World of Warcraft...
WOW under OS X, I'd stick to what you've got.
If you needed a boost for Core Image, the 3870 might be a more interesting prospect.

Other than that, wait, and see what else comes out.
No, I'm quite happy with my Mac Pro. If I wanted to deal with crap and crashes all day, I would go back to a PC...
(OpenGL 2.1)
Meh. Computers (systems + software) are just tools. Nothing more. ;)

It's up to the individual to determine what best suits their needs, and choose. If there's problems, they have to go from there.

Personally, I like options, so only multiple OS's will do. :D :p

Hi!
Sorry for my English

1. After reading this forum, I realized that these cards have been successfully flash:

EVGA 8800GT 512 (all versions)
Leadtek Winfast PX8800 GT ZT
And perhaps PNY GF 8800 GT 512

Unfortunately, I can't find in Russia anyone of them: ((As currently popular 9 *** series, because the old cards (8800, etc.) aren't sold.
But the available for sale Gigabyte XFX ASUS ASUS MSI Palit and other.

What other cards of the old mac pro have been successfully flashed???

2. When I will flash 8800, have I to connect the old 7300 to the last slot? (To see what I am doing :) )
How does NVFlash determine what card reflash?

3. And another stuped question: Will the card work successfully in the Tiger?

Flashing 8800GT no Picture on Boot

First I want to say thanks for all of the great posts, I would be lost. After reading through a lot of previous posts, I was able to locate two EVGA e-GeForce 8800GT w512MB (P/N:512-P3-N802-AR)...I was able to successfully flash these using the flash within post#53, the cards boot and work fine in a Windows PC on a Intel based machine. When remove the factory 7300GT and I install one into my Mac Pro (MA356LL/A with 2 - Dual Core 2.66GHz Xeon, 8GB RAM, stock 7300GT w256MB) plug in the power cable to the back of the 8800GT, the Mac Pro boots but I have no picture at all. It appears to boot all the way into OSx 10.5.6, but no picture? I assume I have missed something, but I am not sure what...I reviewed the previous posts and unless I missed it, I didn't see anything I missed...I will continue to review unless I hear something...thanks again to everyone for the help.

So, if I find the correct card (i.e. one of the eVGA's listed in this thread), they work just as well as an original Apple 8800GT?

(i.e. 2 x Dual-Link etc works)

Anyone?

I don't want to spend $200-300 on a 4870.

I can get a used 8800GT for $75 or so and flash it, but I need both DVI ports to work (preferably dual link x 2)

Does the card have a 128 or 64 k rom? if its 64 its out of the question.

Yes, the card has a 128K ROM (it's one of the eVGA cards mentioned previously in this thread)

I just want to know if both DVI ports work when it's flashed.

I've read this whole damn thread twice and haven't seen this mentioned anywhere.

I was just planning on buying the 8800GT from Apple, but now that it's not sold anymore, the prices on eBay are ridiculous, so I'm back to flashing a PC card (not a big deal... did it on my old PowerMac with a 9800 Pro)

Here is the screenshot you wanted.

I think its on page two a screenshot is posted of system profiler. It shows that he has two displays connected and says the resolution. So it appears both work. I have never done it though. Hope this helps. :)

Finally got around to doing this with an eVGA card I bought on eBay.

Took a little while to find a download for nvflash, but after that the actual flash process only took about a minute.

Everything works great now. Thanks to all who figured this out.

help choose a card

hi there
1. What other cards of the 2008 mac pro have been successfully flashed?
2. Which version of nvflash do I need to use to flash in Dos?

I just flashed a n evga 8800gt 512-P3-N801-AR and it will not run in anything with a 16x slot, mac pro (1,1) or PC.

any ideas on this one? I used the expansion slot utility to switch the slots to 8x, and it works just fine.... but I would much rather get this puppy up to full speed.

Hello

I'm happy to report a successful flash of a used eVGA 8800GT 512-P3-N801-AR bought from Craigs list.

I used a plain i945 chipset PC for the flash running off of a DOS floppy.

Using NVFLASH 5.63, the command "NVFLASH --INDEX=1 -4 -5 -6 8800GT32.ROM" would not work. It replied with a error: invalid index.

As stated earlier, the command "NVFLASH -4 -5 -6 8800GT32.ROM" did work. After agreeing to several warnings, the flash succeeded and the card went right into my Mac Pro 1.1 and booted up with no problems.

The pre-OS grey screen- Perfect.
The Snow Leopard blue boot screen - Perfect.
Snow Leopard- Perfect
Microsoft Windows XP Pro ran from Boot Camp - Perfect after loading nVidia drivers.

Snow Leopard works without a hitch coming from an ATI 2600
System Profiler seems to like the 8800.
I'm hoping to have a little rendering speed improvement for video editing.

I ran 3DMark under XP and verified high marks and correct fan speedup on the 8800 under load.

Thank you to all who toiled here in order to make this possible. Especially to altimeter who uploaded the .ROM.

Thanks again, :D;)
Keri

PS. As I understand it, the 8800GT is the only Mac Pro 1.1 videocard that supports the OpenCL feature of Snow Leopard.

Hi,

I flashed a EVGA 8800GT Superclocked 512-P3-E802-AR with the 32bit EFI.

The card works perfect with 10.6.4 , but only with 8x lanes.

With 16x lanes the card fan run full speed and the mac pro 1.1 didn`t start.

Can any body help me, please?
