The true dick move is not offering the Goldilocks 128gb option. THAT makes this a classic Apple cash-grab.
I was looking for an iPad, but 32GB was not enough and I didn't want to pay $100 more for the 128GB model.

Now, the base model has 64GB which is still not enough, but if I upgrade to 256GB I now have to pay $150 more.

Thanks Apple! ?

where hip is spoken
64GB is an absurd amount of storage for basic web browsing as a secondary device. I would rather have saved $75 or $100 and gone with 32GB.
The price that Apple pays for NAND flash (was: RAM) has little connection to what they charge for storage tiers. They would've dropped it to 32GB and kept the price the same.

(edited for correction: thanks @rui no onna !)

The price that Apple pays for RAM (or NAND) probably has NO connection to what they charge for storage tiers. I was just expressing a figure based on personal value. :)

Awesome that Apple also sells a 256GB then. However, I don’t think most users travel where streaming is not possible.
I’m an exception. Almost the only places I travel have mediocre cell service, at best. At my parents’ house, I struggle to do regular internet and email stuff. I usually have to go outside to make calls on my Verizon phone, AT&T signal inside the house is usually non-existent, and T-Mo scrapes by.

At our camp, it‘s marginally better, meaning not a struggle, but still not great. That’s AT&T. My Verizon phone sucks and T-Mo is MIA.

That's been my experience in an awful lot of places across the US. I do not depend on the cloud or having connectivity.

Since the iPad mini has never been my main iPad device, I tend to go for the base or middle storage tier. 32GB on the original iPad mini, 64GB on the 5th and 6th gen.

The mini is a great device for musicians especially. It's more like the size of an instrument now. I imagine a lot of creative fields will find getting the 256GB as a worthwhile upgrade. Super excited to get mine

Who says it’s only use is as a basic web browsing device or secondary device?

On my iPad pro I always go for more storage because I do a lot of content creation. On my phone, I also go for more because I take a lot of pictures and videos.

I have had small tablets including a Mini and an 8" Android. Since I do neither of these activities on a small tablet, I always go for the smallest storage. 64 seems a little small in 2021, but I think it should be fine for mainly games and content consumption.
I ordered the 64GB model. I have the 64GB 5th generation and have 27GB free.

I’m guessing if Apple offered a 64GB iPad with a 12.9” screen there would be a market for it. Some people just want the bigger screen.

At $1099 starting MSRP though, it was past time they increased base storage to 128GB. It likely costs Apple less than $5 to go from 64GB to 128GB. Even if they kept 64GB as base, it would still have started at $1099.

I often recommend the Apple certified refurb store for those looking for good deals on iPads. When they're in stock, the 2018 12.9 64GB is just $629 from there and comes with 1 year warranty and fresh chassis+battery. The 2020 12.9 128GB is currently available for $749.

I have been deciding about which iPad to get the whole weekend. I am little disappointed that there is no 128GB option but I decided to pull the trigger on the 64GB option. An upgrade to 256GB is practically 1/3 of the price of the base model so could not justify paying extra. Also I purchased Applecare+ for peace of mind and down the line I would like to get the Apple Pencil and the Folio case, so it all adds up.

I am happy with my purchase and I am excited to receive it.

I upsized to 256gb when I bought the 10.5 iPad Pro in 2017. My thinking was that I’ll need the space.

fast forward to now, I’ve only used at most 35gb.
I’ll be going 64gb.
I mainly use my iPad for streaming, web browsing, lite use.

Yes, if I had to choose between Apple Pencil and 256GB upgrade, I would definitely go for the Apple Pencil. It has totally transformed what I can do with the iPad.

You inspired me, I also ordered the Apple Pencil (2nd gen). I am still on the fence about 64gb because it is small for such a big purchase but I keep on reassuring myself that I am fine as I do not run any intensive games nor do I save videos and that I have iCloud...

Agreed. I will personally be choosing the Pencil over the boost in storage. I pay for iCloud storage anyway.

isn‘t it first generation pencil only?
