So this guy explains how to do the firmware update.... and confirms that the firmware update has fixed the battery drain issues, connection issues, switching issues and stuttering issues as he had those problems and since updating to 3C39, he says that everything seems fixed.

Mine hang at my desk out of the case. I simply plugged mine in and half an hour later they had updated to 3C39. They had been connected to my iPad and on 3C16 prior to plugging them in. They had disconnected from the iPad when they updated. Easy reconnect to verify the update had occurred.

For what it’s worth I’ve been tracking the battery drain in case vs no case over 5 days. These numbers were straight from charger and just letting them sit. Here are the results:

No Case

10:00 AM 100%

24 hours 96%

48 hours 86%

72 hours Ultra Low Power Mode

96 hours Ultra low power mode

5 days + 3.5 hours 74%

In case

10:15 AM 100%

24 hours 100%

48 hours 95%

72 hours 87%

96 hours 80%

5 days + 3.5 hours 71%

So after 5 days, 3.5 hours no case was a little better. Doesn’t seem to be any advantage to using the case from a battery conservation perspective. Also 30% battery gone in 5 days is a big fail Apple. Time to offer a power off option.
I’ve started the same testing after the firmware update. In 5.5 days we’ll know how the updated firmware compares to the previous version with the Max idle in the case.

I still can't get mine to update. And really my return on them hinges on this updates ability to fix the battery drain. With other brands of headphones I have I can force an update (and turn them off!).. I can't seem to get it to trigger. I've connected to my phone, charged them in and out of the case. Kept them at 100%, still nada.

I did this:
Connect iPhone to charger
Connect APM to iPhone via bluetooth
Put APM in the stupid case, but don't connect to charger.
Wait.

For me it was within 20 mins, not sure of exact time. Maybe leave it overnight like that?

Finally! That did the trick for me, I tried all other methods. Seems like the phone needs to be connected to a power source not the headphones. Thanks!

I will have to do this formal testing as well, but so far initial informal impressions are mixed. The headphones now properly drop all bluetooth connections when put in the case (instead of staying connected to the phone and my watch, which I think was my initial issue) but they're still losing 1% per hour in the case which is ridiculous compared to what Apple has said about how sleep mode should work. Unfortunately out of the case they never disconnect from my other devices at all (as I think they should after the 5m threshold Apple has documented), but still seem to lose about 1% per hour. There is definitely still some sleep state issue. Active usage has appropriate battery drain however. I didn't reset them after the update, so I'll probably try that and see how it goes.

At least I haven't lost 50% overnight yet, but it's too early to tell if that will or will not happen again.

Yep, after the firmware update and a reset, the problem is largely fixed. Battery life is still a little iffy when idle out of the case, but the case works every time now with minimal battery drain for days.

Although now my Mac and my iPhone fight over which one should be connected to the AirPods way more than the previous firmware ?

I do not believe I have excessive drain, but I am trying to get a handle on what is normal. I put mine on my desk (ear cups still up) with 25% when I went to bed at a little after 11 last night. At about 7:45 this morning their battery is at 20%. Is that normal for being out of the case? What would I expect in the case?

Not really an answer to your question but that is better than mine; mine still lose ~1%/hr outside of the case.

20 hour battery on a 550 dollar pair of headphones is amazing? LOL

That is normal for the Max, and also for the regular AirPods, except with the regular ones the problem is masked by the fact that the charging case keeps topping them off. And yet we still have people defending this stupid design decision to not allow users to turn off the headphones and conserve battery life.

Yeah lol, 550 dollar headphones should have 100 hours battery life to be amazing. You should enjoy your amazing 100 hour battery life headphones and let them poor people enjoy their inferior headphones with only 20 hours battery life.

To be fair, Apple is pretty much at the bottom of the class when it comes to battery, by a lot. And the lack of a power button makes it worse. I am getting 2-3 days between charges vs a week with the others.

I lost 10% of battery when I was out on a trip and didn't use my Max for a week. That is acceptable to me. I lose a consistent 5% an hour when actually using them. I am happy without a power button. I own far too many electronic devices, there's too much mental clutter involved with so many devices, and the less I have to think about properly using them, the better. The Max let me forget about having to 'manage them'.

Given a choice between the Max with their 20 hours, handoff features, noise cancelling, transparency and ease of use without a power button.......................... compared with other headphones and their 40 hours, no handoff features, worse transparency, needing to carry an extra charging cable because they can't use my iPhone's lightning cable, and the need to micromanage battery with a power button,...... I'd pick the Max anytime.

All this said, I do wish Apple made the long press of the dial function as a power button or something. Not because I want a power button for myself. But because I would like to see all the complaining about the lack of a power button stop 👀. Let those who have the mental energy to micromanage their devices have that opportunity.

very well said.
And yeah they are 550 , and battery is not the only feature on the headphone. They have premium materials, not cheap plastic , they sound amazing with their adaptive EQ, and they are magical, connecting among my devices without having to manually switch , and not being worried about turning them off is amazing . I can totally feel free of not using them for more than a week and they are full of battery. I’m don’t even need to be checking anymore. And that for me is worth the money.
of course is subjective. Just saying that battery is not all you think when you buy a oremiuj headphone.
Anyways. In my perspective, they have an amazing battery now and provide the best experience of use I’ve seen.

Would be acceptable to me as well. Unfortunately I'm losing almost the entire charge of the APM over the course of two days where they're sitting idle for all but maybe 1½ or 2 hours max. This week I plugged them in to charge overnight Monday, started Tuesday at 100%, used them maybe two hours and left them sitting outside the case. Here it is, Wednesday midday and I get a little popup on my iPhone that they're down to 13%. That just can't be right, even outside the case.

I've reset them more times than I care to count, mostly to try to get them to connect to my Mac. My firmware version is 3E756, which I gather is the most current.

One thing which I guess could be a factor is that one of the Macs I use is a pretty old 2014 iMac, which probably has an older version of Bluetooth. Maybe the headphones have to do extra work to maintain a connection to the iMac?

All in all, I'm very happy with the APM -- but the battery situation is a bit of a nuisance. I know there are arguments against having a power switch, but it would would nip issues like this in the bud. I do hope that some future firmware update offers the option of a true power-off mode.

I am consistently getting 10% drain overnight, every night, even with new firmware 4E71, is anyone else experiencing this? Had my device sent to repair, and they said all is well. My QC 35ii last for months in the case? Any suggestions.
(I've done all the resets, multiple times, and it does not improve it.)

Was experiencing faster than expected battery drain until I went into Bluetooth settings for my APM and toggled off Find My network. That seems to be the culprit.
