What devices in the world do not use USB C now besides iPhone? iPad and Mac switched, PC has largely switched too. Surely people who through out their old charger that they could have used instead, could find a way to charge if they want cables and not a dedicated wireless option.

Because Apple has no intentions of using usb type C. They make so much money with the made for Apple cert and are planning to just skip that to go fully wireless. It basically was said between the fact no brick , usb type c to lightning cable and the mag safe like accessories.

Since I "upgrade" ever year, I have several of the 5w bricks + cables. From last year my GF and I have two USB-C bricks that we could use. But, I usually just slow charge using the 5w overnight since I don't need to fast charge. I'll do the same with the iPhone 12 mini that I plan to pick up. I am intrigued by the MagSafe so I'll probably pick up one of those chargers.

If I hand the Xs or X down to another family member, I include the brick and cable. If I sell it, the buyers asks for it.

That’s you. I don’t have family so who would I hand it down to? I have 3 usb type c bricks and more type a bricks. If you can afford a modern high end phone you can afford a brick. The people who literally don’t have a choice of charging their phone is probably in the minority.

That assumes I'm keeping the charger from iPhone 11. Many people who hand down the device or sell it, the adapter is part of the transfer.

Apparently a large portion of macrumors forum members buy iPhones every year and keep the old charging bricks in desk drawers.

So what you’re saying it “most” people only have one brick and one cable laying around ?

To clarify, I think the new cable is no big deal. People with no other USB C ports on their other chargers or Mac or whatever, will either use their old USB A charger or get themselves a nice MagSafe future-proof charger. I think Apple calculated perfectly fine that they can stop giving people bricks in 2020.

And yet not a word from anyone now that we know the new iPhones will ship with a USB-C Lightning cable that is incompatible with all previously included iPhone power adapters (except iPhone 11 Pro and Max).
? Cause you can use any charging brick & lightning cable.

I’m still using the same brick & lightning cable from the iPhone 6. If I were getting the 12, I’d still be using it.

I trade in iPhone every year but have not had to give up bricks yes. So I have 8 old 5W USB A bricks by my count just now, plus three USB C from iPad, iPhone 11 Pro Max, and MacBook Pro. I also have wireless chargers and other random devices with USB C... I just don't buy that Apple will regret their lack of bricks in the box.

Yeah but they are saving the planet lol. Should of seen the box and packet my apple watch charcoal sport loop came in yesterday, you could fit 4 iPhones boxes in the box and them some haha. And the big packet and paper the case was in. BS.

Apple is simply transitioning all of it’s lightning devices to use usb-c cables rather than usb-a. Theoretically if you owned a previous iPhone charger, you still have the usb-a to lighting cable that came with it, and can simply use that, leaving the usb-c version in the box.

The usb-c cable is good for wired connections to modern macs, and depending how long it takes for a wireless only charging iPhone, is probably the preferred lightning cable for future iPhones as well, as it can support has charging when equipped with a compatible charger.

At present (and in the future) I personally would not buy any usb-a to lightning cables, if my current cables break I would rather replace the charger and cable for usb-c for fast charging.

No. But why should people dip into their existing collection of power adapters and bricks?

If I have an iPhone 11 and two adapters - one for home and one for work, I now have to buy two new adapters for iPhone 12.

So you can’t charge your phone with the included brick and cable from your XS or X?
I looked and I realized I don’t have any USB C chargers. Everything I have has the regular USB end. When I bought my SE2020 it came with the brick with the regular end.
My wife’s FitBit has the regular end that goes into the brick. My Bluetooth speaker does, the list goes on.

Not defending Apple but it literarily just doesn't fit my use case at all. My Tesla has wireless charging (or USB C fallback) and I top off my phone every night with a wireless charger. So it won't be missed by me.

I only care that it comes with a cable because I can't remember the last time I plugged my phone into the wall. It's either connected to my MBP, my car, or is on a wireless charging pad. This no-charger-in-the-box drama will have zero impact on my life.

I already have a charger in the bedroom, the kitchen, my car and another in a travel kit. I don’t even take the charger out of the box when I get a new iPhone. They could’ve omitted the cable too and I still wouldn’t care.

We always end up replacing cables when they wear out near the lightning port. And we have a ton of different bricks from the MANY devices we’ve purchased over the years. So getting a cable without the brick is truly the best for our family.

We’ve decided to get a multi-device charger in our charging cabinet. Much easier to corral 3 phones, tablet, 3 Bluetooth headphones, battery backup, and dog collar in one location. And we already have extra cables at our offices and in the car for USB charging.

Why do you have to buy two? You just said you had two, what’s wrong with those that you need two more?

1. If I sell my device or hand it down, I include the power adapter and cable.

2. My work has a 5W USB-A adapter. It no longer works with the USB-C/Lightning cable included with iPhone 12.

To your #1, with the iPhone 12/Pro, why would theoretically include a power adapter when you sell it now that it is not included? Also, are you telling me that you have never bought alternative ways to charge your phone until now?

To your #2, you only have the lightning cables that are included with the iPhone and you literally travel everywhere with that one cable and sell that one cable with the device when you sell or hand it down? I know from previous experience with using ligthning cables since my iPhone 5, I've had cables in my cars until I switched to a Qi Mount/charger in my car. I've also had cables at both work and at home. I can plug my phone in by my couch if I need to, I have a Qi charger by the bed and also have a lightning cable there to charge my iPad.

So people really used those included chargers? I may have used those standard bricks once or twice in a cycle of ownership. Pre-COVID, I traveled so much for work that I needed multi-port, multi-type bricks. Then I bought a wireless charger just for travel. I have 4 bricks now plus a couple of USB-C wall outlets as well.

I guess if you hand down devices regularly, maybe, but this isn’t a point to be upset over for me.

I rarely ever plug mine in anymore since getting wireless charging. The cable and adapter are non-issues in my book.
That's fine if 1. you already have a wireless charger and 2. you don't mind waiting an eternity for your phone to charge.
I just can’t believe the complaining about it. You’re buying a 500-1000 phone. If you have a charger, cool. If not, buy one.
That is the dumbest defense for not including a charger. Whether I agree with it or not, saying because you already pay so much much for a device does not mean you should have to pay more just to get it to work out of the box. That's almost the equivalent of buying a car without a way of putting fuel in it.
