Since it's listed as an issue in the Beta release notes, it can be assumed that it (likely) will be.

It's also listed as being supported on the recent WWDC sessions. So it's safe to assume its coming.

Has anyone tested out lightning flash drives (such as Sandisk's iXpand) in the new files app?

I download Ubuntu every day, although not on the iPad.

Tom
Exactly, you wouldn't be downloading a distro of Ubuntu on your iPad. Application (Games) and OS updates or installs are still handled by Apple and the App Store (unless Jailbroken). Legal Bittorrent uses diminish after those two are ruled out.

Hi All, I’m so happy to see external storage support on the iPad, as well as mouse support. Quick question for someone - if you connect your iPad to an external USB-C hub, can you connect external storage and a mouse and connect to an external display all at the same time?

begs the question WHY do you download it every day ?

Uhm nightly builds. Don't work, so I mess around with computers. I was specific as to what I was doing, but apologies for not saying why. Downloading torrents on my iPad; I've got no need for it, but they are out there.

Tom

That’s a great start, many thanks. I’m hoping the USB-C port can do display out and external storage at the same time.

Many thanks!

If you read the comments on that, the guy was using a hub because its not a bluetooth mouse or keyboard. Also, I have seen other people say with USB-C they have had multiple storage devices plugged in at the same time, so it sounds like all should work together at least on the latest iPad Pros. Obviously the earlier ones with lightning will be more limited since they do not even support external displays well anymore (Have fun reading the later reviews for the Lightning Digital AV adapter on Apple).

That's great news, thanks very much for posting. Appreciate it :)

I saw someone ask this a few pages back but really did not get an answer... For all those who have the beta installed, can you confirm the limitations of local storage? For instance, can the OS create a downloads folder in local storage for safari downloads? Can you create new folders to local storage such as a documents folder, videos, pictures, etc?

Also, I assume there are no formatting options for external storage correct?

Yes it can. I have a Kingston powered Nucleum USB-C hub plugged into my 12.9 iPad Pro and have a monitor connected via an HDMI cable, a thumb drive, an SD card and an external SSD all connected at the same time with full access to everything, all while using a Bluetooth mouse.

My iPad Pro is able to read the USB Drive and I can see all the content on the USB Drive. But I seems cannot open it at all. Tap file doesn't do anything at all. Any ideas?

P.S. I think the first generation iPad Pro 9.7 is accessing the file to slowly. I think it maybe because it does not have USB 3 controller. However, it seems that iPad Pro 9.7 could not even open a 1MB PDF file and using preview takes very long time to load. Maybe it is just best to use the iPad Pro 2018.

I only loaded the iOS 13 on my iPad Pro 9.7. It is able to read the USB Flash drive. That seems to be it. Tap on file does do anything. It also failed to create folder and also failed to copy files to the USB flash drive.

When I actually copies files to the flash drive, it gives me a communication error. I suspect that iPad Pro 9.7 may not able to handle files operation.

The USB drive is formatted with ExFAT.

Is your iPad Pro connected with Smart Keyboard? It seems to me that when I connect USB mouse lightning to USB adaptor, Smart Keyboard will not function properly. It is either not registering keys or will randomly registering keys.

Thanks for the response! I guess I should clarify my questions a bit though...

By local storage I mean the ipad itself ("On this iPad" in the files app). I am curious if there are any limitations when editing the local iPad file system (can the user create/edit folders in the iPad internal storage) or are these features limited to just icloud, network drives, and external drives.

In terms of formatting options, I mean something similar to a format utility where you can erase and reformat the connected storage device. (not really expecting the ipad to have this but I think it is one detail that could be useful in the future)

Well, you can create folders on iPad's internal storage and you can copy, paste and move files between folders and even from external storage. However, the file.app is still not comparable with Finder on the Mac of Explorer on Windows.

There is no formatting options. You simply unable to format drive, you would still need a computer for that.

P.S. I have changed USB stick, this time, iPad actually able to access all the files and open files. So we kind have to try our luck on USB storage devices.

I plugged in a Nucleum USB-C hub with 2 flash drives, an SD card and a USB-C SSD drive attached to it. All drives showed up in the Files app and I was able to read and write from all of them! Can't wait until apps are built that can access the the drives!
I wonder how you’ve formatted those drives. Being able to read/write from/to Linux file system or NTFS is essential to make this thing more versatile.

For me the big question will be if you can store downloaded iTunes purchased movies on an external drive and play them from the drive on the iPad
If video has to be put inside Apple TV app, I don’t see it coming.

The drives are formatted using exFAT. I tried an NTFS drive and it was not recognized.

It is still very limited then. Other users need to install additional drivers to access either APFS, HFS+, Ext4 or NTFS. To be honest though, this is not an issue at all for all Apple users, and the user base that needs multiple file systems support is even smaller than, idk, new 2019 Mac Pro user base.

I’ve been iOS/Mac only since forever but iirc some (all?) android phones can present themselves as USB a flash drives for file management from a pc.

That begs the question - would they show up in the files app?

Would any iPad have enough power to support another phone as external storage?

I would have thought that phones capable of powering other phones (eg Huawei P30) were also capable of powering themselves in this situation. But you’re right that could be a factor.
