I assumed that if it already listed n as there that it would working without the $1.99 thing from apple?? Is that not the case? Is there a reason why they make the computers capable, but need the activation? It's not like they're making much money off of it. I don't have an n router right now so if I do need to activate it I won't do it until I do.

That activation download is designed for the last revision of MBs and MBPs, which although capable of handling 802.11n (or rather the draft version Apple is using), this functionality was disabled by default - installing this software will re-activate it. The new models have 802.11 a/b/g/n active as standard

I think Apple's online store makes it clear what machines that download is for - but to be honest, it's a while since I last looked.

The only things you'll find are different are:

1. Your wifi will connect faster to the base station than other routers.
2. Networking between N-enabled computers is faster.
3. Your range will improve.
4. It looks really sweet sitting in a room!

Things that you won't notice or aren't good.

1. The usb HD option is crap, it doesn't work fast enough. If you are plugging in a printer that is fine but you can only print, no scanning or anything.
2. You won't notice your internet go any faster. G-wireless is still faster than your internet so don't think you are going any faster.

Not necessary if you buy the AEX N base station.

oh really!!?!? didnt kno that one.

just a question. when the full verision of draft N comes out....the now 'draft N' computers will be able to have a firmware upgrade to the new "full N" so that they can be improved in quality? or i need a completely seperate and newer card?

Also if the Extreme is set to broadcast at 802.11n only at 5Ghz you will get up to 300Mbps and up to 300 feet of range. The Extreme has MiMo making this possible.
Unfortunately, this feature isn't very flexible. As I discovered after getting a second AEX N, you can't operate with WDS in the 5GHz mode. It only works in 2.4GHz mode (130 Mb). Bummer.

oh really!!?!? didnt kno that one.
Apple even states that on the enabler order page:

Important note: The Enabler is included free with the new AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n. If you purchase a new AirPort Extreme Base Station, you do not need to purchase the Enabler separately.

lol, exactly, I have a mac and I dont have $2 to spare. ive not dl it myself but i was making others aware for reference.
TBH i think its a cheek to charge ANY amount for such an upgrade of feature
I agree it's ethically questionable for Apple to charge for this. I think it's morally more questionable to steal it in spite of that. We scream about DRM and anti-piracy practices by the industry, and then turn around and give them more reason to continue along their draconian paths.

Give it some thought.

put it like this, I would not have bought the program anyway, so if I were to dl it, Apple are not losing out on money. The same way if someone donated this program to me, I wouldnt chose to then go and give Apple $2 for losing out on the sale.
Im not condoning software piracy as im a developer myself, and money is made from selling software.
anyway back on topic...

so i have a
MBP 2.16 duo
2 gig RAM
17 inch
(802.11g)3

and this update could not be installed in my comp

why >?
RTFM!

From the Apple enabler ordering page.
These Macs have the 802.11n hardware built-in:

MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo
MacBook with Intel Core 2 Duo
Mac Pro with AirPort Extreme option
iMac with Intel Core 2 Duo (except the 17-inch, 1.83GHz iMac)
Please make sure you have one of these Mac computers before purchasing the 802.11n Enabler software. It is not compatible with other Mac models.

It's an enabler for wireless N cards. You don't have one.

No, you are condoning piracy by rationalizing it into something that's OK to do. And you are dead wrong to do it. Do you really, truly believe what you just said? Amazing...it just boggles the mind.

It's thinking like yours that resulted in us having things like the DMCA. And it's thinking like yours that will cause those draconian measures to continue unchecked.

it amazes me you are so shocked by the act of piracy, did you never record a song off the radio? did you never copy a cassette tape, record a film on to VHS, burn a cd off for a friend... i could go on, all copyrighted material. it happens whether you or I like it or not.

I am talking hypothetically, im not saying I have downloaded that program.

yea thanks, but i have a "MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo"

thats all the page says, its says nothing of versions or release models, so pardon the arrogance if they are not specific enough to tell the common user or buyer what to look for EXACTLEY

your specs above said Duo, not 2 Duo, two different machines. the original Core Duo models don't have 'n' capable cards in them.

If it's important to you, you can put in a wireless n card into your macbook pro.

I have it and its great!
