Every time? I don't switch between the two that often (mostly in Mojave these days) but with the last two betas, the couple of times I have rebooted to Mojave it hasn't double rebooted.

Every single time so far. It may not be as noticeable on a full shutdown/boot but it’s still doing it. Just not as obvious as a restart. Mind you, this is when switching between the 2 macOS’s.

Repeated subsequent booting to either OS doesn’t exhibit this behavior.

...Just a follow-up to my monitor issue yesterday. I've bought a DP-to-HDMI adapter for my second monitor and everything seems fine now. Wheew!! ;) I'd still like to know more about this DVI problem, as it prevents me from getting a 3rd monitor as it is now.

.....Now waiting for my CPUs to arrive.....

My pair of 5680s arrived yesterday!!:cool::cool:

.....Now waiting for amazon to deliver my thermal paste combo some time next week...

Exciting times!:p

You find this official guide useful - I did. Before doing my CPU upgrade, I watched several videos. They each seemed to have their own unique "best practice" for applying thermal paste and tightening the screws. I've always been a believer that the people who engineered it have a pretty good idea of what they're doing.

wow that will come very handy thank you!

So!..... I now have everything to install my new CPUs. I have watched a couple videos regarding the installation and there's a blurry area regarding the heatsink screws. Some say we should turn x times to unscrew and x times to screw, others say there's no need to worry about that because you only have to tighten the heatsink until the screws somehow lock up by themselves. Any particular and extra-careful advice for this step? Last thing I want obviously is risking the CPUs to overheat...

Also, about the thermal paste, the manual above say it should be applied like this:

...While I've seen different methods on you tube, such as (as recommended by Intel apparently):

...or:

^^ I'm really not crazy about that last one... But I'm not sure if should go as the Apple manual suggests, or as Intel suggest (single line from left to right)

Well... it didn't go as smooth as I thought. Everything went well during the installation, and then I boot the Mac... Nothing happens. Normal chime which I thought at least was a good sign. But after that I saw all lights on some of my USB devices (specifically my wacom tablet and 2 external drives) go on and off (not flashing, just on, then off, then on, etc) and the monitors stayed black no matter what (I don't have boot screens).

Then I put back the original CPUs, no problem. I tried again with the 5680s, same result. Nothing but black screens. I reset the PRAM just in case, then the mac started to reboot by itself. I forced the shut down then, for the second, time put the original back in place, everything is normal.

I'm a bit lost as to what's going on to be honest. I tightened the heatsinks the same way each time, I cleaned, recleaned, applied, reapplied the thermal paste the same way each time, I made sure the CPUs were properly seated.

I noticed the CPU A heatsink seemed pretty hot with the 5680s, maybe it's normal, but it doesn't change a thing anyway: the 5680s won't work no matter what. Not sure what I should do at this point. I admit I'm kinda frustrated right now!

^^^^Have you tried it with just one CPU in Tray "A". The fans will go crazy, but it will show you if the CPU is good or not. If that doesn't work, try the other CPU in the same tray.

Perhaps you got a bad X5680. I believe you can test w/ just one installed (somebody else refresh me if I'm wrong on that), so you might want to try each one in turn.

EDIT: Dang you, flowrider, that's twice I've been beaten to the punch today! :p

Or... you could skip paste and go with reusable thermal interface material. from IC Solutions. Just trim and install. No worries as to where the past goes.

CPU paste has always worked well for me. I have always used the credit card method with good results.

I don’t know... for sure I’m done for today! I guess I’ll try again this weekend. I was so looking forward to doing this upgrade!
[doublepost=1536963618][/doublepost]Maybe I'll try this: reinstall the 5680s but this time with my original GPU (HD 5770) so maybe I'll be able to see what happens during boot...?

If still got a pre Mojave disk, that's def a good idea, and unplug everything else (leaving just kb/mouse, monitor of course). The fewer the variables the better. My bet is that one or both the CPU's are no good. I put in 2 x5680s w/ no issues.

Ooooh, that's niiiiice. What's a good source for that, and how pricey is it?

It's 12.99 for a 40mmx40mm sheet on amazon. The 30mmx30mm @9.99 a sheet is just a bit too small for the lga 1366 cpu. I have it on two single and two dual CPU's

It's super easy to work with, and it's reusable if you upgrade the cpu

very strange.. i was attempting to upgrade my 2009 4,1->5,1 today with some X5690s and also was unsuccessful. Just fans spinning, sometimes a blinking power light, but wouldn't boot. not even with only 1 cpu and 1 stick of ram, tried both sockets, both cpus everything. maybe something in the latest Mojave firmware is screwing with the cpu upgrades? i'm out of ideas for today too, been at it last 4 hours.

That’s both interesting and a bit worrying!! If true though it could save me a few more bucks cause I’d be willing to buy another pair soon. What could possibly prevent a “new” cpu from being installed? Hopefully it’s just an unfortunate coincidence that we both weren’t successful... hmmm...

I’m on High Sierra with the latest firmware.

Trying to find more info...

From what I've read, the startup chime is generated after the power-on self test, meaning if the processors were faulty I wouldn't even hear the chime. That would imply the 5680s re working fine. So... back to square one! It's not the RAM either since I don't have any errors with the original CPUs - this simple fact actually (the computer working perfectly with the factory CPUs) proves everything works just fine, from RAM to HD/SSD to GPU etc.

I did see this on Apple discussions (in reply to someone who was having having similar problems, stuck at the Apple logo - I bet mine is stuck at the logo as well I just don't see it with the RX 560): Installing High Sierra requires an additional firmware upgrade in the process, so you have made this much more complicated.

That's another reference to High Sierra's firmware...

:confused::confused::confused:

If upgrading your system, don’t use beta OS. Use the most stable you possibly can, which should be 10.13.6.

Please specify WHICH firmware you’re on, the latest varies with beta or non beta.

Please specify WHICH GPU you’re using. Believe you say RX560, which is not an EFI GPU. Problem may be easily addressed by swapping in an official GPU.

Some additional random thoughts to help:
Drive should be a SATA and connected in slot 1 to troubleshoot.
Some recommend disconnecting DVD drive.
Make sure you’re using an EFI GPU and all power cables connected properly and enough for that GPU.
Connect only one monitor, ideally via DP or mDP without signal converters (DP to mDP is an adapter not converter). HDMI and DVI occasionally have issues and limit for troubleshooting.
Remove all but 1 RAM module per CPU.
Remove all non-essential PCIe cards.
Replace CR2032 battery.
Disconnect all networking cables.
Mouse and keyboard hardwired directly to tower via USB2.

Firmware has nothing with your problem.

Once you are on the 5,1 firmware, all Westmere processors are correctly supported.

The missing chime is a problem caused by MP51.0087.B00 and can be resolved with a reconstructed BootROM with the NVRAM fully wiped, this problem is not related with processor support, only with NVRAM trash.

Have you tried running each CPU separately yet?

Lou

No, I had work to do this morning. However I did notice that my startup disk was not properly selected in system prefs. Doesn't seem to be a problem most of the time but could it be that with the new CPUs the Mac went simply with the question mark?? (which I couldn't notice since I have no boot screen...) I have specificially selected my 10.13.6 volume (I have a Sierra 10.12.6 backup as well) as the startup disk now - I may be willing to give this another shot this afternoon...
