Okay. After some initial success with 11.3 and then another update to 11.3.1... a reboot has broken everything and I'm in the total rebuild category. Bummer. Currently restoring to 11.23 through a full erase and restore. This really left my system a mess. Was running successfully on a NVME but can't get it to do it again. I'll play around with various scenarios later. The same thing happens most boots, hang on initial boot. It looks like it cant get past the install process.

as mentioned earlier -- this is not the thread for Mac OS 11.3 issues. by posting in the dedicated thread, not only we keep this thread on topic but we provide valuable data to expert members who are trying to pinpoint the cMP issues with 11.3.

@h9826790

Hi Martin,
thank's again for your work and your package. Wanna let you know something because I am not shure if this feature is only for you (Radeon VII) and should be better set in your package to false:

  1. DirectGopRendering
    Type: plist boolean
    Failsafe: false
    Description: Use builtin graphics output protocol renderer for console.
    On certain firmware, such as on the MacPro5,1, this may provide better performance or fix rendering issues. However, this option is not recommended unless there is an obvious benefit as it may result in issues such as slower scrolling.

If I let this feature unmodified (default true in your package) than the console output is really slow. I set this feature to false and the output is much faster.

As you have an RX570 set it to false. Here is a section from page 1 of the OpenCore on the Mac Pro forum by @cdf

"Disable the special GOP renderer if not needed

For maximum compatibility, the sample configuration enables a special GOP renderer to display the boot picker. This option, which is needed for the Radeon VII and some versions of the 5700 XT but not for the RX 580, can cause undesirable effects (such as slow scrolling) and therefore should be disabled if not needed.
  • Find DirectGopRendering and change true to false"

I created a new "easy to install package" as per many requested (based on the official OpenCore). [The attached package already updated to 0.6.9]

@h9826790 Hi Martin, could you let me know which of these is known good for Catalina OTA Update incl. exact config? I am using -0.6.9 with the VMM flag set and am not getting anything.

Hi, after installing OpenCore 0.6.9 and turning on hardware acceleration my MacPro 5,1 with 2 X5690 reports as 2 X5670 @2.93Ghz. Is there a way to fix this. I followed a guide from OpenCore thread and double checked my config.plist. Is it something to do with AppleMCEReporterDisabler.kext? Anybody else has similar issues? I see people having hardware acceleration enabled and still showing 2x 3.46GHz cpus... Thank you.

Please simply use my package in post #1314. I won't provide any support for your own config. It's practically impossible for me to know what you've done wrong.

Try using @h9826790 0.6.9 as is without changing anything so everyone is on the same page. Personally I start with that them work on a custom config.plist after while adding the extension bkup to Martin's one in the zip. I keep both the bkup and my custom plist in the same place in the OC directory on my EFI partition. This way when I screw something up in the file, there is a default config that I can get to by using a USB installer and using terminal from recovery mode. and, until 0.6.7 I never thought of changing any of Martin's work. But then I started wanting to customize icons, and boot pocket styles and some drivers. But I always keep what came in the zip file handy and ready just in case. :cool:

I am still switching between OpenCore and native boot. Native boot requires NVRAM boot-args="-no_compat_check"

This is still wiped out in booting native after an OC boot.
config.plist has the following value pairs:
<key>LegacyEnable</key>
<false/>
<key>LegacyOverwrite</key>
<false/>
<key>LegacySchema</key>
<dict/>
<key>WriteFlash</key>
<false/>
I might not be reading the manual correctly, but shouldn't the latter prevent overwriting the real NVRAM?

Is there any other place I should look?

Yes. However, if you're adding boot-args in your OC config (which I don't recommend), then you'll actually want to set WriteFlash to true to make the setting persist when booting natively.

Hi. Can anyone explain to me what "DirectGopRendering" in the config means? I don't really understand the "GOP" jargon and cannot find any explanation in the manual that makes sense to me. I read somewhere here that for RX580 this should be off (false) but Martin's config has it as true (and he seems to err on the safe side generally).

Booting into safe mode and even though it failed this brought the system back for me.

I have been using this with minor tweaks and it does a great job for Catalina & Big Sur. Mojave runs fine without OC, bit stalls half way through boot with a black screen. I have had this issue since I tried OC for the first time.

Any idea of what parameter could be the problem?

Did you try the package without modifying it? It sounds like you removed / disabled agdpmod=pikera in the config.

Ok so here I am to throw a wrench into the issues with Big Sur 11.3...

I finally had a lax day at work and got to sit in the air conditioning at the office and figured I'd get some paperwork done. So I went to log into my cMP in my office and first thing I noticed is it was not at the normal Lock Screen, it was at the login screen. Soo I logged in and it wanted to verify my iCloud, first sign of updating. So I hit up one of my employees who said ya while I was out on client sites, all the Mac popped up the update thing so she updated them all. DOH!!! For most machines in the office it is no big deal, however for my cMP and 2010 MacBook Pro no one is supposed to touch them. So I was expecting a terrible day from that point on and was preparing my mind to roll back to 11.2.3 from my time machine.

To my surprise the machine works almost flawlessly. I can reboot without getting the shutdown error at login. It reboots just as fast as before, it is a little bit slower on the shutting down before a reboot, but everything that was working , still is. Including my USB Card in Slot #4.

There are some hardware differences between my home and office cMP. The one at my office is a 2009 cMP with 1 6 core processor. It is flashed to the 5,1 firmware. The other thing is that although I have tons of USB peripherals they are different than at home. They are mostly printers, scanners, and drive docks. I have 3 monitors all 1080P on a GTX 680 4GB which I have never bothered to set up for DRM cause well, it's my office computer -lol.

I am trying to explore this more as I have no clue what the differences are other than the machine year, the vid card and the less RAM in my office machine. Now that being said I have not updated my OC in forever since it is my office machine and has been very stable. I have attached a zip with my EFI files in case someone wants of has the time to explore this.

For my 5,1 at home I had to restore back down to 11.2 because it was too unstable/. However I did create a partition on another drive which I will be installing 11.3 on to start doing some testing with.

Try rebooting at least 30x in a row. Simply click "Restart" from the login screen. If you can get past 30 reboots without issues, your machine might prove useful at some point for testing. My personal record is 22x successful reboots before getting a fail on the 23rd attempt, and I've performed hundreds of reboots on every version of 11.3 from beta 3 through 11.4 beta 3. Conversely, I've had a dozen fails in a row as well. It's that random. Also the place it hangs each time is random - on the same system.

I can try that on my office cMP tomorrow if I have time a work. However tonight I took a gamble. I took the zip file I posted and put it in place on my home cMP which had 0.6.9 on it. I have rolled back the main OS drive to 11.2. everything is working although I did need to use the attached modified config.plist to fix the DRM. Other than being a tad bit slow from the time I login till the time everything is up and running it seems to work great no more errors at all, However this is on the 11.2 drive, and the slow loading is because I have too much junk at startup. However if it can't handle all the junk I have running then it is useless anyways.

I have partitioned off a chunk of one of my other drives and installed 11.3.1 now I need to set up a dummy user and then begin testing reboots, DRM, etc. I will be using the 0.6.5 that is currently installed as when I ran the setup I had no errors including no weird lockups. It did take almost an hour and 45 min though to install, but it is on a partition of a spinning drive. So I expected this. What I did not expect was for it to install like it would on a supported Mac.

I have to do some remote work for a client tonight, so that's about all I can do till tomorrow. Once I finish up adding a user to the 11.3. I'll do as you said with the reboots and see where it goes from there. If I can get some solid stable results I had thought about making another tiny test partition and being what the newest beta is doing. I can't imagine Intel support being totally dropped for a few years yet due to the current MP and the other s they have on the store with an intel chip, but I guess well find out more on that at WDCC :cool:

I used the first method, but I have to change the MLB to 7BA5B2D9E42DDD94,
My PC is a legacy PC using Xeon without internal graphics, I am using an eGPU rx570, do I need to use the second method to activate HEVC (H265)

I upgraded my (flashed) 5,1 from Mojave the other day & Big Sur feels sluggish AF. 0.6.9 Clover... I turned SIP off and didn't change, or do anything in the configurator.

Decent 12-core 3.46 machine with 96GB RAM, Radeon 580RX, Evo 860 SSD on PCI card, wired mouse & keyboard. Three monitors – 4K LG & two Dell HDMI. Ran fine on Mojave... I also created another SSD with Catalina. same sluggishness – UI and mouse feel wonky, typing in some apps feels delayed, Chrome feels laggy. Adobe Illustrator is unpleasant to use & Photoshop UI flickers at times. No changes if I use the 4K monitor only.

I have another machine 32GB 6-core SSD 540RX & the computer UI feels much snappier overall. One 27" Cinema Display only.

Ideas or tips anyone?

What do you mean by "Clover" - did you create your own config? Try h9826790's 0.6.9 config: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...n.2180095/page-53?post=28255048#post-28255048

If still sluggish, try changing DirectGopRendering to false and see if it improves.
