I just handed mines in today for the sticky mouse situation and Genius was at first a bit hesitant to get it replaced, but it seems as though it's gonna get done. After this, my mbp will be perfect :D

For those of you who managed to get their top case replaced, what else did they fix?

I got mine already replaced twice and I can already see after just one month that the paint is becoming darker and darker. Obviously replacing the top case is not the definitive solution, unless they replace it with a more resistant paint

On the previous page I listed this as what they did to mine:

- replaced battery (2nd time)
- SVC firmware update
- replaced finstack and heat sensor
- replaced heatpipe and heat sensor
- replaced inverter in the screen
- replaced top case around the keyboard area
- replaced keyboard
- replaced logic board

I agree that it's more to it, though. I think (and others agreed with me earlier in the thread) it has something to do with the amount of heat these things put out that's causing it.

Thanks for the heads up elbirth. I'm pretty sure as well that it's heat related . Last time the "genius" simply asked what I want to do and I mentionned to him that in addition of a new top case I'd like to have a new logic board to have a cooler machine but they simply change the top case.

I also have a 7200 RPM hard drive which is obviously hotter, than the 5400 RPM one. See http://www.intelmactemp.com/list. That could be it too as it's located at the bottom left corner.

Mine also has the 100GB 7200rpm drive, FWIW
Additionally, it's a 2GHz MBP with 2GB of RAM and it's on 24/7 with me using it a solid 10+ hours everyday (weekdays, at least... less on weekends).
While I realize that the MBP isn't meant to necessarily be a desktop replacement, it has enough power to be one.
Plus at the moment it's the only Mac I have, so I'm using it until I get a Mac Pro around January or so

Interesting, I've also participated in this thread here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=486930&start=15&tstart=0 and it looks like that most of people if not all of them who have this issue have a 7200rpm drive

Yeah the MBP is an awsome machine, if only the paint wasn't flaking :)

After exactly a week (7 days), I finally got my mbp back, and they did replace the top panel due to the faulty mouse trackpad button. But I also detected a couple of somewhat significant concerns.

The new trackpad button is much better, very crisp and clean.

I noticed a couple of obvious scratches in the indentation area where the Esc key is. But I'll live with that. But what really bothers me is that the right side of the Esc key is slanted upward enough that I can notice it. It was perhaps due to the tech trying to seperate the keyboard from the panel when they replaced it.

It's a bit annoying, but I guess I can live w/ it.

I actually had the opposite experience regarding keys. My eject key was slanted when I first got it (I've encountered a lot of people with a similar issue) but when I got mine back after the keyboard replacement, the new key sits flat.

One thing I'm noticing about mine, though, after having it back for a couple weeks... the fans are now noticably coming on. before I never heard them, but now I can hear them fire up when I'm not really doing a whole lot. And the bar across the top of the keyboard has been noticably hotter. I don't think it'd be far off to say it may be a little hotter there than it was before I sent it off the first time.

At this point, however, I'm not going to send it in unless it starts having problems. I'm going to get the extended warranty before my time runs out in getting it and hope for the best. Plus in a few months it'll no longer be my primary machine when I get a Mac Pro.

That's interesting. Since the mlb was replaced, the fan from the left does come on more often and just slightly louder than before, but I believe it helps keep the laptop MUCH cooler than it used to be. The bar on top of the F keys are suppose to be hot because that's where the heat pipes are. But I don't expect anyone to ever touch there anyways, so it shouldn't be a concern.

Update: Left side of "Enter" key is quite sticky and after pressing it, it makes a very loud "clack" sound. Quite easy to duplicate and I'm assuming this issue occured thru the replacing of the top panel since I didn't have this before, sigh  Going to another Apple store tomorrow and obviously having the keyboard replaced.

I hope I can convince them to order the part and have it replaced once it's in so I won't have to leave it there for another week. I don't even want to leave it there for more than a day.

It is happeing to mine as well and is a well documented problem.

These computers are made out of aluminum. There is no paint. That is clearly and obviously done in photoshop. My 4 year old 12" g4 after 4 years of very very extensive use does not have anything like that, nor my 1 year old 17" g4, and nor does my macbookpro. You know why? Because there is no paint on these cases!!! And if there were, it would not be white....you could have done a better job phtoshopping.....it looks more like something done with the pencil tool in ms paint!!

It is a heat related issue and there are plenty of document cases of this.

I finally found a Mac I can borrow while mine is out for repairs. My box should arrive on Monday. The Apple Care rep made note of the chipping paint, but my track pad also has an issue, so it's hard to say if they would have replaced it just because of the paint (since they're on the same part).

Did they repair your keyboard n8236?

Macbook Scratch

Regarding the macbook pro scratching under the command key. For those of you non-believers. This is a very REAL issue. I notice some of you thinking this is all made up or that those of us who have the issue have been careless and by accident put a nice scratch in our new machines. If you remember the TI's also had a major scratching issue. I think it would be helpful if those of us who are having the problem would post their pictures and experiences so that there will be more attention to this issue.

I just got back from the Apple store and they told me this was not covered under the warranty. Mainly because they feel that I somehow scratched it. Well the truth of the matter is that I used my index finger to clean out some dirt. I was then shocked to find after that a nice scratch. I rubbed a few more times to see what the deal was an more scratches. My guess regarding this is that it appears like there is a coating on there and it's basically flaking off. Is that so hard to believe?

Anyway, when I was at the Apple store I rubbed one of the macbooks with my fingernail in the same area and nothing happened. For those of you brave enough who don't believe put your fingernail in that area and see what happens. It appears some of these cases have a defect or the heat from one of these Lap burners are weaking the enamel in this area. Whatever it is we need to bring it to Apple's attention so that it is properly dealt with and so others are not thinking we have been careless with our computers. I have been super careful with this machine from the day I received it. So I know this is not a normal computer abuse matter. Lets get this cosmetic defect out there so Apple will take responsiblity fixing it. My guess is that if hasn't happen to your machine yet it may down the line until we know the cause.

Dude,

You've used the MBP "extensively for the last two months." That means there's going to be wear on it. If it flaked off in a location that you don't touch often (like in the middle of the lid), I'd call them up. But since it looks like it's where your thumb rests when you're typing, it seems a bit unreasonable. Would you expect the undercarriage of your car to be perfect after driving 10K miles?

The product isn't really aluminium; it's aluminium coated with a coat of paint. It'll eventually wear off. So will the plastic that the space bar is made out of.

Anyway, in your defense, your other problems are worthy of mentioning. So go ahead and return it. I just don't think the paint flaking was that big of a deal, unless it was in a place you never touch.

Being a victim of this issue once, I can say it's an issue, but not one that's widely spread. I'm not gonna lie, I did try to clean out that area a bit, scratched it a little w/ my nails and it progressively got worse from there. As for poor worksmanship, i would say yes.

But to play Devil's advocate a bit, it's also hard for them to acknowledge this since the slanted area is almost damn near impossible to touch under regular use not to mention scratching it. Pressing the bottom role of keys repeatedly, you will realize you just don't touch there. The Genius told me they weren't gonna replace it due to that very reason and there wasn't much I could do. :( Your chances of having it replaced is slim.

Finally got my MBP back from repair today after 3 weeks out. Sept 26th - Oct 16th.

The wait was insane, but at least everything has been fixed. New logic board, less of a whine from the processor, no more buzzing lcd, fixed display hinges, and a new top case.

You don't happen to wear a thumb ring do you? Or have metal finger nails?

lol
not sure about anyone else that has this problem, but I don't wear any jewelry (except a metal watch that I *always* take off when typing) and my fingernails stay very short- and unfortunately are not made of metal.

yeah this sucks.

rough photo from my phone.

i've had my 15'' MBP since march roughly. just noticed it today. i never touch it there, try and take really good care of it.

any luck from apple yet with this issue?
