The price of the 16GB version is great. (That' the only nice thing I have to say)
My living room's crying out for this. As is my Macbook Pro's power supply which is fed up with being plugged/unplugged around the house.

I myself need to play with it first before making a final decision. Looks pretty promising. It would be nice to have on the couch while watching TV or for taking on trips so I could have access to email or the internet if needed.

saw the videos and it looks amazing! as steve was talking aabout the price i was yelling 500 and ill buy it haha I also think its awesome that it does not need a 3g contract. I have signed up for apple to notify me for when its available. iCan't wait

I think it's more or less perfect for my use: Surfing, music, e-mail and the odd pages/numbers document editing.
That's more or less 99% of what I do at home on my MacBook these days, especially after I got myself a Mac mini server.
The price is even lower than expected/feared, I can get the top level 64GB 3G version for much less than the base white unibody MacBook, probably even if I throw in the (unexpected but ingenious) keyboard dock and camera connection kit (I would have preferred an internal SD card reader, like the MBPs, but you cannot have it all, right?).
Now, if Panic only makes a version of Coda for the iPad, for whenever I need to do a quick fix on some online website from home (I'm already syncing my Transmit ftp-logins over MobileMe), then I cannot see myself using the MacBook anymore, at all...

It is the perfect replacement for a dying 12" iBook for my daughter - she is excited to be able to do writing on it AND play/use her current Touch Apps. She is a mega light user on the laptop side since it's not up to doing much these days.
She will be able to have her media with her when she goes between my house and her dad's at some point in the hopefully near future.
She will be sorely disappointed when she realizes i'm correct and her favorite online game won't work on it. Drat (Disney's Pirates, i'm assuming it's flash based?).
She rejected a netbook in July - felt the keyboards were too small, and despite telling her i'd hackintosh it for her, she just wasn't impressed.

Ya it will probably be jailbreakable, with more content. I think its great for a person who doesn't want to or can't get a macbook but can get this but I think I'll wait for the second update.
I gotta admit I was a bit surprised by the complete and total hatred for the iPad on these forums. Maybe that's because this site has been overrun by Windoze fanbois who have nothing better to do than hate on all things Apple. Or maybe it's overrun by nerds who have never been laid and have nothing better to do than hate on basically everything.
So, just for kicks I went back to early 2007 in the iPhone forum. Yep, hatred all over the place.
So I must conclude that some people just love to whine, and they target anything popular. But it's especially delicious to read about people predicting doom and gloom for Apple, or one of Apple's products (like the iPhone), when said product has gone on to massive success and profit.
Here's my take on why the iPad will succeed.
First, and this is probably the most important thing that the nerds need to read: just like the iPhone, Apple is not attempting to make the iPad a device that will satisfy every single techno wet-dream of every nerd in the world. Companies never profit by doing that. They end up with overpriced devices with poor sales and the nerds will still whine about it all over the internet. It's a no-win situation and Apple and Steve Jobs are way too savvy for that.
Second, it will rob sales from netbooks, laptops and ebook readers. It does many things from each of those categories much better.
Third, most people are NOT tech-savvy. Something you can operate using just your fingertip and one button, that they can handle. Like Steve said, if you can use an iPod or an iPhone, you can use the iPad.
I could go on, but I'm not sure it would make any difference. The masses will buy in, and they could care less that nerds are whining away about the lack of built-in camera (vs. plug-in), stylus (use your finger, duh) or that it won't run MS Office 10 beta in XP mode. They also don't care that it's not (yet) on Verizon.
So yeah, me? I'm happy.

Personally im looking at this as a gaming device. Once we get some serious iPad gaming apps, this thing is going to ROCK .

Haven't been around for long have you? What we're seeing is complete normal and typical of these forums post-introduction of something new.
I'm happy the Tablet finally launched so we can move on to something else.

I am hoping what we are seeing in the demo unit is the new os as well that they hopefully will still announce soon. So maybe some of these new features will carry over to the iphone like background customization.

I was sad when Apple's switch to the intel chip brought a lot of Windows users into this forum. I was saddened even more when the iPhone brought a lot -- LOT -- more of them into this forum...... Ugh!
That said, as far as this new iPad is concerned, I'm excited about it in one way but I am also still trying to justify to myself why I "need" it..... I can quickly assure you that I "want" it but that's....um...different.
I'm happy overall with today's announcement and I think that this new device WILL bring a lot to the table that hasn't been there before.....

It doesn't live up to the hype of the past X years because it couldn't.
However, I like what I briefly read about. I would like to see how reading stuff on it compares to other devices because I'm also considering a Kindle. But if I'm going to spend $260 on a Kindle, I could just drop another $240 and have a lot more use out of the device.
If there's an app that would make it function like a photo frame and do stuff like weather updates, it would save me buying another couple of devices. Add in the keyboard and it provides a nifty portable computer when I don't want to lug around my MacBook Pro.
The best thing is you're not tied into using cell service. It would be nice to have 3G, but I'm not paying the extra $130 for the few times I'm in an area without WiFi. Even if I did, I'm too cheap to pay that $15/month for the data when I'm already shelling out for my iPhone.

Those were dark times indeed. Then it happened again in 2008 with the 3G phone. Then with the 3GS (although not as much if I recall).
It happens a lot. It was at a point where I couldn't even visit the forums because it was over-run with the "Apple=FAIL" and "I'm not buying one" crowd.
