Currently if someone wants to talk to me i just reach up and hit pause.

With the Airpods, someone walks up to talk to me:
I double tap one side, wait a second for Siri to wake up.
Speak the command.
Wait for Siri to respond and pause the music/audiobook etc.
THEN I can talk to the person without the distraction.

According to the reviews when you pull one of the AirPods out of your ear it pauses the music automatically.

My biggest issue with them is they look to be about the same shape as the earpods which fall out of ears fairly easily. This isn't an issue when you a cord because it's obviously tethered to your phone. If one of these falls out in crowded train or sidewalk you're screwed. At least the bragi dash and the samsung icon's look large enough that you can find them easier if they fall out. These seem tiny to a fault.

Fair point. The fit is going to be critical. They better be a tighter fit or they're going to be flying everywhere.

I suppose it won't be long before Apple introduces some kind of basic paracord "AirPod Lanyard" accessory to keep them on your neck.

This is my only real complaint about the AirPods. While I wouldn't call EarPods crap (I think they're pretty good for being included with your phone and as a $30 replacement) it just isn't worth a >5x price tag just for wireless.
Same here.
They DO sound good, and when they are in the ear... they do work good.

According to the reviews when you pull one of the AirPods out of your ear it pauses the music automatically.
And there is the problem, the music/audiobook would constantly be pausing for me cause they tend to fall out.
Also I only use 1 ear at work most of the time cause it's technically illegal (OSHA, and State laws) to use both while i'm working.

EDIT: Just got to the airpod point in the keynote, Phil made it sound like you can use just one. Will wait for reviews.

a nice feature i'll admit, but apples earbuds don't fit me so this "feature" would make them 100% worthless. (the falling out part)
Will not be buying them, but I do see them as pretty cool. Just not for me. Ver 2 with some sort of rubber retention, and I'll reconsider. That box is pretty damn nice.. great way to keep them charged and safe from breakage. I've broken 1 bluetooth headset because something fell on them.

I expect them to sound just like EarPods, which is fine. But I too am annoyed that they don't have volume control on them. When my EarPod buttons were broken, I had to pull out my phone to change the volume and it was such a convenience when I finally got the headphones replaced and got my buttons back. I'll wait for the second gen AirPods and in the meantime get the Bragi Headphone and hope the connection is stable.

My guess is a firmware update in the future will get us some more functionality out of these. Until then, well they are still exactly what I've been waiting for so I'm buying day 1.

Yeah, this really puts me off. They should have some form of volume control - or, indeed, any control beyond Siri. I'm currently living with a set of broken EarPods with broken volume controls and it's a bloody annoyance to mess around with the watch or try to get my iPhone out (with Apple's silicon battery case) to change the volume.

The watch really is a disaster when it comes to changing volume. The Digital Crown should adjust its functionality so that when you are listening to audio, you can just spin it up and down to change the volume. As it is, we've just got the totally useless Time Machine feature...

I agree with the OP about onboard volume controls. Bluetooth earbuds without them are a none starter for me. Frankly I'm a little spoiled by the EarPods bonus ability to fast forward, rewind and skip. I like the EarPods as I feel they are good enough but I use silicone "hooks" to help them stay put. These specifically:https://www.amazon.com/Earhoox-EarP...e=UTF8&qid=1473396041&sr=8-1&keywords=earhoox.
If these don't work on the AirPods, I anticipate something like this will be available for the them soon. I'll wait to see how they perform before I render judgement, but I'm intrigued.

I'm with you on most of what you wrote, but I think you missed one of the feature of the airpods. When you take either bud out of your ear, it automatically pauses. You'd have to use your phone, an Apple Watch, or Siri to change tracks or volume.

The Air Buds already make you look like you've got a Q-tip sticking out of your ear so why not just extend that gross "shaft" and put the control buttons from the standard earpods on it.

I have the Dash from Bragi and you can turn the volume up with swipes, pause it with a tap, and change tracks with double taps. You can even answer or reject calls by nodding or shaking your head.

When I wrote that i had not seen the keynote. Curious though if you can use just 1 of them though..
but apple really should have made it easier to change track/volume though. Maybe in an update with taps etc.

Still not going to buy one with how badly they fit in my ears though, they would fall out with pretty much any movement. The EarPods refuse to stay in my ears, and these look to be the same size just wireless.

I will probably grab me a set of those skins someone posted above though, that could make the EarPods usable for me.

I'm wondering that too. The only time i use headphones is for podcasts or car driving and I only use one side. So it would be nice to be able to buy a 2nd case and share with the wife.

that's a huge problem for me too.

I now use wireless BT Plantronics BackBeat GO2 headphones - they have a cord between the buds but it's easy to adjust its length so they kind of disappear on me below my hair. I even have two pairs. always have them charged and ready. they usually last 3-4 hours. when I run with them I am not worrying about potential drop out as the cord on my neck will keep them on me. I use volume and pause buttons on the cord on my neck all the time.

I love the sleek look and the size of these airpods but without button/gesture controls they will be troublesome even with my apple watch which I wear all the time...

Apparently, these fit a bit better, so there is hope. I am in the same boat as you as the wired ones don't fit 1 of my ears too well..

From Apple's own website.

He's saying that there are NO controls on the Airpods themselves... you *MUST* either use Siri or physically use the iPhone/Watch. (Or iPod/Mac or whatever else they connect to)

My iPhone is out of reach 99% of the time, and my Watch takes too long to swipe/switch to the correct app and then pause/skip/change volume/whatever.

Two things turn me off with the Airpods.
1. zero physical buttons, or even taps (outside getting Siri to wake up) for Volume, tracks, pause etc.
2. they are Apple's crap ear buds, wireless.

Every time i'm forced to use them, i keep them as a spare if my bluetooth dies or I forget it, they WILL NOT STAY IN MY EARS. they fit so loose and the slightest movement makes them fall out. Why apple didn't add at least a little rubber of some sort to help them grab the skin better is beyond me, they wanted them to be super smooth and look cool! which makes them slippery.

Now the charging case, I like. But my bluetooth lasts 8-10 hours of music now.. so that would also a downgrade.
And besides i paid $50 for my bluetooth, 3x more for less charge time and higher chance of losing them?... not worth it.
If you took the time to watch the one minute movie you would note that tapping the ear pod twice answers calls. Until we see them released or Apple discusses any other tapping commands we won't know. Perhaps single and triple taps do something, beside envoy int Siri. Either way, I use "Hey Siri" a lot now with my iPhone so I am way used to talking to my digital assistant.

As for other people overhearing me talk to Siri, I don't give a rodents behind. As they carry on conversations on their blue tooth devices all the time. As I do with my phone speaker and wired EarPods.

Just an FYI, but according to people who have used AirPods you can tap once to pause, twice for Siri.

yeah....I know right......who would have thought talking to phone would be only way to communicate. What's matter with you Mr. Alexander Graham Bell, so quaint talking to a phone through EarPods microphone. As Bell taps in morse code on phone, "Watson, come hear I need you" And history records first tapatalk. :D

Especially if it's reliable on Siri...Siri isn't exactly 99% perfect and what if you have poor or no internet connection.
Me: "Turn up the volume"
Siri: "Sorry, couldn't quite get that"
Me: "Turn UP the volume"
Siri: "Searching the web for 'Turnips and Valium".
:(

I venture to bet that even you don't get what people say to you 100% correct all of the time. And you are a live human. Asking a piece of silicon to do it is rather remarkable.

Every time I ask "hey Siri, set timer" it understands me. No internet connection required.

Let's wait and see how they work before crapping on everything. If it doesn't work we will have plenty of time to be negative. Why start before even trying it.
