Can confirm sucking on inside vent resolves the issue. Mine have been busted like that for days, 3-4 hard inhales against the vent solved it immediately. I did notify apple via phone and have a genius bar appt at noon today where I will speak to them about this.

You have to suck HARD

This "oral maintenance" worked for me as well. I don't know why I didn't think of it before, I had to do the same thing every now and then with the original AirPods I had. Thanks for the tip!

"Oral maintenance " I like that. Sucking has too many vulgar connotations.

Even though cleaning the grill seems to work, I still plan to keep calling Apple and get the pods replaced. Yes, I can get it to work, but for what I paid I shouldn’t have to do this. Since a lot of the “common users” would probably not notice the change in performance or just accept it, it rests on us to keep Apple honest about fixing the underlying problem. If those aware of the issue don’t continue to speak up, they may not fix it until they develop an AirPod pro 2. So I now have a new right pod coming because I was having to clean it every day. Making sure they hear this squeaky wheel.

Yeah, they definitely need to be aware and address the issue somehow.

Did you call Apple support to get a replacement? If so, what did you say to them to have them send you a new one? When I called in, they wanted to send me a box to send my whole set in for “repair” and wouldn’t send out only my defective side without them physically having it to diagnose.

I went into an Apple store and got a replacement left side but would prefer not to have to go in each time this happens, if it ends up being often.

Thanks to the community feedback the issue has become clearer.

IMO it’s definitely not an issue than can be fixed with an easy fw update.

Always IMO I think it depends on the use and the specifics of Ears. I mean ears may be more prone to be oily than others: otherwise everybody should have the problem.Probably the combination of 4-5 hours per day plus oily ears make the APP become faulty.

I’ve never failed the test, but I admit I use them just for occasional call or workout or 1-2 hours listening music. I have a couple of week to return them. Really don’t know what to do.

Aslong as they work great it’s ok but this thread worries me: it’s clear there’s a faulty design problem that will be solved probably with gen2.

I really Don’t like the idea to have 279€ product that is likely to be re-engineered in the next months...

I just describe the problem to them and they send it out. It probably is because I opted for the Apple care+ when I bought them. So they give me the option of going to an Apple store or mail a replacement (with a hold charge on my credit card) that is removed when the replacement pod is received.

I was planning on getting AC+ on my set but haven’t yet, so I guess I’ll do that soon. But my worry is that in the future they’ll try to consider this type of replacement to be charged as 1 out of the 2 available $29 incidents.

So did you simply say that one of the sides is not passing fit test, they asked a few questions and then sent out a replacement?

Gave them The whole run down. Said I believe the vent is getting clogged causing issues like A B C D. Guy I was talking to was just like okay no problem we will get one out to you. As long as their is no damage to the pod, I don’t they they would use one of the $30 replacements because it is still under warranty. I mean worst they can do is say they want to do that then refuse saying it is defective and under warranty.

I did this on a pair of launch day pros I got and it worked after some hard puffs. Honestly, it's really infuriating that Apple keeps playing dumb about this. I'm returning mine as it's just a big risk to take. Most people would just accept the sound degradation and never say a thing.

I was supposed to send my AirPods to the Apple engineers and they were going to send me a replacement set but after my fifth set failed, I just returned them to Apple and waiting for a refund now. I did email the Apple engineer that had been talking to me about the issues and I told him about the fix that you guys are doing to resolve the issue. I suggested that it wasn’t really a healthy thing fir customers to have to do to ensure the product works properly. I’m waiting to hear back from them

You need to ask for a "DIY" service. in this case, they send you the replacement and put a hold on your card. When you receive the replacement you put the broken pair in the box and mail it back. When Apple receives it they remove the hold from your credit card. All shipping is paid in both directions. If they don't know what a DIY service is explain to them that you want to get a new pair immediately and send the old pair back once you get the new pair.

It are the inner grills, on the ear-piece. And this makes sense because that is where the feedback mic is located.

I tried to use industrial alcohol to clean the vents but it made the problem come back. (This is how easy it is to replicate).

suck the vents out is the only way to restore them to how they should work.

please all, email Apple and keep bring them back when they fail.

Which vents?

There is only one vent. The other grill is just for decoration,. And the third is the speaker grill

You don't need Apple Care+. Any valid warranty will do. I don't have AC+. I've replaced 2 pair already and never had to be without them as I returned the old pair when the new ones arrived. The shipping is next day air and is free.

So this may not be a firmware issue- insane it actually may be hardware/ I thought the firmware was causing around a 30% degradation on ANC.
