That is only necessary for the first Mac laptops that came out with secret 802.11n support. The newer ones come with 802.11n already active. I suspect that since it says 802.11 a/b/g/n that it is already activated.
 
The only things you'll find are different are:

1. Your wifi will connect faster to the base station than other routers.
2. Networking between N-enabled computers is faster.
3. Your range will improve.
4. It looks really sweet sitting in a room!

Things that you won't notice or aren't good.

1. The usb HD option is crap, it doesn't work fast enough. If you are plugging in a printer that is fine but you can only print, no scanning or anything.
2. You won't notice your internet go any faster. G-wireless is still faster than your internet so don't think you are going any faster.

I have an almost month old MBP so I believe I have n already enabled. Is it really no faster? I thought g was faster than b, so why is n not faster than g? I realize g still can't transmit the speed as it comes in from cable or DSL, but I'd expect n be at least able to use more of the speed of the cable coming in??

Also, is your comment about a printer not being able to scan regarding the apple airport extreme, all n routers, or all routers?? Because I have an all in one I'm planning to connect to a router I purchase in September - is there any router out there I can get that will allow me to scan with it? What about using the digital camera memory card slots in it?
 
I agree it's ethically questionable for Apple to charge for this. I think it's morally more questionable to steal it in spite of that. We scream about DRM and anti-piracy practices by the industry, and then turn around and give them more reason to continue along their draconian paths.

Give it some thought.

I read something about that a while back. I'll admit I'm not knowledgeable about the legalities of it, but I didn't buy it then, and surely Apple could have found a way to get around that silliness.

It's not that big a deal to me though.

I don't see how Apple could have gotten around it just because they are Apple. The bottom line is that they had to charge for it because of some Act that was put in place because of the whole Enron deal. It has to do with how the accounting is done with reporting revenue for a product. I think Apple did a stand up job. That is the whole reason that Apple is reporting revenue from the Apple TV and the iPhone over a two year period, so they can give away any new functionality without having to charge US for it (like they had to with the 802.11n deal).
 
If it says N in the network utility, it is already enabled on that apple computer. So no need for the enabler. I do have a second revision of MBP, but I installed the N card (Mac Pro Wireless Extreme), so that is an option also, if the OP would like to do that.

The heck are you talking about? G is faster (theoretically) than your ISP line coming into your router (for most end users). N would be faster to. But as said in previous posts by other posters, G/N is not going to speed up your net connection, but will increase the transfers of files, streaming etc. WITHIN the LAN.

I get WAY faster internet by plugging in directly to my cable internet than by using a router. Plus, this has been confirmed to me by a professional. While the router says it's whatever speed it claims, that number doesn't really mean anything, it's not as fast as it says. The internet coming into my home is a LOT faster than that coming into my comp from the router. I don't know why you say "theoretically" and "for most end users," are you going to say that I'm the exception? I've heard this more than once, so I don't understand how this is incorrect.

of course its gonna be slower if you have a router, and then wireless. the amouts of extra packets being sent to check for errors would crazily make those times massiver. direct connect is way faster.

only in regards to your internet connection. if your G router can already handle your current internet speeds then you wont notice any increase in that respect. copying files and streaming via :apple:tv etcetc will be way faster tho.

haha this is a tricky one. that comment only remains true if your internet connection is less that 54mbps (3.5megabytes per second). so that statement that your wireless router can keep up to 100% speed on a G router is still correct. even on ADSL2+ your G router will still be plenty fast.

i wasnt really talking about that neway, i was saying that having a wireless router would be slower than direct connection straight from the modem. but ignore that part polycat, ur answer is in the above paragraph. hahahaha.

I'm using the dell cards which are pretty much the same ones as the apple branded mac pros. Got them on ebay for $35 each. No problems what so ever. If anything, it feels like the reception is better with these cards than the original g ones I had.

Thanks. Looks like my choices are limited, and Wireless N ExpressCard are running about $100 (Belkin, D-Link) everywhere I've looked so far. It doesn't look like Dell has miniPCI Wireless N cards for for my Dell laptop.

Okay, I see, so we were talking about different things. I understand that a direct connection is faster than the speed through the router for more internet connections. I'll be getting Cable internet and I was told that no routers can transmit the full speed of the cable coming in. So that's why I wonder why N isn't faster in terms of actual internet connection speeds? If G can't trasnmit the full speed of the incoming internet signal, and N is an upgrade, why can't N transmit more of the speed? Is it just not possible to get any faster internet connection through wireless? Have we hit a glass ceiling in terms of wireless, at least for now?

If I have an all-in-one printer which I REALLY want to connect to my router to print with wirelessly, can I use the scanner portion? What about the ports for memory cards? 1. hhmmm ok. im not sure how fast your cable internet speeds are over in america, and im not sure what they are here in aust either. but the currecnt ADSL2+ works at around 20-24mbps right? and the airport and other G routers work at 54mbps. so that means that at the faster ADSL2+ theoretical speeds that isnt even half the capacity that your wireless G router will be using. therefore upgrading to a N router wont really change your speeds.
UNLESS your internet conenction speed is greater than 54mbps. then upgrading to N will prove faster.

2. i have an all in one printer, my scanner never worked regardless of whether it was connected via USB or wireless. so cant help you. i assume that as long as ur scanner supports TWIAN then "Image capture" (in Applications) will be able to find it on the network somewhere.

So yeah, if you work out the numbers according to what the routers claim, then it looks like the router is faster than the internet connection. However, that's not the speed the router actually gets so in reality it's not true. The router gets only teeny fractions of what they claim. I can illustrate this by telling you that my router claims 108Mbps!! Twice as much as you say G routers operate at. I'm told that it probably operates at just a few Mbps, way lower than the speed of the internet coming in.

So far it seems like no one agrees with this statement though so I may have to go back to the store where I was told about the false advertising and ask about the N routers to see if they claim the N will give you faster internet. Has anyone here actually clocked their router at 54Mbps or anything even close to that?

are you joking ?? you obvioulsy have never hooked an external hardrive to a router, and transferred large files from you laptop, through the air, to the little router, and into the external hardrive. FAST !!

like 250 MPS and up ! your internet lets use comcast for instance, sends internet at speeds up to 6 Mps, only 6 compared to 300 that you can send from laptop to hardrive.

I OBVIOUSLY haven't done what you said. But what does that matter? If I don't intend to use my router to transfer files to an external hard drive, then why do I care about that? 250Mbps? Holy crap... I don't care. I'm talking about internet here, and I can't seem to get two people to agree on one answer.

You're trying to compare 6Mbps for internet to 300 for laptop to hard drive. You cannot compare those like that because they are completely different things. One connects you to the internet. The other connects you to an external storage device.

So, for INTERNET purposes only, can anyone tell me some reliable information?
