Which is why I'll probably drop out of the tablet market when the Air 2 becomes unusable. For me, Apple tablets are too expensive and too much of a niche product with marginal utility to warrant updating as regular as phones. For me, it's a luxury, not a necessity so when it's too painful to use (sluggish), I'll be done.

The new 2017 iPad is insanely affordable and powerful if you don't need the Pro features. There's a new iPad available for all budgets.

Upgraded both iPad Air 2 and iPhone 7 plus to iOS 11 within a day or two after release.
Both devices have had insane levels of stuttering and pauses. Typing is intolerable at times - 5-10 second delays.
Rebooted both - no change. Even basic Apple apps have the same issues. Gaming is a crapshoot - don't know if there will be a 5 second pause at a random point.
It's not a storage issue - I have over 128G free on the phone, and over 30G free on the iPad.
Have removed several apps without and difference.
Only thing I haven't done is a full reset, but I may have to do that.
In general, I'm not impressed with the quality of this release.

Air 2 is an ancient old device now. It's incredible you are still getting free iOS updates every year. But if you want the very best iPad experience, you must now upgrade to one of the new iPad Pro models.
It's not ancient in my books. My Air 1 is perfectly adequate for all kinds of work on iOS 11. I’ve been keeping up with the consumer tech rat race since DOS and I’m fed up with forced obsolescence.

Ancient? It's 3 years old - that hardly qualifies as ancient. For myself, I don't see enough value in the new iPads to update.

The Air 2 was at least a year ahead of iOS development when it was introduced. "Ancient" simply isn't correct. The 2017 iPad isn't much different in terms of SOC and graphics, and it's inferior in its display. The killer feature of the 2017 iPad is its price, which is amazing, not its performance.

Affordable, yes. Powerful, meh.

iPad Air 2, I would not consider ancient, my friend has one and it runs quite well on iOS 11. It had some issues at first I advised him to wipe and reinstall. And set up as new. It then was fine. I retired a iPad 4 after last pro update. It ran all of the iOS 10 betas though the final releases. Gave it to my niece and of course it’s not a beast but runs surprisingly well for its age. iPads have a lot more longevity and the last versions of each generation have better hardware. Air 2 I would not write off yet.

For me, still not worth the $ to dump my 128GB LTE Air 2 for equivalent 2017 iPad.

The Air 2 is a little slower on some benchmarks, a little faster on others. It is noticeably thinner and has a laminated display with AR coating, neither of which the 2017 iPad has. No way I'd go to the 2017 iPad from an Air 2. In fact, if I were buying today, I'd buy a refurb Air 2 rather than a new 2017 iPad.

That is what happened on my Pro as well, it wasn't just little stutters it was big and really irritating, not to mention an app I rely on wasn't even compatible with iOS 11 or Safari 11 (I couldn't log in at all) Performance was define I mean things loaded in normal and quick, but overall experience was too much of a step back compared to the stutter/bug free envirment of iOS 10.3.3. (I kinda feel like this is OSX Snow Leapord for my iPad, iOS 10 works flawlessly)

You can see clearly how laggy the animations are

My Air 2 seems fine on iOS 11. Curious why some are seeing issues.

Close apps by pinching with five fingers. You’re gonna see animations lag

Wow. That’s surprising since the Air 2 was an upgrade to the original Air which I have and version 11 runs quite well on it.

Pretty bad for me. See here

What happens when you do the five-finger app minimization gesture? Both my Air 2 and Mini 4 stutter.

Having the same problem. Animations lag when closing app with five fingers

Those videos are from Oct. 2 - what build was that? I'm running 11.1 Beta 4 on my Air 2 and it's extremely smooth. But I saw stuttering on earlier releases.

11 - 11.0.3 all stutters while closing app by five finger gesture. I reported that since all the way back in iOS 11 beta 2. Apple didn’t care

Since it appears fixed in later Betas, I would disagree that they didn't care. You need to try the latest build and evaluate.

Here's hoping they get that and other performance problems fixed. Sometimes things fixed in a beta release revert in the public release. I'd like this fixed - there's a lot to like about iOS 11 on an iPad.

It's been a steady progression of improvement from one Beta to the next and there's a lot of speculation that Beta 4 is what will become 11.1 released.

I had seemingly the same issues. I did a reset, erase and started over treating the Air2 like it was a new machine. What’s a difference. So do yourself a favor and give it a last chance. Complete reset and treat it like it was new. Do not do a restore. My experience was incredible.

I did, very seriously so. Same on my Mini 4 (less surprising, given A8 processor). Put both back on 10.3.3, though I really liked the keyboard and dock in iOS 11.

Ohh! You don’t need to go back to 10.3.3. Reduce transparency solves the problem. Did you report this problem to Apple?

I have had reduce transparency and reduce motion turned on in Settings since I set up it up originally and I still had extremely jerky/laggy performance (with both iPads). No, didn't report it.

Turn off reduce transparency and reduce motion. Then open an app and close with five fingers. You’re going to see choppy animations

I never turned them on, sorry. I do not see any slow down.

Can't say I'm thrilled about 11.x on the Air 2 - is this the beginning of the end? But its nothing as bad as iOS 8/9 was for the iPad 2 - those were utter death.

What build are you running? I'm on 11.1 Beta 5 (final 11.1) and it's very good. A few stutters here and there but other than that performance on my Air 2 is excellent. Early word on 11.2 Beta 1 is that it's better yet. If this is the beginning of the end, it's going to be a long ending.
