I tried taking a picture, but couldn't quite get one.

Having said that, I never made much effort, because I'm sick of getting Apple products with issues (my new AirPods Pro for example, the case is losing charge when not in use & the buds are constantly showing as charging, even though they are at 100%) so I just boxed it up for return!

However, I got it back out again (I really couldn't be bothered with the Apple exchange game) and gently massaged what looked like chips, and they faded away.

It must have been simply that the outer display wasn't completely stuck down?

Try it with yours, if you have the same issue. Use a microfibre cloth (I used the black one, that used to be supplied with all Macs) and I massaged the areas away.

Here's irony for you: After I completed that last sentence, I closed the lid and heard the feint noise. Closed it several times more, and never heard a thing. I truly hope it's just because it's new, and it just needs wearing in/loosening up?

I know you've already answered this, but I have to ask again: Would you just keep it?

No other issues: Good screen with zero dead pixels (which is a miracle!) good speakers, good everything, really.
So you've already had dead pixels on many Mac units ??

You’re unaware that both the earbuds and the case are constantly using Bluetooth?
Really?

There are numerous threads on this issue, and that was never mentioned (see, I do research before posting.)

Do you think turning off automatically connecting would remedy battery drain/stop the constant connection? Or is it to do with Find My?

It seems that the earbuds are losing charge, hence the case constantly charging them. The buds stay at 100% when fully charged, but they still show as charging.

Yes - but again this should be common sense. This is partly why Apple’s eco-system works so well, they’ve really nailed down Bluetooth and UWB.

The case is constantly losing charge because it needs to provide power to the earbuds; these are also losing charge because the Bluetooth is regularly ‘looking’ for a paired device to connect to. The reason they always have the charging symbol at 100% is because they trickle-charge.

Therefore, it is expected behaviour for them to lose charge.

Hmm.

So do you reckon turning off auto connect would have any effect?

I also have Beats X, and they too lose charge when not in use. They don’t have the Find My feature, so why would they be constant looking for a paired device, when powered off?

Kind of diminishes your common sense comment.

Thanks for taking the time.

If you were me, would you keep it or return it?

Other than this intermittent noise, the unit has no other issues.
It obviously bothers you. If you replace it, the probability is very high that the new one won't make this noise. If you keep it, the probability is unknown whether the noise will disappear through use or even get worse. I would rather base a decision on probability than blind faith. But only you can decide what works for you.

Would this concern you?

Only had the laptop for a week or so, and I really can't be bothered with the "exchange game."

Do you think it's because it's brand new, and will "wear in" & stop?

Or would you return it?

I returned mine and got another and it didn't have the same issue. I think it is correlated with this piece being deformed and causing the noise.

Thanks for the info.

How loud was your "click"?

Also, does the replacement unit have any other defects?
Same as your video. Very audible in a quiet room. No defects this time, got lucky. I noticed they all had different scratches under the screen, probably a manufacturing issue due to high demand right now.

I have the same 2021 MacBook Pro 16'' model as yours, and from the video it sounds like you have the exact same pop / click sounds on your display hinge as I do on mine.

It happens when I'm closing the lid (but almost never when opening it), and usually happens when it's at about a 30 degree angle. One or two very subtle pop / click noises from the display hinge as it's being closed. Don't have any other issues with the computer. The noise is so quiet that most people probably wouldn't notice it unless they were listening for it. So I would think it's more widespread than can be gathered from online forums right now. From the issues I've read on discussion boards about the new 14'' and 16'' MBPs, my guess is exchanging it would open the door to the same or even additional issues.

It's reassuring to know someone else is having this issue and it's not just me.

I completely understand about the hassle of return as I went through 3 Mac's before I ended up with the unit I have now and none of them had defects!

However the issue you raise I honestly can't hear. I know you can hear and I am sure it is there.

I think the question is can you live with it. Assume it stays exactly the same would you be happy with it? You can't assume it will get better or worse as you just don't know.

If you can be happy with the device as is I would keep it but if it bothers you even a little bit it will be something you think about in a negative way as long as you own it.

Who cares about what anyone else thinks. You are going to have to live with it. As far as my experience with these machines-no clicking sounds, no scratches under the screen on the 4 units of MBP 14" and 16" that I had and no other real defects I could see and I am pretty OCD about flaws.

Good luck and I hope you get what makes you happy!

I think it will "wear in" over time, and stop.

And it's intermittent for me.

Is yours constant?

And you're right about getting a model with more "severe" "issues." I get sick of playing the exchange game lottery with Apple stuff. I think I'm just going to keep this because other than that little intermittent noise, everything else is perfect. You keeping yours for sure?

Planning on keeping it, yes. I'll report back to the forum if that changes. If it turns into a real issue, that's what AppleCare is for!

Well I have consumer law on my side, here in the UK.

2 defects in the space of something like 5 years and you can get your money back.
2 defects in 5 years and u can ask for a refund ? never seen such a thing, mind sharing a link or sth ?

besides even tho we have consumer law as i said (im french btw) apple are some of the biggest and worst dicks (im sorry ) you can find, refusing to fix if you dont have apple care + ,acting like dicks in case of a hidden deffect ,etc...apple are greey and the customer service is -imo- absolute garbage (unless ,ofc, you bought an insanely expensive warranty to accompany your 3k apple product )
