Ok, I'll turn my wifi back on and restart the process with the 'join' option...

Aha!

Now I've got 3 options (after selecting "join my current network")...

  1. I want Airport Express to wirelessly join my current network.
  2. I want to connect Airport Express to my network using Ethernet to extend my current network or create a 2nd network.
  3. I want to disable to the wireless network on the Airport Express and connect it to my computer or network using ethernet.

Option 2 for me?

The way you had it in your previous post, with AE making the network, you'd need the pc connected via Ethernet via the router to your AE to stream music.

Ignore this, reply to post on previous page

Well actually any of them should work. I would start with 1 and see if it works like that first.

I went with option 2 and all looked ok, but still no Airtunes icon on my wired desktop PC, but it is there on my wifi laptop.

*Bangs head repeatedly on desk*

Yeh option 2 sounds almost the same as how you had it originally. I thought (may not be true) that the extend range feature only works with other apple wifi prods and the occasional third party router. So it might not be possible with the one you have.

But option 1, or option 3 are good.

Starting with Option 1 now-chose "wireless join my network" and entered my router's wifi password-all good.

What's next!?

I've unpluggd the ethernet cable and can't communicate with it using the Airport Utility...

I thought using this method meant it would simply talk to my wifi network wirelessly...

That's it I think. Check the boxes allowing music streaming and such, and save it. When it restarts, it'll join your network like the iPhone and laptop, and streaming should work for anything connected to the router wired or wireless.

I'm starting again now (sorry my posts keep cossing yours) with "Join my existing network".

AE currently has an ethernet lead in-correct or not?

Sorry to confuse matters...

I'm starting again joining my existing wifi network (no ethernet cable in Airport).

Done a factory reset and rescan and it says it's found "an AE with 802.11n with default settings"

But when I click either continue or Manual setup, it asks me if I want to switch networks.

I selected yes and I've just enterred my home Wifi password...

Now I've selected "I want AE to wirelessly joing my current network" and on the next page selected my wifi name from the dropbox and entered the password, hit "update", then "continue" and it says "writing to the Apple wireless device" right now...

"Airport utility was unable to find your Airport wireless device after restarting. The settings have been successfully updated, but there was a problem rejoining the wireless network or finding the Apple wireless device"

The default factory setting is to broadcast an unsecured network, which you need to join in order to set it up. I.e. Switch networks from your existing one to the AE.

Is fine I think. Should now be on your existing network. Do you get the option to send music to it?

(you can't find the device because it's no longer broadcasting that default factory network)
