Hi all, great forum here. I had my original set of AirPods Pro replaced a couple of weeks ago as they were having some issues, namely severe battery drain. (They would run out after an hour or so of use.) I did notice the issue of both failing the fit test with all the ear tips too, but the battery issue was more pressing.

Anyway, the replacements have been better, but after a few days, I noticed that the right AirPod Pro constantly fails the fit test. I also notice, then, that the bass is reduced greatly in that ear. I tried the "suck" method and it does appear to work – but only for a very brief time. If I put that same bud in hours later, it'll fail again.

Has anyone noticed this? Barring another replacement, are there any other suggestions on what can be done to correct this issue? (Note that I have also tried to clean them with rubbing alcohol wipes.)

Mine are exactly the same. Fit test and sound improves after the sucking method to open the vent but then reverts back very quickly once I wear them a little.

I've been having the same problem with all of my ear tips constantly failing the fit test. The sound quality is still great and the ANC works about as well as it always has but failing the test was irking me to no end! I think I found a solution. Do a breathing exercise that's suppose to help open up your eustachian tubes. Close your mouth, hold your nose, and gently blow as if you are blowing your nose. I do it for maybe 7 seconds at a time and you may have to do this exercise more than once but most likely one time is all you'll need. Now I pass the fit test with both the medium and large tips! Prior to doing this breathing exercise I could hardly ever get one tip to pass and forget about getting both tips to pass - that would never happen!

Do this test when you have the AirPods in your ears and you'll pass the fit test!

Maybe I was a bit too hopeful - my APP's will eventually fail the test ?. If I do the breathing exercise though, with the AirPods in both ears, I always pass the test - Odd! It seems they continue to pass the test more often than not - just a quick breathing exercise makes them pass again.

My fourth replacement set of APPs just started failing the ear fit test after about two weeks -- and I've barely used them because I've been so frustrated by this issue I've made a pair of Amazon Echo Buds my daily driver. This is simply a hardware problem that Apple will have to address.

Four pair! I think I would have given up by the third and looked for something else.

These products have been a massive disappointment. The sound is terrific when they work as they're supposed to. But that's the catch. To have this issue – not to mention the degradation of ANC experienced as a result of the firmware – is not what's expected for a premium product. I'm in Canada and with AppleCare+, taxes, etc., they totalled $416. That's not acceptable. My OG AirPods never had an issue. You'd expect better from these guys, especially after they've had years to learn from the original AirPods.

By the way, that tool looks handy, but to spend an extra $30-$50 just to clean out the vents so these things work as they're supposed to is adding insult to injury.

So I ended up returning mine after I saw the local Walmart had a few pair in stock so I just did a trade basically. So far the second pair is holding up....but it's been just a couple days. I don't plan on babying them or anything. I'm hoping the first pair issues were just a fluke.

ok.. this is totally bizarre. your method works. but why? for a few minutes the sound, the fit..everything is awesome. but then it slowly gets muffled again until I repeat the exercise. is this a health thing? strange.

Yeah I don't know why but it's the oddest thing. Today was the first time in ages that my AirPods passed the fit test the very first time I put them in my ears.

What's this black dot remove device you mention? Can you be more specific?

You guys are really buying that? lol. Just get some alcohol wipes. Breaks down the earwax and wipes away.

I do have an issue with having my AirPods Pro falling out at times. I need to look for a solution.

No it was just for illustration in regard of answering the question about the kind of device mentioned earlier.

I’ve returned my APP, glad I made that call. Clogged vents and reduced ANC is too much trouble for a Premium Pro device imo.

I have had the AirPods Pro since day one. I am on my 3rd or 4th set. My experience is similar to many others, the fit test works fine for a few days and then stops. I have tried new tips and sizes and the experience is the same. Works for a while and then not at all. The ANC and sound quality is still acceptable but not what I believe it should be. An Apple genius told me that if the AirPods Pros worked once that is acceptable for them regardless if they fail over time.
Is there a consensus as to what causes this failure? Is it something that we have to live with until the next iteration?
Thanks for your thoughts.

If I were Apple, I would simply remove the tip fit test from the software. It’s not a helpful test when small, medium, and large tips all pass — and it’s maddening when it starts to fail after a week or so. It’s not clear to me that the perceived sound (bass) changes, ANC degradation, and footfall thump changes that people have associated with fit test fails are real or psychosomatic (for lack of a better word). These changes might as easily be related to the firmware issues that have gotten some publicity. Or both problems (firmware And fit test) might be different manifestations of the same product flaw. (And the moon landing could have been filmed in Nevada.) As mentioned above, I’ve had a succession of APPs that each, after a week or so, began to fail the fit test. I’m tired of trekking over to the Genius Bar to replace them, only to see the replacement pair start to fail in a matter of days. Apple dropped a ball here — but without the fit test few would recognize it. They should address the issue and then remove the test. My 2 cents.

I'll be the first to admit that I have no quantitative data on my experience, or that generally being an audio freak often leads to some unorthodox conclusions, but when my pair started to 'act up' as per this thread, the sound quality went from noticeably better than my 1st gen AirPods to noticeably worse.

In fact, I could easily tell if the fit test was going to pass or not without looking at the screen. The sound quality was that different for me. The fit test was just simply verification that something was wrong with the way the APPs interacted with my ears, whether because of a clogged vent, degraded ear tips, whatever.

And all these failures happened within a week of launch, so well before this suspect firmware arrived.

Don’t blow/suck on the AirPods grills. It may damage the internals...

Mine stopped passing fit test a long time ago. Then transparency mode seemed to sound more muffled when I was speaking to someone. I tried the sucking trick. Eventually the left AirPod started cracking loudly if I coughed or spoke loudly. Tried sucking again, and then the left AirPod broke and made a constant static and popping sound (like noise from a radio being tuned).

I don’t think they are designed to handle high pressure through the grills. Seems to damage the internal mics if it’s forceful enough.

Apple Store replaced mine today and they sound good again, like my first set did when brand new. No more muffled sound, fit test passes again (using old ear tips), etc.

It’s not surprising that there are some issues with these. There are a crazy amount of systems jammed into these, and each system introduces a potential failure point. You have a speaker, three or four microphones (and possibly a mechanical valve of some sort by the speaker if Apples patent is accurate to the production models), two proximity sensors, force sensor, and accelerometer in each AirPod. That’s insane. And if there are poor yields on any of those components, there will be issues...

I had the same problem with the seal test. Only showing a seal on the left ear. I got a ear/nose trimmer for Christmas that I hadn’t used yet so I cut it out of the package and ran it it in both ears. Now I don’t get a seal in either ear, doh!
