Very nicely done. I pointed the folder to a samba share of my MythTV DVR recordings (all of which are in 720p or 1080i) and the live conversion from my 2.4Ghz C2D iMac works flawlessly. It's awesome to be able to access and watch all of my recorded tv from my iPad with very little setup.

Isn't it awesome? One of the few killer apps so far. And never the need to convert/transfer the files the old-fashioned way, and no issues with storage on the iPad.

I'm going out of town next week, and I'm looking forward to being able to watch my recorded shows back at home over the hotel's free wifi.

I need to read up on how to watch the videos remotely. I didn't even know it was possible! wow, this just made the app even more amazing.

Their implementation is currently "experimental." If you want a more reliable solution, you can do it the old fashioned way by forwarding ports and getting a hostname (dyndns, or an A record on another dns server like your webhost).

This isn't to say their implementation is unreliable, just that it is possible to do it without adding another layer.

Same here.... I'm heading out of town this weekend and won't need to try to find something on the hotel tv to watch when I'll have everything right there over the hotel wifi.

I was at school today trying to access my movies, and they were choppy/unplayable, i am not quite sure of what settings to change etc.

I was trying to watch an 8gb movie, UP, it plays at home and converts on the fly just great.

What should I expect and what settings can I change to enable smoother/watchable video away from home?

I tested the connection I was on and it was 14mbps down 2mbps up.

Thoughts/tips?

In the settings, try reducing the output quality a little. It defaults at 60 or 70%. Bring it down to 40 or 50%....I'd do that for large files and/or slow internet connections.

Battery drain?

Has anyone else noticed a significant battery drain after installing AirVideo?
I'm not talking about when the App is actually running, I mean just having it installed and with "Check WIFI" on in settings?
Shortly after installing this App I noticed my iPad battery going down much faster than usual so I went in and turned of the checking for wifi in settings and now my IPad battery seems to be back to normal. I don't know if that was just a fluke or what but was wondering if anyone else had noticed this?

I have noticed that my battery seems to be draining much faster, but I never connected it with the app. I just went in and disabled "Check for Wi-Fi" and will monitor the batter usage. Thanks for the hint!

You're welcome and please report back your findings!
I'm beginning to learn to check each app's settings and monitor its use before installing another App. I've had this happen on my iPhone with certain Apps as well although I can't remember which ones at the moment.

No. Not possible. Official app store apps cannot affect battery life when they are not running.

then what's the "Check Wifi" option for?
When you start the App, of course it's gonna check for WIFI otherwise how would it run?
I don't get it.
What's that setting for?

If you want to stream live 1080p

You are going to need something faster than a mini, however.

I tried airvideo on the mini (latest model) and it would stutter / pause while streaming.

Tried same video from airvideo on my i7 and it plays all movies without stutter.

So I don't know if it is the cpu or graphics card that is the limiting factor there.

I agree that it is a killer app, but if you want to view media while no internet connection is available, then having local content still has some value.

As I understand it, the decoder must be installed on a running computer, yes? If this means I can only stream/decode MKVs from my wifi based NAS via my MacBook, how will it ever work without stuttering? The file has to be delivered wirelessly to the Macbook, then wirelessly from the MacBook to the iPad. Seems like a tall order.

Someone needs to write an app that can stream from a WDTV Live network share.

Basically that's where I am at as well. Most of my content is on a NAS drive, streams to my MacPro, Netbook, and Mac Mini at will. However, I'd like not to have to have any of those on to connect the iPad. I'd like to just connect to the NAS from the iPad. So far, I'm not seeing how I can do this. Then again my NAS is also not accessed over the internet.

Has anyone got this to work with a Buffalo NAS Drive?

Not sure how to do this or is it possible

Air video is a great app, but i wish that there was a decent dlna app, since i am running a dlna server already.

According to the developer, the Air Video server needs at least a 2GHz Core 2 Duo processor for transcoding.

Therefore most consumer NAS products on the market won't be powerful enough. I've got a 1.6GHz QNAP TS-509, so was quite upset by this myself!
