Got mine last week. Installed yesterday, early 2011 MBP 13 on Catalina, interesting bug is happening. When the module is connected, the system goes nuts, all fans high speed, system throttles itself like overheating (kernel_task to 96% cpu) become unusable. Tried reset smc and pram, no dice. Disconnect module, it works fine, reconnect bugs again. Anyone else experience this? Is it a kext conflict, maybe bad solder?

Did you boot into safe mode? We wouldn't have shipped it untested with bad solder.

There's an interesting post on StackExchange that mentions a Catalina Wi-Fi driver bug and a fix: https://apple.stackexchange.com/a/375600

I received it today. I installed it and when I try to add my watch to Unlock the MBP, I get this error:

Did you check this footnote at the bottom of instructions:

If you have issues using the Apple Watch unlock or Handoff features, make sure that ‘Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices’ is checked in System Preferences > General. Additionally, please sign out of iCloud and then sign back in.

I purchased one of these for my 13" MBP but my machine was too old to utilize it—if you search on eBay you'll find it.

I tried that and it didn't work.

15" 2010 MBP on Catalina 10.15.7.

Is WiFi and bluetooth working? If so, it would be a Catalina issue. There's also a few more things you can try, such as restarting the Apple watch, and disabling and renabling Handoff on your iPhone.

All of the issues being reported seem to be Catalina only.

Also seems to be you're running Catalina on an unsupported mac if yours is 2010.

@highvoltage12v @troop231 I have installed the new wifi card and I got it to only work if I used the text utility tool to add the 2 additional kext files, but as soon as I reset the smc and nvram, I lose wifi and only bt works. I can't get the iwatch to unlock mac at all.

2012 MBP 15 2.7ghz on 10.15.7

Its not gonna work without some fixes, that´s for sure.
Spoke with @highvoltage12v offline. The issues seem to only crop up if you're installing the card on a machine that has Catalina already on it. Never has been issues coming from any other macOS version, as our test machines are running Catalina, but the difference is the original upgrades on our test machines were performed prior to Catalina.

That is the working theory, the other theory is that you need to run a combo updater.

Not at all, my friend. I have two of your cards in two Macbook Pro 17" 2011, I can unlock them with Apple Watch. Simply, you need to fix some things, as these machines were not designed to work with "unlock with apple watch".

You don't seem to understand what I'm talking about, there's nothing wrong with the cards.

That´s what I´m saying!!! The fixes are just software!

When you quoted my post it made it sound like I had something to fix. @qu35tion is going to be testing a theory hopefully later this evening or tomorrow by doing a clean Mojave install on another volume.

Not at all! i´m so happy with them, as you can read in my previoses posts. So sorry if you understood that.

Old mac´s just are not listed in the /System/Library/Frameworks/IOBluetooth.framework/Versions/A/Resources/SystemParameters.plist

to work.

You need to fix that to have "unlock by Apple Watch"

Just a reminder for anyone here using these cards with Catalina, do not allow the post installer to install any Legacy wifi kexts. You're hurting your chances of these cards working properly.

Also please do your due diligence and test these cards in a native OS like High Sierra, remember these cards came out in 2015-2017 and work just fine in High Sierra.

In addition to what @highvoltage12v said above, we just ordered yet another testing machine from Swappa that has Catalina already installed on it to see if we can sort out these OS specific issues.

Please bare with us :)

Working like a charm in Catalina.

Just installed the card that arrived here yesterday in my Mid 2012 15" MacBook Pro, which is running 10.15.7. Was pretty curious what would happen, but after installing the unit, it just worked on the first boot.

WiFi connected to my home network instantly. Bluetooth was toggling between unavailable and idle a few times. Removing my mouse and keyboard and pairing them again made those work fine though.

The issues do not seem to be as simple as just having Catalina already installed. If there is anything I can check to help resolve it, please let me know!

Lastly, thank you @troop231 for the great work. The ultra fast shipping to Western Europe was a charm :)

Ok. I did following:
1. Installed a hard drive that has high sierra
2. Reset pram and smc
3. Restarted the computer and watch a few times.

Same thing. Wifi works, airdrop works but connecting my watch doesn't work.

So, let me ask this... Did I re-connect the wires correclty?

Wire order doesn’t matter technically speaking.

Even if the hard drive had High Sierra on it, it really needs to be a clean install with the original card in, and then insert the new card.

Never seen these issues before; without having your machine in front of me it’s hard to diagnose. Most likely Catalina wrote something to the EFI firmware on the machine, and one of the Catalina patchers caused some issues as @highvoltage12v said. Since that OS isn’t supported on a 2010 by Apple or us.

Ordered last Thursday, got it Saturday. Installed in 2012 MacBook 15 A1286 with Catalina 10.15.7, cleared SMC and PRAM, restarted and it worked first time perfectly. Thanks for making an old MacBook a little speedier.

OK. I'm gonna try a clean install with the original card now.

Worst case scenario we can have you return it and we can try to buy/borrow someone's 2010 MBP machine. If yours isn't your main machine, I'm sure we could arrange something.
