like that.

There is no good reason to believe that the 11th generation iPhone is anything other than the iPhone 7s.

That said...I do think next year will be a complete redesign :)

Both iPhones released in 2016 (iPhone SE and iPhone 7) are 3rd iteration/evolutions of core designs. They are fantastic phones, largely because Apple has had years to spend redesigning and perfecting these core designs. Look at iPhone 5 compared to iPhone SE. Look at iPhone 6 compared to 7. They achieved a lot over the years. But eventually, their own core design will become a limiting factor when they want to push forward with new ideas.

I think we'll see a new core design in 2017, that spans 4", 4.7" and 5.5" models (or maybe different sizes altogether). And I think that new core design will lead them forward through at least 3 iterations.

Well your pulled out of the air theories don't mean anything. Most likely Jet Black is what was mistaken for the all glass iPhone that was whispered to be in the works.
Apple pretty much said earlier in the year that the 2017 model will get a complete redesign and that the reason is the changes weren't ready for this year.
