I bought my 8800 on eBay for less then $80 complete with box and all accessories.

I never understood why people worry so much about buying on eBay. If a seller has had his account for a while and has high positive feedback I don't see why anyone wouldn't want to buy from him/her. Additionally in case something goes wrong you can always dispute the charges if you paid with your credit card.

I really don't see what the big deal is. If I was you I would stick to eBay there are a few 512-P3-N801-AR on there right now.

Guess you were never burned with ebay. :)

In any rate, the reason why I was afraid was because the one that I was looking at didn't have -AR at the end. If N801 works, then I will just go with that..

Same issue.

There are dozens of N801, but with no -AR. Most of htem N801-RX.

Does this work also?

-RX means they are refurbished I believe. I just bought one straight from evga via ebay. I am 100% sure it is the same card I currently have that ends in -AR that is crashing for whatever reason, I beleive bad VRAM. This is going to be my replacement.

Would another option be to by a evga 9800GT and flash it with the apple 8800GT ram? They can still be had new and I believe they will flash just fine. This was my second option. My 3rd was to go with the 3870 MAC/PC version and then add a 2nd 3870 PC version to crossfire with. Just couldn't justify the cost knowing that early next year I think we will see more video card options.

Anyone from the UK on here bought a power cable from SVIDEO? Theres 2 postage options, $3 or $12 but no idea how long the cheaper one (US First Class Mail) takes. Tried emailing them but no response :(

Hmmm, I had no problem finding -AR cards on eBay last night and two of them sold today :

http://cgi.ebay.com/GeForce-8800GT-512MB-PCI-E-EVGA-Video-Card_W0QQitemZ110315225840QQ
Both cards from the same seller with a 100% positive feedback since 2000.

I can see 4 active auctions for 801-AR on eBay right now. There is one buy it now offer for $119.99 with five New cards available so you could get one of those for $119.99 sans 25% live.com discount which should net around $105 after shipping. Cable
Another option is to make your own cable. I made one for my flashed x1900 and another for the 8800 the total cost for both was around $5 since when I was making the one for x1900 I bought twice as much components as I needed incase I messed up. Here are the instructions :

My 8800GT arrived today and flashed with out any problems. As listed else where in this thread I used nvflash -4 -5 -6 <romfilename> answered y to all the prompts. I used the nvflash 5.72 which I believe is the newest version.

I think it is safe to say we can add 512-P3-N801-A1 to the list of eVga part numbers that can be flashed. :)

another working card

Just wanted to add another working card to the list - the EVGA Akimbo version of the 8800GT. So far as I can tell, the model I got (512-P3-N807-RX) is just the stock EVGA 8800GT with the Akimbo cooler on it. I got a refurbished one from Newegg for $115, which isn't too bad considering the cooler goes for $40 on its own. You'll only get the card, so get this to power it:

http://www.svideo.com/x1900.html

It runs cool and quiet, but it's HUGE. It takes two slots and the bottom cooler spills into a third. If you don't have many (or any) cards installed, it'll fit fine.

I'm running SPORE at 1920x1200 now, so my son's happy :)

Just placed an order after your successful story. I hope this works out for me also.

What version of nvflash did you use? and did you use -4 -5 -6 as an option? Did you get any warning and etc?

I used version 5.72, available here:

http://www.mvktech.net/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,26/func,selectfolder/cat,42/page,3/

and used the -4 -5 -6 option (with --index=X, where X is the card index that nvflash --list reports). I got all the usual warnings - just say "yes" and the flash will complete fine.

I found out the hard way that the Mac Pro does not like to boot off USB devices. It's best to grab the full version of the FreeDOS ISO and boot off CD. I used rEFIt, but you can probably just hold "c" on boot. You'll need to access the files - I just created a small DOS partition on the HD and put them there. When I was done, I installed FreeDOS on the partition so I won't have to jump through these hoops again...

I'm not sure it's necessary, but before I flashed (but with the 8800GT installed along side the 7300GT) I booted into Bootcamp and installed the latest Forceware drivers:

Thanks.

I tried XFX one, and I also got loads of warnings which I prompted with "Yes". However, after the boot, I get series of warning noise, and no boot screen. I had to return it.

I hope this works out. I will keep this info and try it.

Thanks again.

BTW, isn't that link only works in Windows XP and etc? I believe that I tried that before and it says that I can't run it in MS-DOS mode or similar.

Correct, those at the Windows drivers. If you're not using Boot Camp, you don't need to bother with them.

Happy to announce it worked!

I am now using the 8800GT w/o the darn ATI 1900 as I type this.

Thanks.

sorry i'm late

please dont post it, do you really think they will backwards support if people do **** like this?

Dunno where you've been but pulling ROMS and flashing them into or onto cheaper cards has been going on for many, many years. It's never stopped Apple from releasing another GFX card. I guess you've never customised a G4 Cube before? Near enough everyone who's ever owned a PowerMac G4 Cube has been flashing and experimenting with cheap PC cards - it's normal.
