I'm excited. Until I actually get my hands on one, who knows how much I'll like it or hate it. But c'mon people, this thing isn't thousands of dollars. It's five hundred bucks - I'm willing to give Apple the benefit of the doubt at that price.

I Love iPad

I think it is awesome,I will buy one,It is great for college...no more bookbags or textbooks to carry. Plus the chicks will like it in class;)
By the way.....Imagine it in a car & how sweet it will look in the dark plus playing Pandora radio. Hey Steve you have won my wallet !

My Two Cents

I bought a 1st gen iPod. I could tell right away that it was something that would fit into my lifestyle. I haven't gotten an iPhone yet because AT&T service where I work is horrible, so I'm waiting for - hopefully - it to come to Sprint soon.

I definitely see the niche for the iPad. I think the hatred for it now is because many on these forums expected it to replace laptops. What were they smoking? Apple wants to rape sales from MacBooks? I don't think so! I was showing a colleague at work today the ebook textbooks on Course Smart, and they are awkward to use on a laptop to highlight and to use in general. We both remarked how much more intuitive it would be to use on a touchscreen - gee, I wonder who else sees this? Also, to be able to wirelessly receive my newspaper and magazines and take them with me wherever I go, and not have to squint at the pages is something I look forward to.

Having said that, I am smart enough, NOW, to not pay the early adopter tax. I'll wait for a future revision or price drop, even though these seem to be priced pretty well.

I think it is awesome!

I personally like the idea of being totally touchscreen. I like how there are different keyboards depending on what you are doing (i.e. typing a letter or email vs. doing spreadsheet).

The design is also very nice. I like the case that it shows on the Apple site. Looks very functional.

The price is amazing. Yeah it is 16GB-64GB so it will be a bit limited but the idea of this is the apps it has, not being a full fledged power computer. No you won't put Aperture on it but most people will be content using the apps and being able to easily carry iWork around with them in a cool tablet.

I wrote earlier that I was slightly disappointed with the iPad, But I think I have changed my mind. My main complaints are:

1. No camera
2. No native printing (that I know of)
3. No multiple use of apps

After thinking about these problems for a while it occurred to me that two of my top three complaints are software related and will therefore likely be solved when the iPhone OS 4.0 is released. I cannot imagine that Apple will let google and co surpass the iPhone's capabilities for very long.
So that only leaves me to complain about the lack of a camera... which I shall do vigorously in another section of the forum.

Overall I believe that the iPad will be a huge success. To those who say that the iPad is just a big iPod consider this:
1. The iPad has significantly more processing power.
2. The iPad has a significantly larger screen
3. There are LOTS of developers out there who are kicking themselves for not getting on the iPhone bandwagon earlier.

Prediction: In a few months there are going to be apps that purchasers of the iPad will use ALL the time that all of us have never even thought of. This is an opportunity for devs that missed out on the iPhone to get THEIR application positioned as the #1 app in whatever category they choose! The bigger screen size is going to allow all kind of great things to happen! :D :D :D

EDIT: P.S. I Love the Price!!! $100 less than my lowest guess! And only $15/month for 3G with no contract!!! Brilliant!! (even if it is AT&T)

Exactly what the rumors said it would be.

I am really excited about the iPad. As a college student, It looks really convenient; this product is exactly what I'm looking for. Pages, Safari, iTunes, Pandora, and Peggle - What else do you need? I'm very thankful that there isn't another contract with AT&T, that would've been a deal breaker.

I'm thinking that a stand alone iMac or a mac mini attached to a HDTV in addition to the iPad would be a great setup.

My only gripes are no camera, no flash, no multitasking on pandora. Software updates can bring those last two though.

Congrats to Steve Jobs and Apple, you've won my money! Again!

I'm happy with it. No camera is a bit of a head-scratcher, but other than that . . . basically it suffered from over hyping. I mean, you had the NYT, all the technoblogs, shows, mags, ezines or whatever banging on about how the iPad would be some sort of end all device that did everything 1,000,000,000 times better than everything else.

What did you realistically expect from it?

Edit: I'd like to second the college aspect of it. Being able to carry around all my text books, note pads, email, web, etc. in one easy to carry pad is an incredible load of my shoulders. Wish it did have a camera, though.

I'm happy. It was everything I wanted, besides a camera. But if a camera wasn't possible on the iPod touch, then it may not have been possible on this. Everything else just seems to work exactly as I wanted it.

I'm excited and when I pick one up, I'm sure it will be even better.

I was going to buy a 15" MacBook Pro after the i5 update (giving my MacBook to my girlfriend), but now I'm thinking an iMac for power and an iPad for portability.

Don't need much more than word processing, web browsing, apps and iPod on the go... and brushes? Freaking sweet!

When I saw this, I immediately thought of the possibilities. My first revelation...that one day, a car audio company will make a modified dash kit with built-in connectors for a charger and audio jack for the iPad, and that it fits perfectly recessed in the center console, while still being able to easily remove and dock it. Imagine the GPS guidance on that thing...or even watching movies on a road trip.

I'm happy.

It's funny but I have a Kindle DX sitting (on a stand) next to me and this iPad looks a lot like it.

I think that Steve at first was reluctant with the e-reader format but now has apparently gone for it.

Thing is, i'm not going to give up the DX for this but the DX is terrible with pdf's and and any other format except simple text.

This iPad will fill the gap nicely I think. It also will do a variety of other things but it's manly going to be a reader for me.

I'm very excited. (I love e-readers)

I'm happy about it overall. I was expecting to have a bit more connectivity, but the fact that it's an aluminum shell surprised me.

I think they'll throw multi-tasking in there eventually, so I'll wait and see how it pans out. I'm not usually an early adopter on things like this.

I gotta admit I was a bit surprised by the complete and total hatred for the iPad on these forums. Maybe that's because this site has been overrun by Windoze fanbois who have nothing better to do than hate on all things Apple. Or maybe it's overrun by nerds who have never been laid and have nothing better to do than hate on basically everything.

So, just for kicks I went back to early 2007 in the iPhone forum. Yep, hatred all over the place.

So I must conclude that some people just love to whine, and they target anything popular. But it's especially delicious to read about people predicting doom and gloom for Apple, or one of Apple's products (like the iPhone), when said product has gone on to massive success and profit.

Here's my take on why the iPad will succeed.

First, and this is probably the most important thing that the nerds need to read: just like the iPhone, Apple is not attempting to make the iPad a device that will satisfy every single techno wet-dream of every nerd in the world. Companies never profit by doing that. They end up with overpriced devices with poor sales and the nerds will still whine about it all over the internet. It's a no-win situation and Apple and Steve Jobs are way too savvy for that.

Second, it will rob sales from netbooks, laptops and ebook readers. It does many things from each of those categories much better.

Third, most people are NOT tech-savvy. Something you can operate using just your fingertip and one button, that they can handle. Like Steve said, if you can use an iPod or an iPhone, you can use the iPad.

I could go on, but I'm not sure it would make any difference. The masses will buy in, and they could care less that nerds are whining away about the lack of built-in camera (vs. plug-in), stylus (use your finger, duh) or that it won't run MS Office 10 beta in XP mode. They also don't care that it's not (yet) on Verizon.

So yeah, me? I'm happy.

did you take a second and actually look at the complaints for the original iphone?

price too high - 2 months later apple dropped the price by 33%

no 3G - apple added 3G a year later

lack of applications - apple added app store 1 year later

no cut and paste - apple added cut and paste 2 years later

at&t exclusivity - still people unhappy with it

etc.

guess what? those nerd complaints were 100% on the money. the iphone 2G was not a success. it wasn't until iphone 3G when apple addressed some of the major complaints that it really took off

I wasn't sure if I would like it or not but I think once this thing is jail-broken it will be awesome! So yeah! I'm happy!:):):):)

I cannot wait for the iPad.

I think it pretty awesome and it is only a first gen. Just think what will come following subsequent software updates.

This product may throw a roadblock in my plans to get a good dSLR. But, I will probably get the dSLR anyways because right now I would be paying the "must have" tax. I love the product, can't wait to see it by fall or next January.

I really like this thread. I am trying to convince everyone that this is something. I really hope gaming companies look at this as a gaming console. It'd would be a worth to me and everyone else. I just hope everyone jumps on the Ipad app store wagon.

The original iPhone was a huge success, the 3G was a bigger success.

It seems to me that complaining nerds are slow learners. Apple ALWAYS introduces products "missing" features and then adds them over time. None of those revisions are made in response to angry complaints. Apple's product pipeline works years ahead, so they know full well where they're going. Apple is not a reactionary company and all of the bitter angry nerd complaints don't change a damn thing.

I cannot wait for the iPad.

I agree. Software updates are one thing, but future hardware updates will be even better. We'll see processors capable of handing multitasking, we'll see flash, we'll see a front-facing camera, we'll see 256+ gig flash drives. We'll also see it hugely successful and all of the people having strokes right now will all love the iPad.

Im excited and will be the first in line for one. I think it was hyped to the point that it could walk on water and people would be disappointed. People will change their mind once they get to play with it. Most of the complaints are software related anyway and will be fixed down the road.
