I had a couple of days to take some time to get a good impression. here are some updates:

--ANC--

I went into the city (SF, bay area) to pick up an item. I thought it was a good time to try the ANC in a real use case instead of at home. There was construction across the street, sounds of the road and some crazy homeless dude shouting at thin air or a bird or both. Wind was also strong and it was a chilly day.

Result: It passed. The sound was dramatically reduced and it did do a better job than the airpods pro but the airpods pro did well on it's own. The construction on the higher frequency sounds can be heard but it was significantly recessed. There were works blowing leafs and that was also reduced. When i take the headphones off, i can hear that there were much louder than I expected. Homeless dude also trying to talk to me and followed me for a block. I didn't anything until i heard a faint "hey buddy, i'm talking to you".

I do notice that the ANC changes slightly when rotate my head, maybe i had a seal open on the bottom of the cups but in that busy street as a rotated my head, the ANC would fluctuate and adjust, it's more noticeably if i did it fast (turning my head and i think it's because the mics were changing their position which causes changes in level recordings).

Since it was chilly, these acted like muffins and kept my ears warm but when the sun came out, i started to get a bit hot with them on and i had to take them off for a second. I was also wearing a mask and my face in general was hot.

Overall - ANC passed, they were great and when i used transparency mode on, i didn't have to take my headphones off when i was speaking with the store.

I did have one problem today where the ANC was not working or only worked on one ear. I had to reset the pairing to fix the issue. It was rather strange.

-----Audio sound------
I have been using it compared to the Focal Elex + THXAAA AMP + SCHITT MODI setup. I will say that, i still prefer the sound from wired setup better than the Focal. while the Apple airpods provide a nice - non-fatiguing sound with better bass. The clarity difference between the two heaphones was night and day. The airy-ness of my open headphones just provided better breath to the instruments and better resolution in the sound using the same sound source (one is BT, while the other is wired) is very significant. And while I did enjoy the airpro max - I kept going back to my wired setup as my audio choice.

This primarily because of preference. While i like bass, i don't like over powering bass. I like bass that is impactful and not extras, like a precise punch instead of wack. Bass on the airpods when needed are there where I do notice it because i'm not use to it, but i love my mids and highs more, so this just someone take away some from the Mids. When you have vocal specific focused songs, i think it does a good job and the sound signature is wider than other ANC BT headphones i have tried.

Spatial audio has been the biggest and welcome surprise to the airpods brand. I just found out about it, maybe a week ago and these create a sound signature in movies which support it that not only I enjoy, but greatly prefer. I tried watch a movie with it off and it feels meh without it. the spatial audio fills my head in a way no other headphone - including the expensive set has done. For movies that support this feature, this is something that is worth an extra 50 to 100 bucks for my money. I really hope they support it on the apple tv soon.

--CASE--
And the "case", i would agree with some people on the internet - It's NOT a case. It's a cover. And for a cover, it doesn't bother. As a case, it's worthless. But i actually don't like cases because 1) i don't use them for headphones 2) it makes it harder for me to shove it my backpack. This just covers what i want covered and calls it a day. I'm ok with that.

If you’re looking for a more specific sound in the AirPods max try using headphone accommodations. Gives you some control on what specific sounds you prefer to listen to in your music.

These are totally worth the money. I truly didn’t think that they would be any better than AirPods Pro. I WAS wrong!

OMG these things are amazing. I watched Man of Steel and Iron Man yesterday and The Mandalorian today. It’s so hard to describe what it’s like but I’ll try.

It’s like wearing a 1st Gen HomePod on each ear. The sound quality is crisp, clear with NO and ZERO distortion.

The sonic booms and F-22 scenes were like I sitting right next to the jet engines. I could actually feel the vibration and air flow of the AirPods Max drivers during the scenes.

No spoilers here but the ending of this week’s Mandalorian while wearing AirPods Max was mind blowing.

These are worth every penny!

They are very cold to the touch which is a very nice feel.

They are also much smaller in size. I thought they’d be larger from online pictures and YouTube videos. Magic Mouse 2 for size comparison.

The earcups do have an orientation, there's a hole in each for an optical sensor. That could possibly be it, that they think they're on your head at all times.
Didn’t seem to help, still draining a ton

With the earcups on the right way around, do a reset of the headphones. You've probably confused and upset them by turning them upside-down :)
Yup done that, put them the right way around and reset. It’s super upsetting because they sound incredible and I genuinely do not mind the price....

Got mine yesterday and I‘m mostly satisfied but have two complaints. First the obvious one...

1. The case. I don’t know what they were thinking on this one. I feel like you’d have to be a real shill to defend them on it.
2. No power button. Just seems like an unnecessary inconvenience. Especially if you tie it to having to use that case to preserve power.

With that said, are these problems fixable? Could they (or a third party) release a better case than preserves power? I doubt Apple will do it, but I am hopeful there will be decent third party options in the future.

As for the power button, could they maybe add that function down the line with a software update? Something as simple as holding the crown or NC for 5 seconds turns them off??

I just picked mine up from the Apple Store.

Played Andrea Bocelli on them and my Bose QC35's. The QC35's are still damn good, but there is a clear difference and the AirPods Max's are so much better. They feel comfortable on my head and I don't feel the weight of them.... Well until I went to compare them with the QC35's and I could tell how much lighter the QC35's were. But the mesh top really aides in how they feel on my head. Barely tell something was on top of my skull. Happy with the purchase so far. :)

I ended up returning mine. I don’t know, maybe my head is just to big, but it didn’t feel comfortable at all. I really tried to like them, because I just love the sound, the functions, the Digital Crown, the look and yes - even the case (in a love-hate way).... ?

Picked them up today (Space Gray). First impressions:

- Really like the build, shape, aesthetics.
- Can feel the weight - mostly use APP these days and Bose QC 25 for travel - but not uncomfortable after 1 hr.
- They are not really that loud - respectively depends a lot on the source: video content especially, not that loud.
- Initial reaction on ANC is very positive, but I need a noisy setting to test.
- First call quality was good. I will put them through a few MS Teams meetings on Monday to truly test.
- Switching between devices so far is not "seamless", it hangs a bit like the APP especially between Mac (11.1) and iOS devices.

Bottomline so far: they are very solid with good sound, they are not a revelation, a "must have". I have not the latest Sony or Bose ANC headphones to compare. They are definitely better than my trusted QC 25. However, I will still use the latter for travel given the pathetic "case" of the APMs.

I am still on the fence about whether to order these to compliment my AirPod Pro’s or not because individuals opinion seems so mixed. People either seem to love them or hate them

They will be a great compliment. I own all 3 AirPods and they all have different uses. The AirPods 2 are used solely with my Apple TV. They are extremely comfortable for hours of watching tv and movies. The Pros are the portable powerhouse. They live in my bag that I take everywhere. I use them at work, the gym, and when I’m moving around a lot. The Max are my home listening headphones. Once I get a proper case I’ll probably start taking them out more. Because of their size they won’t be the most convenient choice, but I can plan ahead when I know I will be able to use them. You can’t go wrong with more then one set of AirPods. Like me, you will find a specific use for each pair.

At this point im leaning towards returning them and keeping the Sony MX4s. I do like the build quality etc but there are too many little quirks I don't like.

1). Ive had to reset them twice due to the transparency only working in 1 ear. (there is a thread others are seeing this.)
2). Im getting occasional BT dropouts which I don't get with other AirPods and the Sonys.
3). The are a bit heavy so maybe not good for walking outdoors etc
4). No audio cable included. The one apple has is a joke its so thin and exp. Also when your battery dies your done. Ive tried the Sonys with my DJ gear and they work great. The Sonys also have the airplane adapters etc.
5). No real case. The case is perfect that comes with the MX4s
6). At first I thought the MAXs sound better but I was able to set the EQs on the Sony app for what I like
7). Although I don't plan on damaging my hearing, the Sonys go louder if needed.

I do like the spatial audio but I listen to music mainly. I always have my AirPods pros with me so if I need that feature I can use them. I may hold on to them a little longer to see if there are any fixes for 1 and 2 above as they are the biggest issue for me.

I'm a Sony XM4 owner and although I initially preferred the sound from the XM4s, I wanted to give the APM a fair crack over the weekend.
I'm glad I did.

Not sure whether they've worn/burned in or I've got used to their sound but they sound sublime to me now.
I've not had any problems with connection or transparency or anything else and find them very comfortable. My decision to keep was purely on the sound but the ease of connection and the amazingly clear transparency mode makes these just amazing.

The wife is getting the XM4s to upgrade from her Xm2s so don't feel bad on buying them not that long ago at launch.

I've seen 3 websites quote Apple's Big Sur 11.1 release notes: "Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking for a theater-like listening experience"

But I don't see those choices in 11.1 nor can I hear any difference when playing content from TV.app. And Apple's Spatial Audio support article still says nothing about macOS.

What's the deal? Has anyone seen that switch in 11.1?

Edit: That bullet point is gone from the Mac App Store version of Big Sur. It's probably been there by mistake initially and the news sites (including MacRumors) quoted it. Still only iOS.

Picked mine up Friday listened some which watching The Mandolorian on iPhone a spatial audio made it sound outstanding! Music seems pretty good just now tried the Headphone Accommodations and that makes a big difference in the sound with the iPhone equalizer in off and listening to HD audio on Quobuz (I still can’t find the HD stuff through my iPhone with Amazon Hd). Still not wowed me like the first gen Beats that came out around 2009, a buddy had bought a pair for his kid and I tried those and the bass blew me away.

Ok have a question if I turn off Bluetooth and use the apple lightning to 3.5 mm dongle and 3.5 cable to lightning should headphones not work regardless? My Studio beats 3 do with my iPhone, but I use the same dongle with the lightning to 3.5mm cable in the AirPods Max and they don’t play through headphones it comes out the phone speaker. I turn BT on and sound comes through the APM, haven’t tried with Mac or iPad.
Someone else able to get them to work with Bluetooth off?

The little lightning audio adapter does not work with these as it's not bi directional. Already tried that with a standard 3.5 male to male cable. You need the crappy $35 cable to work. Its too short and super cheap feeling and even with that the headphones have to have power. This is another reason why I dont like these.

So in theory it would work on a iPod or phone with headphone jack? I tried to save $10 and bought the Anker lightning to 3.5mm cable at Best Buy and it’s what I was using in my test.
The Max won’t work with the Anker cable to my MacBook Pro, iPod Nano 6th gen or iPod Classic, would think that cable would work. Guess I will return that and get the Apple one and try it.

I’d wait for a 3rd party one. I have the Apple one. It works but should be priced at $5 not 35. It’s the cheapest feeling cable I’ve ever seen.

There must be something with that Apple cable as the Anker is mi-fi, lightning end in the Max and 3.5 in macbook pro and music won’t play.
