Most users stream video (Youtube, Netflix, etc)
Most users stream music (Youtube Music, Spotify, Apple Music)
iCloud Photo is enabled by default on new Apple devices

So what exactly should most people do with 256GB?
Why not make the base model cheaper which will satisfy most users?
My wife is a normal "casual user" and she has 35GB free on her 64GB iPhone 11.
This is iPad Mini not iPad Pro, I don't expect most buyers will be power users.

Don't say "most users", that is just an assumption.

I travel where streaming is not possible so if I want the media, I better take it with me either internally (ideal) or on attached storage.

I bought the 256GB model. 128GB isn't quite enough, though I don't usually come close to filling the full 256GB. I've got 256GB in my 1st gen 11" iPad Pro and it's still doing great (battery is aging a bit, but otherwise it's still zippy fast). The mini 6 should actually be faster.

Too bad the mini 6 doesn't have a 120Hz display. Would love an 8.3" iPad Pro....!

The true dick move is not offering the Goldilocks 128gb option. THAT makes this a classic Apple cash-grab.
This was the exact same situation when I bought my 1st gen 11" iPad Pro. Forced to pay $150 for 256GB because 128GB was not an option. I remember being very annoyed.
As it turns out, by using iCloud, I have not actually used anywhere near 256GB. However 64GB would have been really tight. I have very occasionally used slightly over 64GB.
IMO 64GB is fine for an iPhone (if you use iCloud for photos and such). But not so good for an iPad, unless you just use it for consumption.

This is more an opinion than a question. I think it was a total d!ck move of Apple to even give this as an option. It's 2021, why on earth is any device still sporting an old 64GB HDD? Obviously Apple wants users to buy the more expensive one, it should have been 256GB vs 512GB. I was kind of looking forward to a new iPad Mini, but this just frustrates me with how it's such a blatant money grab.
Small sample size, but most people I know never even use 32gb. There is no reason why apple needs to force everyone to pay for 128gb, just because you think they should. As long as they give me the option to pick the storage capacity I want, I'm good with it.

The iPhone 13 at $699 still has the most powerful CPU of any smart phone, and a more private (not perfect of course) and more secure OS. It's a great value compared to any Android phone near it's price range. I'm on a OnePlus 8T by the way, just saying, people love to hate on apple for the wrong reasons.

the iPhone 13 comes with 128GB standard, which is great. Pretty annoying that the iPad Mini, launched at the exact same time, comes with only 64GB.
If Apple isn't forcing iPhone 13 owners to pay extra for 128GB, why cannot the same be done for the iPad Mini? I am just not following the logic; sure feels like a cash grab by deliberately providing a minimal base storage to force upgrades for many people. Furthermore, 128GB isn't even an option; you have to upgrade all the way up to 256GB.
They must have saved $10 by putting in 64GB instead of 128GB.
The iPad Mini is also touted as something more capable than the base iPad (which has 64GB base storage).

IMO the real reason that Apple does this and gets away with it, is that there is no effective competition (for tablets).

I bought an iPad 3 Retina in 2012, and got 64gb. Even when storing photos on it as a backup on a trip, I never filled it. I have Notability on it and have recorded and taken notes on many seminars, and used it for work meetings for 4 years. If I'd bought a new one in the past couple of years I'd have seriously considered a smaller one.

I am considering one now as the 3 is really slow, and doubt I'll go above 64gb. I do most of my work on my laptop (just don't get me started on the 256gb on that thing!)

OTOH I've filled both my phones due to many many random pix. I prefer my "real" camera, but my phone's always in my pocket......

iPhone 13 mini 128GB = $699
iPhone 13 128GB = $799

iPad mini 6 64GB WiFi = $499
iPad mini 6 64GB 5G = $649

With that said, I would've liked to have a 128GB 5G option for $699.

I'm just getting a case from Amazon. The official folio doesn't seem all that longer lasting compared to alternatives that are 10-20% the cost.

Good point - I've never bought the Apple cases. That will shave about $40 off. Now down to about $905 - still ouchy for a mini.

Awesome that Apple also sells a 256GB then. However, I don’t think most users travel where streaming is not possible.

I should probably have gone for the 64 GB with 5G instead of the 256 GB with 5G since my current Mini 5 has 44 GB available. But I guess I will install more games on the new one because I didn’t on my current Mini because I felt it wasn’t really fast enough to enjoy them. So add some offline movies and music for traveling and I would most likely have trouble with a 64 GB.

Yep, very annoying!

64GB is too little storage for me, but the cost of the 256 is way too much for what i'd use the iPad for. I'm sure Apple know the market better than me though, I'm sure 64 vs 256 makes sense for the majority.

Agree so much! Strange options.

I don't understand why the Mini didn't get an 512GB option, esp since they make ads with it being connected to a pro camera system and loading photos on the iPad. And with people editing music (I think) etc.

For the Air 4, ok, I understand. They want user to upgrade to the Pro line. But there is no real competition for the Mini. So why not make even more money out of it and offer 512GB? No idea. They could make just a few devices in comparison with 512GB storage but no option at all? The only thing that I don't like. I love everything else, including starlight color I ordered.

I originally ordered 64GB on Tuesday. Just chatted with an Apple rep to change it to 256GB.

Too bad there isn't a 128GB which I think is the sweet spot. While 64GB like on my current mini is fine for now, I'm worried about the future since minis tend to last.

64BG can be more enough for people who are using it for streaming, light productivity along with iCloud storage. On my XR 64GB, I struggle to get above 40 GB, for example. If you take a 'Cloud first' approach, your device is basically an edge cache.

If you have lots of creative apps and games and are a 'pack rat' who wants all of their content downloaded at all times - then yes, 64GB isn't going to cut it.

It's annoying when Apple upsell you though i.e. from 'Hmm is this going to be enough?' to 'I'm never going to use this space!' with nothing in-between.

Given the way they marketed it as a device many can use in different situations it’s a surprise it starts at 64GB
