Anyone else tried with recoded videos from windows media center? Last time I tried, it completely choked on the conversion process. But those files are way large though.

If they're large-file HD movies, you'd better have an uber computer to convert them on the fly. If you can't convert them in advance.... hmmm..

wow this app is fantastic. I was just watching my videos over 3g at 50% still looked fantastic. Now I cant wait to get my ipad. I was wondering how I was going to stream my videos too it as even with 64gig version they wouldnt all fit.

How do you set it up to stream over 3G? Does this mean as long as your computer is on and the program is running, you can stream video from anywhere?

The best thing about Air for the iPad is that you don't need to do live conversion anymore :D

Crap! I've been re-encoding all of my movies this week to Handbrake's Universal because the format I used for the AppleTV had to convert on the fly to my iPhone. So I figured it would be the same for the iPad 3G (Whenever that comes)
We're talking 277 movies and 3106 episodes of TV ~2.5TB. I would rather not redo the TV shows because putting them in iTunes is a pain.

But how do I set up the server through 3G? It's easy to do it over WIFI, how does my iPhone know what server to find when I'm not at home?

There's an Internet-aware (non-local) server, that you set up a password for, and it works just fine. It's all there in the server preferences. You just need to set up a port for it, and it works just fine.

I don't say this about many apps or games I buy, but the developer should be charging a lot more than $2.99 for this as well as it works. $2.99 is a STEAL.

Leagues better, yes. I talked to the developer of streamtome, and he said he would fix the video quality issues in the next iteration. But... Air video is perfect quality now, and has a much better UI. If I'm not mistaken, it will also stream playlists from iTunes.

I sent a email to Air Video this morning about some ideas for the iPad and this app.
1) VGA out
2) Like Scrabble, use an iPhone or iPod Touch to control the iPad. This would make the iPad work like an Apple TV on the go, as long as you can stream your library to it anyway. A more efficient and less heat generating Apple TV.

BTW, they replied in less than 5 hours. "we might be able to address in future releases."

I would gladly pay more for that functionality.

Have been using this on my iphone for a while now and I can highly recommend it.

One of the functions that you would imagine would come built in remedied with the 'there is an app for that' culture.

Thanks guys.

I sent in a request for a few features:

Xgrid Conversion - Would be nice to tap into my Xgrid nodes, since my main server is a lowly Mini running 10.6 Server

ISO Mounting - I keep alot of DVDs in ISO format, would be nice if the Server could crack these open and serve out the VOBs

VOB support - Support for handling VOBs is needed for the above.

I use beyondtv htpc software that creates ~8gb hd recordings. I'm not having any live conversion problems. Pc is beefy but several years old.

If these get implemented, I'll be even more happy than I am now. :)

I had never heard of this app and just downloaded the free version. Unfortunately Air Video does not stream or convert movies in video_ts folders, and they have not replied to the forum thread about this topic since 3/10. Does anybody know if there is an app for the iPad that can do video_ts? Also, is there any way to make the video go to full screen (it shows as a box on the right side).

I emailed support about this and this is what they said about wtv files that win7 media center records tv in. I don't know if it works with the older dvr-ms format.

Hi,

unfortunately Air Video depends on FFMpeg to do the actual transcoding
and FFMpeg support for wtv is currently lacking at best. The problem
is that wtv is proprietary format. It's specification is closed and it
takes lot of effort to reverse engineer it. Hopefully it will improve
in future.

Kind regards,

Edit: I'm using wtv watcher to convert my shows to dvr-ms format. Air video does just fine with sd. I'll report back when I try a HD show. This is good news. If it does work with HD recordings, air video will be getting a few dollars from me!

I'll throw in my support for this program as well. Been using it for awhile now on my Touch, but on the iPad, the videos look fantastic!

BTW, I have an HP MediaSmart server at my house, and it is running the server side software within NTWrapper to allow the program to run as a service. This way, the server is available 24/7, and the server has a C2D processor in it, so it is more than able to handle the live conversions.

Outstanding app - quite possibly the best I've purchased off the app store.

This is and goodreader are easily the two most useful apps out there!

Air Video simply WORKS. Easily. It could not be any easier and the quality could not be any better or faster. I'm blown away and frankly shocked that they are only charging $2.99. This is one of those apps where if they wanted to, could charge $9.99 if not $19.99 and still increase profits substantially with minimal loss of pure sales volume.

I set up the remote server access today. I can now access my video library remotely, both on my iPad over the work wifi, and on my iPhone via 3G. There's definitely a bit of processing delay, and I have a feeling I won't be able to watch a whole tv episode without some pause/buffering happening, but I haven't been able to test much. Still, pretty impressive. You forward one port on your router, enable Remote access in the Air Video desktop server, make note of your PIN on that screen, and add the server/PIN to your mobile apps.

I was at school today trying to access my movies, and they were choppy/unplayable, i am not quite sure of what settings to change etc.

I was trying to watch an 8gb movie, UP, it plays at home and converts on the fly just great.

What should I expect and what settings can I change to enable smoother/watchable video away from home?

I tested the connection I was on and it was 14mbps down 2mbps up.

Thoughts/tips?

Hmm, I was testing with much smaller files. I wonder if setting your resolution lower (by unchecking the higher resolutions in the client app) would help. I'm not sure about how it decides what resolution to do for remote streaming. My upstream is much lower than yours, though (I am jealous of anyone who has over 1mb up, sigh).

Could also be due to your school's network? I am on a decent office connection for my iPad tests.
