That makes me nervous. I would have thought to make them touch capable along the "stem" and a simple set of gestures to control. Try it on your earpods, it seems natural.

I agree. Slides up for volume up and slide down for volumn down. Very natural.

But unfortunately it is in a design that once again seems to be designed by someone who spends most of their day in a large prestige animal-free white room, and not someone who actually would be running to catch a bus.

Fortunately for me.

This would fit perfectly for me because I do have a day that is completely working online on the computer and not having to run to catch a bus.

Fast forward to the future.

This describes a majority of the working population.

My biggest concern is potentially loosing one. I know someone that needs hearing aids. They flushed one down toilet, and later lost one and stepped on it. Now they have a cord attached to them so if one falls out it hangs from other alerting them. Cord has a clip to clothing.

Alternatively, consider using a one day glue application.

There are some considerations.

However, you will be able to keep your AirPods.

Never though about getting it stolen, snatched off. Good point to consider. Although even wired someone can grab and run. Head phones would be tempting target.
Possible, but unlikely.

They are useless without the charger.

Their value decreases to about $10 to $20.

Hardly worth the effort vs stealing phones.

With care, they should last.

I've never lost a BT earpiece.

Now, I wish I had as motivation to get the Airpods.

I didn't read this thread sorry, but volume buttons on phone works to adjust volume on airports I assume?

if so thats fine by me,

ill have jailbreak soon, and configure short hold up to change track and short hold down to go back a track, works beautifully like my iWalkman, bike riding, etc.

This was almost a deal breaker for me. In the end I thought about it, & for my personal use, I'll have 3 volume levels, at most, for my needs; Low Noise environment (where I need ambient sounds around me, say for cycling, running along streets etc), Normal environment (like at gym or quiet work surroundings) & Noisy environment (when around loud equipment at work etc).

So, all I'd need to remember are 3 volume levels for Siri.

After using these things for a few days, telling Siri to "Set volume 40%/75%/90%" seem to be all I need to handle every situation I'm in.

It's turned out to be not as big a deal as I made it out to be.

The only awkward situation I can think of is needing to adjust the volume on crowded public transport, but since I rarely use public transport, I won't need to worry about that, but even then, I'd have the phone in my pocket, or in my hand anyway, so I'd bypass Siri..

That's what I did too. Add in my Apple Watch for most other times and it's no big deal.

Before freaking out people could have maybe thought that Apple had worked this out over years of R&D and thought the trade-offs were reasonable.

My other pair of Bluetooth earbuds technically have volume controls on them: but I never use them because they are hard to use without looking at them and typically cause the buds to fall out of my ears. I had actually never really thought about the fact that I never used them until I got my AirPods and was thinking about it... it's never been a big deal.

Similarly: my old Bluetooth earbuds don't have any track skipping capability... it's never bothered me and I never thought about it until now.

The AirPods are awesome for what they DO do... these small things shouldn't keep anyone from buying them. I absolutely love mine!

So, oddly after Apple said wireless is the future (but then included wired lightning headphones), I looked at these AirPods for my iPhone.

there are no actual controls on the headphones? If I want to change the song or even turn up the volume, I have to say "turn up the volume"??? Using Siri in public is awkward already, let alone saying "Turn it up" at the gym. Of course, I can reach into my pocket and use my iPhone too control but then there is no convenience.

Thoughts?
Not the least bit of a concern for me. Siri can finely control the volume, even using percentages if you choose, or it can accept casual phrases.

Most bluetooth headphones that do have physical controls for volume are awful. They are usually impossible to distinguish which button is which, and the very action of pressing them is a move towards dislodging them. I've had them all, hated them all, and not missing them for a second on AirPods.

I ordered two airpods (still waiting for shipment )and only found out about this design flaw of having to use Siri to adjust volume. So now you need to double tap to turn Siri on and then give the actual command? Really terrible UX design. Apple is really trying to push Siri down people's throats. As much as I want to like the airpods I'm seriously considering returning them.

I was you 2 months ago.

See my post above.

Adapting isn't so bad once you know how to control Siri (obedience training ;))

Use your phone to adjust volume.

Might as well buy the wired earpods - they seem to be user friendlier than the airpods

I'll definitely give them a shot - I'm just not very excited about the prospect

The volume controls on the Apple TV Remote control the volume on the AirPods.

The Apple TV Remote is not practical, since you can't use it in the dark, you can't tell by feel whether it is right-side up, and you can't locate the touchpad by feel without using it, so I programmed another remote and use that. My Apple TV Remote is in a wooden box near the TV. I rarely have to change the volume, so it's practical to it for that purpose.
