I wonder if MacRumors or some other outlet could really investigate. Is this Watch measure as meaningful as its proponents say? What does Apple say to these results?
How can they test on the old firmware, which is - in my case - getting wiped/upgraded almost instantly after I pair with my phone?

With that said, maybe RTINGS.com can compare previous testing with the new firmware.

RTINGS testing is totally borked and people should stop relying on them for accurate numbers on ANC. They still think firmware degraded the ANC on the Bose QC35s even after Bose tested dozens of headphones on specialized equipment as well as forensic analysis of the firmware code and proved no change whatsoever.

The hardware they use for testing just isn't built for testing ANC. Their margin of error is too large and people are routinely holding up the discrepancies as evidence of deliberate changes.

True. They also don‘t use Apple Watches for testing. Maybe that’s why it’s not entirely accurate in the first place :D

I didn’t test with an Apple Watch. I used my urine. Yep. When I first bought these AirPods, with anc on I couldn’t hear myself peeing. Now I hear it very clearly after the software update. Very disappointing.

I don’t know if you’re being sincere or not, but the frequency of sounds which is not cancelled has changed.

So, then. Let's watch this video starting from the 2:56min mark, shall we?

this should be posted everywhere. I have no idea why people develop this stronger ANC "memory", like if at any point the APP was able to fully block anything other than low/mid end noises.. This never happened, never, zero chance, impossible. The truth is you're now obsessively focusing on noises that was always there. People talking? Water flowing? cars? These were never blocked, in fact, they should be more obvious because they make everything else quieter, the only chance you have to block these is with a perfect seal.

I've been a user of the site for years but never participated. But today i noticed a significant drop in noise reduction and thought I'd check the forum. And here it is, other people confirming it.

I'm very sensitive to external noise and can clearly hear the sound made by my upstairs neighboors now (they have a kid running around) which I could never hear until yesterday. Can also hear the sound of typing on my keyboard which i couldn't before. So yeah it's real. Now thinking of returning them and switching, if anybody has good recommendations?

Any chance apple fixes it in a future update? I remember checking the forums for the first generation pros back in the day and it seemed like once it was gone it never came back.

According to numerous people here, you're imagining it.
It's not a problem.
It's simply - something is wrong with you.
Sorry, Apple can't fix it. There is zero possibility that Apple would do anything to make ANC weaker. They have no reason to. They're perfect.

Hi guys. Today I just received my swap. They changed the stems with brand new ones with previous firmware installed.

I did a test with old firmware and the reduction was about 22db. Performe the same test after the update and the 22db were still there.

Don’t know what to think. For sure, a week ago, the ANC was blocking a lot more. Pose than today.

Lol 😂 I agree, the “decreased ANC crew” is definitely listening noises wrong 😂
No way Apple wrecked the amazing 2X ANC.

Numerous meaning the vast majority, yes.
Plus the majority on headfi, plus the just newly posted YouTube video here plus common sense.

All that vs. the mighty Apple watch and a minority of people.

Round 11 then!

Let me help you out here. This means that (even though this „test“ is still not empirically valid“) nothing (significant) has changed. You’re welcome.

When was the last time you cleaned them with blu-tack?

Even on the Gen 2's, where they relocated the grill, I discovered that they still get clogged very easily and degrade performance.

Have you cleaned your tips? Your ears? Any notable physical damage?

I'm not saying your hearing perception is poor, but people have been singing the same tune about almost every firmware update since Airpods came out, and for Sony and Bose headphones too. The fact is, ANC is a delicate system and many things can upset it. I don't understand this knee-jerk reaction to blame it on a deliberate change to firmware. The Bose tests on the QC35 were spurred by mass user complaints about firmware and they discovered it was damaged and aftermarket earcups. Oh, Apple's borked it on purpose for no discernible reason, time to shop for a totally new pair? It's nuts frankly. Especially when a majority of users report no change; it's so obviously not a universal change like firmware.

Not sure if you're trolling but i've been wearing different types of ear plugs for years so definitely not imagining it. My sensitivity to sound hasn't changed overnight.
I was one of the OG complainers on reduced ANC who now has 5 support cases open, a Senior Advisor getting a talking to over "you must purchase AC+ or I won't help you", an in-store guy who learned more about this than he previously knew, evidence of two whitewashed threads on Apple CommunityDiscussions, and a partridge in a pear tree.

ain't trolling

Just for reference. You always have that. It’s getting a bit ridiculous, honestly.

Please do it carefully, though. Don‘t use liquids and also don’t press anything into the mesh/holes. That usually does more harm than good. Use something like blue tack e.g.
